The treehouse was probably about twelve square feet, surface-area, so Susie found herself uncomfortably squished against the wall to make room for the boy. It had been a long time since anyone but herself had been in the little house. "Boys?" she asked skeptically, one eyebrow raised. "Please. This is so much more vital than boys, Jack-o." She reached into a hole in the wall and took out a box of candy hearts and a little battery-powered fan. "I get firsties," she muttered, aiming the fan at her face.
After a few minutes with her eyes serenely closed, the ran blowing her hair gently about, Susie sat up and primped herself briefly before beginning. "Alright, this is how the place works. The parents tell the kids what to do. Oddly enough, they do it. But it's so much more intense than that, Jack-o; I mean, did you see those kids out there in the pool? The only 'acceptable' places for people ages 12 to 19 to hang out during the day (other than school) is the community pool and their bedrooms studying. Yeah, even in summer. And so they cram themselves into the pool and just sit there because there's no space to move. They don't stay in their rooms, because there's an 8:30 curfew and lights-out. How screwy is that?
"Now, there are two perfectly good (and actually viable) reasons as to why everyone does what the adults say. Either there's something in the water (there isn't; I have a home chemistry kit I stole from the science museum), or something happened to scare everyone. Something I don't know about, which isn't much. That's why I chose you, Jack-o. You haven't been sucked in yet. It's the damndest thing, really, because I've tried roping in every newbie, but something gets to them before me, every time. You're lucky, kid. I just saved your life."

He looked astonished. So there was something weird going on here.
"So, you saed my life. From what exactly? And who the heck are you anyway? this is too much."
He put his head in his hands and sighed

Mercilessly, Susie reached for the boy's ear and pinched him roughly, pulling his head forcibly up from his hands. "Come on princess, don't go fainting on me! I need you to be strong if we're gonna fight this battle!" She tried to stand up to her full height, but the tree house was too small and she had to bend slightly at the one window. "And as for your previous question, I just saved you from that!" she cried, pointing out the window toward where the teenagers were standing, zombie-like, in the pool. She knelt down until her face was inches from his, eyes narrowed seriously. "My name is Susanne Quinnlyn Morrison - Susie to you - and I'm the best thing that's ever happened to you."

Jake smirked. or so she thinks he thought. He looked her in the eyes, with his most serious look. "Look, I ain't know what's goin on round here, but if we're goong to fight this thing - whatever it may be - it'd be best we didn't argue amonst ourselves, don't you think, Susie"
He sat back and pondered a while inside his head

One delicate eyebrow arched critically, and Susie slowly leaned back to her side of the treehouse. "The only way to avoid arguments is if you shut up and do everything I say, Jack-o," she said matter-of-factly. "Got it?"
Her watch beeped on her wrist and she stood up elegantly. "Time to go. Plan in action." When she was halfway out of the treehouse she arched her eyebrow at him again. "Come you must, young Jedi. Of the utmost importance, this phase is." Then she slid down the rope swing as deftly as a spider monkey and took off on the same path that had led them safely past the pool.

He figured it was best not to ask questions, so he followed her without a word
