he narrowed his eyes, his eyes perked to hear her.

And as he strained to hear Frost, there was a sudden popping sound seconds before a young filly tumbled out of the basket in a bundle of feathers and giggles. She rolled forward to stop right at his feet. Blinking wide, cobalt blue eyes up at him, she chirped, "Are you my daddy?"

Frost squeaked at the sudden explosion and, already on edge from the brisk Soquili's interrogation, lept into flight, racing away to leave him to deal with the foal on his own.

He sputtered mentally. Am I her what? Is that a her? What is.. oh god. it's a baby. His ears flicked back. A baby. A mewling crying squirming feed me talk to me BABY! What was he supposed to do with a BABY? A clingy possessive little brat. An under hoof tag-along duckling. A Baby? Really? Seriously? A baby. Him. With a baby. And her question, her first words. Asking if he was her daddy. Well of course he wasn't! He would know if he had a foal! Especially as that involved being able to stand the company of a filly, of anyone, really. No, he bloody well was not her father! No way no how! Anyway, he wasn't the parental type. He *hated* foals. No chance. No way. And why did she have wings? Did she think he was going to teach her to FLY? Was she loony? Was she part loon? They had feathers... Loons, that was. Sang like crazy. Annoying little birds. Loon. That's what she was. A loon. Ugh she'd need a name, his little loon, wouldn't he? Great. Just great. Well he couldn't just call her Loon, tempting as that was. Maybe something close to it? UGH. He was thinking like he was going to actually keep her! Well, that wasn't going to happen. His ears flattened a little bit more. And he certainly wasn't thinking that maybe she was the smallest bit cute. No. He wasn't. Not in the least. She was a part loon! Well, part loon gets a name that's part loon. Same beginning and end, two vowels in the middle. "No, Lian, I am not your father," he growled. And he would not be. He would not become attached. He would not. Children were a lot of work. A lot. And he had few friends. And this wouldn't be a friend. It would be a crying whining bundle of get me give me.

She titled her head a bit which caused her to stumble the slightest smidge. "You're not? Then are you my mommy? Is Lian my name? That's pretty! I like that!"

He stared at her, and again the mental sputtering began. DID HE LOOK FEMALE?! She was CLEARLY out of her mind. CLEARLY! Him a brainless filly? Really. "Look, Lian, I am a male. Males are NOT mothers," he growled. "And I don't have feathers!" He growled, stomping his hoof for emphasis. How could she not know the difference between males and females? It was so simple, just look which way they were facing! Babies! Children! Really! Was she stupid? Did she think her stupidity was inherited from HIM?! Was that why she was on this whole parental kick? To insult him?

She'd get wobbly to her feet, take an experimental step. Then another. Then a skip. Beaming proudly at him, she chirped, "If you're not my daddy, and not my mommy, then I gotta go find my daddy and mommy."

Good. Go. Get lost! He thought. Good riddance to bad rubbish. A kid that trusting was nothing but trouble. His mind filled with images of all the messes she would drag him into, and he was glad to be quit of that. But then, against his will, those same scenes replayed in his head, only sans him. None of them ended well. He winced then grabbed her tail in his teeth. Which would stop her, but he realized, wouldn't let him explain anything. Which perhaps was a good thing, as he wasn't fully sure himself why he was doing this. Clearly that stuttering girl was her mother, but the scenes didn't work any better with with a coward in the picture. And a mother like that was clearly a disappointment. If it were possible to glare at one's self, he would have as he realized the path his mind was taking.

Feeling the tug on her tail, she'd stop and look back at him, curiously. There was a world of patience in those deep blue eyes, despite just how young she was.

He twitched. Great. He got her. Now... what was he to do with her?

She gave her tail an experimental flick.

He let go of her tail and grunted. "Stay"

She sat, obediently staying as she blinked owlishly at him.

The little impudent brat. How dare she do exactly what he told her to? She was mocking him, wasn't she? Little imp. Well, he'd show her. "You aren't going anywhere alone, young lady," he growled at her. He flicked an ear back in annoyance, who was this stallion? This wasn't him!

"Okay," she agreed, easily enough. "Then are you coming with me?"

He ground his teeth. The word NO sprang to mind rather violently. It was followed by a number of more creative ways to say no. He had no intention of tagging along after a foal. No way. And for what? So she could find the parents who abandoned her? So he could have to mop up her tears after? No way, no how, no chance, not happening. No. He narrowed his eyes at her. If she met her parents then she'd just be more upset, especially if the shy brat was actually her mother. No, the foal would just be hurt. He bet she cried like a loon too. No way he wanted that headache. "You don't need them," he grunted. Let her decide for herself what he meant, he was done. If he was going to watch over this brat, she was going where HE wanted to go. He was not a rag doll to be dragged along willy nilly!
