bandgeekus shorticus Whats a parade competition? I've never actually heard of them before..... idk if they're different anywhere else, but around here, its not a real parade or anything. you march down a street near whatever school is hosting it, and theres a zone. front rank lines up on the line or tape or whatever at the beginning of the zone (colorguard usually way in front of them) they get all set and stuff, and then they play the march and march through the zone. the judges are on a judges' stand about halfway (though i think it might be nearer to the start than the end) down the zone on the side of the street. (and the guard stops and does a thing in front of them and then goes down the sides of the band...usually...and does more stuff behind the band) sorry if my explanation is too long... xd my band actually doesn't do field shows at all. when i told my cousin-from-indiana-i've-only-met-once, he had no idea what i was talking about either lol

(sorry for posting twice...i forgot to respond to the original topic lol) we had this drill change and my friend had originally gone outside of me to get in front of me. our instructor changed it slightly, so then it would have made more sense for me to back straight up, but my friend still had to get in front of me, so we tried it with me moving in to give her room, then moving back out once she passed. then i thought it would make more sense if she just went on the inside of me and i backed straight up. we agreed that made way more sense, but then at our last spring competition, during our warm up pass, she went on the outside of me. i forgot to mention it to her before we went into the comp. then during the comp she tried to go outside, but i didn't move in, so she ended up running into my flag (making me drop) and she was late to her spot (which was even more obvious because we were hitting a pose...)

Heheheh, I have two stories about parades ^.^
Story #1: It was a really hot day out and, I can't remember his name so we'll call him Dave, drank almost a gallon of orange juice, no joke. Orange juice you see is acidic, so when doing physical activities, such as marching, it's really hard on your stomach. We where finishing our main song and where being judged, and right as we played our last hold, Dave projectile vomits. It didn't hit anyone, thank God. The funny thing though is that instead of breaking down or falling to the ground, he gets right back at attention like nothing ever happened. My band director and his assistant immediately took him out and put him in the truck that was pulling our city float.
Story #2: Our drum major, Taylor, was marching backwards just as a drum major should be during the majority of the parade, when all of a sudden a little kid runs in front of her to grab a piece of candy. Taylor ends up running into her, but instead of her falling over the little kid does, and since she was marching she couldn't help the little kid. It was funny, yet sad at the same time.

one time, we marched by the main crowd and my instrument worked fine. then when we walked by, it stopped working. i had to tighten the screw, and then get back in step, then find where they were in the song

nah, i've been a really good marcher since i started so i've always been the guide in my line so i'm very careful to not mess up. now that i'm the drum major, i'm really afraid of messing up my backwards marching and stuff while i conduct though. gonk

Im happy that my band has to memorize our music. That way the music sheets cant fly away. But during a parade I tripped over a reflector in the road. gonk I almost knocked out a trumpet. But I was able to catch back up.

My word. Our band marched in one of the parades at Disney World during band trip this year. we practiced the actual marching for one hour a couple days before we left for Orlando. Nobody gave the color guard the counts for any of the songs. And nobody, since we didn't know the counts, made a routine for the color guard. One of our graduated seniors said she would, but she didn't. Finally, half an hour before we marched out of the Disney World behind the scenes gates, somebody came up with work and tried to teach it to the rest of us. yes it was easy. But not easy to remember. the entire guard was off count, some of the freshmen were off-step, and barely could even remember the work we ere supposed to do. Worst performance ever. And all the band director's wives were all taking pictures and filming, and I was like "No! Stop! Do you want evidence of this?"

ClarinetGoddess I've only ever been in one parade. Of course, said parade is a parade my town does when rodeo time comes along. Few vehicles. "Floats" are driven by horses. More horses then anything. Not good when youa re i a marching band. I think its 2 miles. Well, we had a lot of people attmepting to avoid it(nearly impossible.) The only bad things that happened to me was my choes came untied and i had to break form to tie them(very embarassing), I kept getting out of stpe cause it was extremely hot, and when the band boosters went through the block to spray water into our mouths, it kept missing my mouth(didn't mind too muchxD) I hate being behind horses which we always are no matter how many times the Bd tells them and the horse people tell them the band shouldnt be behind the horses they do it anyway anyway to answer the question yes but we dont do competition parades but we do, do regular parades all the time memorial day we do 2 i think and we always end up behind the horses because then we got to march around band boosters and when they miss the poo we end up with dirty shoes T.T

We have a big town parade every year. I've been in six of them, plus one for a neighboring town that also goes into our school district. I march sousaphone, and my first year in the neighboring town's parade and at least one of ours, plus a couple times parade marching from the band room to the field on game day, my mouthpiece has fallen out of my sousa...
We have a showy style of parade marching where we swing our instruments... I've gotten off count a few times.
Us tubas have commands, like 1-2-3-4 is a spin, and 5-6-7-8 is a jump. I've missed those a few times.
And even still, I love parade marching.
