She wanted him to join back in? But... the rider part was already over. A light and encouraging nudge from behind managed to convince him to actually join back in, albeit a touch late.
"--dragons heed In thought and in favor, in word and in deed, For our world will be lost or our world will be saved From those dangers that are by the dragons braved."
He didn't exactly know how to harmonize, so he played it safe and continued along the melody line until completion. "Well sung again, Miss Akaya."
You both did well, Tereth remarked, clearly quite pleased with the music.
Yes, well, now it's yours and Eltimioth's turn to sing, he thought back wryly. The rider was caught off guard, however, when the large brown beast behind him actually lifted his head and bugled. "That was a joke!!!" he exclaimed, trying to get the brown to quite back down. He could have sworn he almost felt Tereth laughing inside of his head from the surprised reaction he had elicited.

Akaya took care of the harmonizing once she was convinced he'd properly joined in, and smiled wider once again at the compliment. "You did well too, rider S'ren."
Eltimioth thought Tereth's new game was great fun and joined in with the bugling, her trumpeting somewhat higher pitched and lighter in tone. Akaya's eyes went wide as she watched the dragons, a vague plotting forming in her mind. Dragons couldn't precisely sing, no, but she bet they could harmonize, and they always hummed at Hatchings...
The idea of being a "Weyrharper" was taking on brand new connotations to the girl, and she rather thought she'd have a lot of fun here at Trine.

Guys, seriously, it'd be best not to get the attention of the whole Weyr, S'ren thought to the two dragons. Really, how sad would that be if Brakiath had to actually add dragon singing to the ban list? "Alright, alright, knock it off, you two."
Tereth easily quieted back down, not the least bit concerned with the other disgruntled dragons and riders about. It was harmless and light fun, and it was not as if they had been bugling in alarm. You worry too much about what others think. Sometimes it is good just to let loose. Turning swirling green eyes toward Eltimioth, he added, Nice addition there. I believe the sounds blended well together.
"You know, if it wasn't impossible I would say that you had been born part Harper," S'ren said with a light shake of his head. Amber eyes turned back toward Akaya and he gave her an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that. I made a joke and they decided to take it seriously."

I believe they did too, Eltimioth said, absolutely unshaken by S'ren's pleas. Perhaps it was already because she'd been the subject of Brakiath's scoldings before, or perhaps it was just that she habitually paid S'ren little heed. Still, she quieted when Tereth did, eyes whirling merrily green.
Akaya shook her head. "Oh no! It was lovely!" She put a finger to her chin pensively while surveying Tereth and Eltimioth, clasping her elbow in her other hand in a very ponderous gesture. "You know, there really isn't any reason why dragons can't hum along to songs...I suppose during Passes it's something that's completely unnecessary, but in Intervals..."

S'ren blinked at the suggestion by the new Candidate. "Well, yes, I suppose they could," he agreed, never really having thought about it before. Certainly he had heard dragons make varying vocalizations, but he had never thought of them doing it to music before. "It is certainly an interesting thought."
It sounds rather fun to me, Tereth remarked. It would basically be like combing human and dragon music, right?

I think she wants to teach us to sing, the green said, peering down at Akaya in curiosity. It was a suggestion Eltimioth had never considered, but, like Tereth, it seemed intriguing to her as well.
"Mmm, dolphins sing too, you know," Akaya pointed out. "In their own manner, of course, but it's singing all the same. They have something like Harpers of their own, or so I remember, since their history is entirely oral." She'd always wanted to spend more time with the dolphins as well, but, unlike becoming a dragonrider, Dolphineering was very exclusive. The Weyr still had Harpers of its own, after all, but Dolphineers were too focused for such cross-crafting. A pity, that...

"Do they?" S'ren asked. He honestly didn't know all that much about dolphins and dolphineers, although he recalled being vaguely curious about them once many turns back. Dragons and land animals had been more his area of study. "That must sound rather interesting I am sure. Speaking of interest, Tereth and Eltimioth seem to be rather intrigued by your proposal."
It would be nice to hum along without disrupting the music, the brown remarked thoughtfully. Although individual vocal range is certainly no where near as wide as a human's. It'd take an assembly of various sizes and colors to achieve a nice variation.
Somehow S'ren wondered that Tereth hadn't thought over such a thing in the past. It amused him somewhat to listen to his dragon's commentary and planning.

"Are they?" Akaya seemed rather thrilled about the prospect. "I think it would be wonderful! It could be entertainment for the Hatching Feast to come you know, I bet it would be really something!"
I don't think we could get any of the bronzes or golds or silvers to join in, Eltimioth said doubtfully, but if we got a few of the others, that would be enough of a range...? She affixed S'ren with as impervious a look as the green dragon could manage, adding, You must translate more. If ever there was a time the green would wish to chatter freely with a Candidate...well, this was one of those times.

Oh? Are you saying that my services are required? S'ren replied dryly, acting for a moment as if he wasn't going to translate. "That would be quite the feat for sure, but do you think they would be able to actually remember their parts?" he asked with a faint smile. Dragons were notorious for their short-term memories after all. After the rider added, "Tereth suggests using dragons of different sizes to achieve a decent vocal range, although Eltimioth doesn't believe any of the larger colors might join in. Still, there might be enough interested to achieve what is needed." Tereth did add anything more at the moment, simply listening with a mixture of interest and amusement.

"Yes, that would be the primary difficulty, wouldn't it..." the Harper girl mused, drumming her fingers together as her brow furrowed. "Keeping it simple would be key, and perhaps finding some sort of memorization system better suited for dragon memory..." After all, they remembered wing patterns, so they were certainly capable of long term memorization--even if they did consistently drill quite regularly. Was it muscle memory as opposed to outright memory? It was a puzzle, that was for sure...
"If they would be willing to pass the word along to their wingmates, perhaps we'd find enough willing to participate to make it worth everyone's while," Akaya suggested. Speaking of wingmates--well, humans and dragons, perhaps if the rider memorized alongside the dragon, it would be easier for the dragon to remember as well? It was something to consider. "And I suppose we ought to ask someone in charge if it's all right to be taking up the dragons' time in such silly pursuits," she added, almost apologetically.

I'll be sure to ask some of the others when I next see them, Tereth agreed, more than willing to help with this project. It would certainly bring something new and different to the day.
S'ren had to chuckle at that. "Yes, it may be wise to ask permission for such a venture, but in the meantime it can't hurt to perhaps start thinking of music. Tereth says he'll ask some of the other dragons if they might be interested."

"Oh--I will! Thank you!" she said, clapping her hands together in excitement. As if becoming a Candidate wasn't enough--teaching dragons to sing! That was the sort of thing songs were written about, after all.
"Thank you for what?" E'lai asked as he rejoined the group. He'd heard the bugling earlier and decided not to ask; it was usually better that way. Didn't look as if anyone was maimed or dismembered either, so that was always a plus...
"A dragon choir, dragonrider E'lai!" Akaya said, with an infectious grin.
E'lai blinked, looked from one dragon to the other, and shrugged. He'd heard worse schemes out of Eltimioth, but this sounded more like Tereth's doing. "Well, good luck with that."

"Ah, welcome back, E'lai," S'ren greeted, smiling faintly at the other rider's approach. He could only imagine what was going through E'lai's mind after hearing the news. "I trust everything went well?"
Do you have anyone specific in mind? the brown asked Eltimioth. He was trying to think of whom he might approach on the matter.

Not in particular--but I will try and ask the others. I do not know if I will have any luck, the green said, sounding wistful. Her wing-fellows were altogether generally not inclined towards more fanciful pursuits, but perhaps she could do some persuading...
E'lai nodded in response to S'ren's inquiry. "Everything's all set for you, Akaya." The Harper girl glanced at the dragons, then gave a resolute little nod of her own.
"Off to the Candidate Barracks with me then, right?" she said rhetorically, with a small chuckle. "I will see you later then--dragonrider S'ren, brown Tereth, green Eltimioth!"

Tereth inclined his head in farewell to the Harper girl. "It was a pleasure meeting you," S'ren repeated with a smile, watching for a moment as E'lai led the girl toward the Candidate's barracks. Then, turning back to the brown he said, "Well, I suppose we ought to be on our way as well."
Indeed. Tereth angled a front leg to help his rider climb on more easily while turning a whirling green eye on Eltimioth. Thank you for calling us over. This was fun. We'll have to catch up on more Weyr news later.
"We'll see you guys around then," S'ren said to the green before Tereth took off from the ground. One thing was for certain, things were never dull around the Weyr.
