The percussionists in my school get all the love, actually >_>
No one really talks bad about any other section at all. Well, my friend plays trombone and always puts down the bassoon, but whatever. I'm the only bassoonist in the wind ensemble, so he's really just putting me down, not the section xD when we get some new kids in the bassoon section, he'll shut up.
Anyway... yeah. I play bari sax in marching band, and it's easy as hell, and everyone knows that. At least, in my school- we get crap parts. Whole notes the ENTIRE. PIECE. So we actually all admire our percussionists, in the bari section. We have some really talented percussionists, and they work a lot harder than I have to. At least in marching band.
As for in wind ensemble, our timpanist is amazing, so no one says anything 'bout her.
We do make fun of the triangle player a little though ;P
I kind of don't want to do percussion personally, though- since I play bassoon everyone's all "oh, you have to play glockenspiel or something in marching band, how can you play bari now?" and I do NOT want to play that instrument, sorry. I play piano too, so I'd think it's kind of similar, but it's really not my thing, the glock. I do admire our percussionists, I just... don't want to play the glockenspiel .___.

All the drummers in my band are beasts (and they know it lol). But they don't get put down at my school cause everyone thinks they're sexy...I will choose not to comment on that, but I love the drum rhythms. My favorite part of band camp is hearing the drummers warm up. 3nodding By the way I'm in colorguard...and half the colorguard is dating the drumline so I might be biased but oh well xd

Magician_Ki
i totally agree. if you want the other sections to respect your drumline and pit and what yall do, tell them to do the following:

Paradiddlediddle into a flamacue followed by a buzz roll link that to a 2 beat triplet rim shot into another paradiddlediddle.

sounds easy right? maybe, if your a drummer. oh yeah, give them a tempo of 160 bpm, that was the tempo of the drum feature from my senior year, and that rythem is just made up.
pirate

lol I made my friend -trumpet- play this because he thinks it sooooo easy being in drumline and he looked at me and he honestly thought I made up some of the words just to make him feel stupid. lol I can't blame him, "paradiddle", "flamacue", "buzz", "rim shot" sound pretty not real lol
Never the less, he never got it! Neither did my clarinet friend, or my flute friend lol

Ya. I hate it alot because at my school someone always has to say something about the percussionists. and at my school, our drumline is like a very big family and its like "If you say something about one of us, you just said something about all of us." cool

I played flute for 6 years.
And I am now in percussion.

I never really looked down on percussion (i was intimidated actually)
But I also didn't realize how much more difficult it was. (but of course anything is difficult after you pay flute, lol)

Anyway, Everyone knows how important a role percussion plays, and in my school, most everyone in my band knows that we work hard.
(and yea, we also started percussion camp almost 2 months before band camp.)

If anything, we get a lot of grief for talking while setting drill (which is lame cause if we laugh, we get crap but if the other sections are like yelling and stuff they dont get in trouble)
And they get on to us for taking too long.

Okay, I'm sorry that we're all caring drums that are about 50 pounds heavier than you can even lift.

You try running with all this weight pulling on your front, and THEN tell us if we're still taking too long.

lol

Percussion is not easy.
No I haven't played it, but our percussionists seem to have a difficult time with it.
I've played flute for 4 years, and people think that looks hard lol

Ah the other mebers of the band. So funny in their accusing unknowing ways. In my band the other sections have a problem with slowing down. So we pick up on the tempo to get them back to speed. And Drumline is not easy. It is not just hitting things. It calculation, muscle endurence, timing, commitment, lots of pressure to play correctly for the sake of the entire band, ect, ect.

And basically the same thing at my school except the for on guy who basically ruins it for the rest of us because he hits on everygirl he sees. And he's also the guy who is going to be doing a third year of Bass drum. LOLZ.

I hate it when people say percussion is so easy and go on about how it's what you play when you "don't want to make an effort". Being in a percussion only band of 19 or so people is hard, we have to me loud, clean, and sharp because we aren't a "full band". Yeah lots of percussion haters in my area. sad

I can say from experience in both the winds section and percussion section, that percussion is way harder. I played clarinet for a year and it was a breeze. Holding a dinky little thing in my hands while jazz running wasn't that bad. Try putting on a drum (any drum). From Bass 1 to a set of quads, it doesn't matter, it's hard. The percussionists definitely have more of a responsibility.

Something our band director would always point out: If they really wanted, wind players could fake through their entire show. No judge will watch their fingers and say "oh thats the wrong note." But if one snare plays forte and the other ten are playing piano, you can clearly see a problem.

Moral of the story: don't put down your percussion section.

The whole band (about 18 people) thinks that percussion is super easy and it's just hitting the drum at random intervals. I hand them the easiest piece of music we have, and somehow they manage to screw it up. We only have 3 people in the entire percussion section. Colin plays set, I've got bass (I've grown quite attached to it. I do love sometimes messing with the flutes by getting a note off. Only 1 out of our 8 flutists are actually bearable.), and Caroline does whatever she feels like doing. Sometimes i fake doing something important when we play just to make a point by watching the band fall apart without the percussion section. When the band redoes the piece, we join in.

I love Percussion and I'm the best percussionist in my band (Not boasting my BD said sweatdrop ) and I hate it when Percussion is always put down?
Everyone's like "Oh, you don't need to learn fingerings, Percussion's easy, all you have to do is hit stuff", but it's really actually hard, especially in my school, you have to do every single type: mallets, drums, and other random instruments. Percussion is one of those things where if you mess, the tempo screws up and the band fails. I wish other instruments would realize we were just as hard and maybe even harder.
Anyone agree?
dude i totally agree. im the best percusionist in my band too and all the trumpets give me is CRAP!!!! i hate it scream scream scream

In our band, the BD pretty much told us we have the easiest job. One day, the bass drummer (last chair) messed up a very important accent part on the piece. The band director put down his baton and said "You're percussion. All you do is rhythm. Your part is easy. You don't have to learn fingerings or breathe. You just hit it."
The look on our percussion director's face was priceless - and uncharacteristically - enraged. But we just moved, and our new band director played percussion all through his band years so I'm hoping we don't get blamed for everything now.

In my band, everyone looks down on pit, they always say that they don't do anything and that they are just lazy. It's annoying, since they actually learn their music quicker than anyone else in band.
