Somehow he had not expected the mare to run. She seemed more of the type to end up frozen in fear. That would have made everything easier. She proved his impressions wrong the second she moved from her spot leaving Hisoka scrabbling against the ground to turn. What had once seemed like it was going to be a short night on the job was now threatening to be eaten away.
A deep frown pulled at his lips as he regained his footing and darted after his pretend lover. The flames in his lanterns flickered dangerously as though they meant to leave him in the dark alone. He growled quietly at them but it changed nothing. Slowly they started to go out one after another until Hisoka's ghostly white form was plunged into shadow like the rest of the world.
He took in a deep breath as he was forced into stumbling blindly through the dark until his eyes properly adjusted. It was a bad situation. The voices shrieked louder in his head than they ever had before as Hisoka followed after nothing more than the sounds of a frightened female running through the forest growth. "Bari!" He called in what a certain cat had often called a last resort. "Bari, not run! Return here!" In no way did the white stallion think that it would work but the Fox had run out of ideas. It wasn't like he had back up waiting in the trees this time.

Hisoka's voice echoed behind her. It seemed like a cruel mockery to hear it. Her heart used to jump when he spoke her name. Now it just brought her fear to an even higher pinnacle. She thought of all those times, of the afternoons they spent together over that long summer. It had all seemed so beautiful. She had been ready to call her life neatly tied up into a pretty little bundle.
That naivety had cost her. Her reckless charge into the night cost her too.
Bari could barely see in the darkness so it was little surprise that she couldn't see the root that caught at her front hoof. She had time for half of a breathless whinny before she toppled over. She crashed into the ground with a resounding thud and skidded into some low-lying scrubs ahead of her. Bari lay dazed on the ground. She was too disoriented to get up immediately and her crash had made a lot of noise, which meant that Hisoka could catch up.

Even though his eyes were all but blind, still adjusting to the new shadowed world, his ears worked just as well as they ever had. The fearful noise accompanied by the snapping of foliage and the powerful sound of something heavy hitting the ground keyed Hisoka in on the mare's exact location. He turned slightly to the right and raced toward the sound. Killing more than once a night was not anything he particularly wanted to do but the fear of being discovered grabbed him. The fear of being forced into never ending dark held him and the ceaseless cries in his head drove him forward until his eyes found her.
She was lying on the ground with scrub bush clawing at her white body. He had thought she would escape. Her head start had given her an edge, though, not enough of one. He approached the mare slowly, his cold golden eyes bearing down on her. His lanterns let out no warmth, no light, no comfort, only the faint scent of a flame now dead.
"You...should not came..." His voice was painfully void of emotion. His heart had long sense steeled itself against this kind of cruelty to keep it's owner from suffering. This was not how he did things. This was brutal and messy. It was hard even for the child long ago turned killer. Still, closing his eyes he reared back kicking his forelegs out in the open air. He'd crush her neck, it would be fast enough, or at least that's what the white Fox was hoping as he began to drop.
