"I guess so," Rika agreed hesitantly about being in a small litter, it was probably especially true where she only had her mother around and they were in the low class but.. she wouldn't mind having more siblings, at least she didn't think she would mind. She did know Andy pretty well, though.
"Oh, um, I don't know if all of mom's stories are true," she said thoughtfully, thinking about the stories, "She's been away from the pride before so she had stories about out there, and her friends outside the pride and everything."
Ummm..
Unyezi's ears turned. It was a poor way to word whatever had happened, saying they'd been taken- that would not end well. It would reflect poorly on the guards and then there would be a hunt to retrieve them. They hadn't been officially initiated into their class yet but it was coming up, waiting only for the next full moon to arrive. They were old enough to choose to leave, that was different. He didn't dare ask for a clarification, though, someone would have done that already. Forced her to say they left. It was probably easier to say they were taken from her than that they left her.
"I'm so sorry," he said, "It's not easy watching them go, it never is, even when they just find a den of their own. But you can't hide in here forever, Ivie." He frowned, pausing there. He thought of Charon, he was going through this too, he needed his mother.

"Well, I suppose it doesn't matter if they're made up or not, so long as they're fun to listen to, right? My mother is from outside the pride but...she doesn't talk about it much. I don't think she liked it."
"Um..." He blinked, looking sheepish. "Do you mind if...maybe we could hang out sometime? I mean...like...when you're not busy and Mother isn't...well, when she's better." He wasn't very versed in being social and to have a friend would be...well it would be pretty good.
She gave a pained cry and shook her head. "Even so...if they hadn't...if they hadn't wanted to go...then they wouldn't...they wouldn't have." She buried her face into her paws. Everyone left her. Everyone. And she knew it would only be a matter of time before Charon left, too.
"Then...what should I do?" She replied, lifting her head and looking at him. "I don't know what to do..."

"Right," she agreed, she had never minded hearing stories that couldn't possibly be true, those were almost more fun. Well, sometimes. She frowned when he mentioned how his mother didn't talk about being outside the pride, but it was good she liked it here. Or had, maybe.
"Oh! Sure!" Rika answered, smiling. She wasn't expecting to just be asked but she was happy to hang out, she didn't really have any friends outside the family, "I'd like that."
Unyezi frowned, she was clearly in pain and maybe it was too soon to be trying to talk her out of it but there was Charon to think about.
"Ivie, I understand, I stepped down from the throne and made my daughter queen, she hasn't spoken to me since- neither have her brothers or sister, I've never even met Alcmene's children," he said, "They haven't left the pride but they left me, but what would have happened if I couldn't move on? What would have happened to Nerit? Or our cubs? You have Charon, he's still here for you, but he needs you too."
He sighed, still frowning.
"The full moon is tomorrow night," he said, "There will be a celebration for Charon, welcoming him into his class and getting him started as a hunter. A party that he wasn't supposed to have to go to alone, but now he is."
If Ivie couldn't handle going, he would be alone.

"That's great! I'd really like that." He hoped he'd be able to have friends and take care of his mother at the same time. She still needed him, but so long as he didn't go far, then that was okay, right? She'd only need to call and he could come straight back.
That'd work...right?
"I wonder if your grandpa is having any luck with my Mother, anyway. She seemed pretty down...but, she does like Unyezi a lot. Maybe he'll be better at comforting her than I would." He wasn't annoyed about this. In fact, he was thankful to the older male. It felt good to be able to offload some of the...burden (though he hated to call it a burden).
She continued to look at Unyezi, which at least was a positive sign - as she'd been refusing to make eye contact with anyone since the kids' leaving. Even still, despite the fact that she was clearly taking in what he was saying, she seemed to be unable to shake her self-pity.
"Nobody has ever needed me, Unyezi."
But she did feel bad for his situation with his children. She hadn't understood the situation with Unyezi, really. After all Ivie had never really been in love in the same way. How could she? Even still, to have children close by and not be able to talk to them. Perhaps that was worse than not seeing them at all.
"I'm sorry." She said as an afterthought, and she truly meant it.

"I can introduce you to Andy, too! He's ok, sometimes," she said brightly, knowing lots of friends was probably more fun than just one. And maybe they'd get along better, they were both boys after all. But she would try to be fun!
"Hmm!" she hummed, turning to look toward the den, "I bet he does, he's good at getting you to talk when you're upset." He really was!
"Your cubs needed you when they were small and they had you, I was there. Your job as a mother is to get them to when they don't need you anymore, where they can take care of themselves," he said, frowning a bit as he continued, "You and I both know when they don't need you anymore, they don't always want you anymore but that doesn't mean that you did a bad job or that nobody does. Charon stayed with you, he's worried about you. I'm still here talking to you, we're still friends."
He sighed.
"I'll go," he said, not giving her a chance to argue immediately, wanting her to really think about what he said and to show his confidence in what he said, "I hope I'll see you tomorrow night at Charon's party."

"I would like that very much." Charon smiled warmly, standing at the sound of paws as Unyezi moved to exit the den. "Looks like your grandpa is done." He added, blinking slowly. Then he shifted back to the front of the den and cast his new-found friend a look. "We can meet up later, um, okay?"
Ivie'lingwa had returned to her lifeless state of before. She did not respond to Unyezi and, as she listened to him pad away, she felt the tears well hotly in her eyes and thrust her paws over them in frustration. Why was life so horrible? Why was she always so cursed to ruin her life? Why was Charon burdened with her? Why was Unyezi - a good, good lion - being snubbed by his family?
It all seemed so very wrong.
