"If you impress at all you have a lot of responsibility, regardless of what you choose to take on." Salin blinked at the man as though he'd just said he was trying to teach his dragon to tap dance on command. "Especially with the way the passes have changed. The riders could be called on tomorrow to fight thread. They have to be ready at a moment's notice. The queens need to be agile and strong for the best flight, their riders need to know how to run a weyr in case the responsibility is thrust on them, and the crimsons likewise need to train, either for the best flight to fight or the best flight to clutch, and every other dragon and rider need to be ready to fight."
It may well have sounded a bit rehearsed, but that at least he meant with every fiber of his being. "If I hadn't been training as a candidate since I was twelve, I'd probably have considered learning a craft for cloth dying, but when I was offered the chance to impress, I took it. It's a busy life, different than I imagine growing up in a hold to be, where you learn a craft until you get searched."

He wondered if V'tur had been one of the lucky ones, impressing the first time their foot hit the sands. He didn't seem to realize how intensive and life encompassing the process of being a candidate could be if you'd been born to the weyrs. He didn't mean to be 'dismissive' of the idea of ever seeing the sights, but he considered his first duty to be learning in case he did impress, and only after he and his dragon had honed their training could he consider the leisure of flight for fun. His lack of desire to be a bronze rider or weyr leader meant no less responsibility, and if he didn't impress... well... there was so much else to do around the weyr he'd probably never see them anyway. It seemed unrealistic to expect to apprentice at another craft once he aged out, regardless of how interesting he might find it. At the very least, he'd be practically doddering before he could test for master at any other craft. He rose politely and offered the man a respectful deep nod. "I would very much like to meet Iweth. He's a fine dragon from what I've glimpsed. You were very lucky."

V'tur shook his head. This one was too literal for him and he was a serious man. The boy sounded like he was repeating something from either the Candidate or Weyrling Masters. "I didn't say there wasn't a lot of responsibility involved, Salin. You are responsible for a life that is but isn't your own. And it is true that each color has their own duties that they are charged with but that doesn't mean it always has to be about duty."

Pausing for a moment, V'tur's face took on a thoughtful look. "Not every person is made to be a leader nor is every dragon made to lead. Each rider, each dragon has their place in the wing and all together, the wings work in harmony. As for those who are in a craft or hold, their responsibilities are different but just as great. All of Pern is like one big body with everyone being different working parts. It is good you are learning a craft. Maybe you can show me next time."

It was good to imply that there would be a next time.

"Thank you, it was luck that I Impressed him. I was afraid I would age out as many times as I stood but like you, I had a back up plan just in case. Though it seems that Iweith's plan was greater than me. A pleasure to meet you, Salin."

"We do what we can with the time we have, right?" He smiled pleasantly enough and gave the man another bow, though he had the vague feeling they'd both had two entirely different conversations with the same words.
He also got the impression that the man had somehow taken him for a candidate who thought that there was no dragon but a strong, fast bronze, and he wasn't remotely sure how that had happened. Something he'd said? He'd have to think it over while he tended to his duties.

"I'll be back to my chores then. I hope your day is a good one." He backed away before moving to vanish as best he could, given his flashy hair scarf, into the workers of the kitchen.
