Vera looked down at her drink, biting her lip. She hadn't meant to destroy the obviously fragile self-control Khalla had been exhibiting, but. It had just slipped out. "I'm sorry," she said again, though what exactly she was apologizing for this time was unclear. It could have been anything, given Vera's usually low-level of generalized guilt. A hand reached out and stopped about halfway across the table, hesitant. The idea of taking the blonde's hand in order to comfort her had started the motion, but nerves and being unsure of how she'd take it were what stalled it.

With a mental shrug, Vera left it there. If Khalla wanted the comfort, it was there.

"Oh yes," she said softly with a slight shake of her head. "You think you've got everything under control and you're dealing with it, except suddenly you overhear something, or read about it, and it all comes rushing back in." Vera took a deep breath of her own at that point, her eyes looking a little distant. Whatever had triggered the same sort of reaction in her likely wasn't related the comas.

Khalla shook her head as Vera apologized but she couldn't summon up the words to tell her it wasn't her fault. Even if Khalla had managed to act unaffected thus far, something would have triggered it sooner or later and just because that something was Vera didn't make her upset with the other girl. There was no sense in being sour over the inevitable.

Her eyes did catch Vera's half reach for her. She would have left it at that, finding it awkward and herself not entirely sure how to respond, but then Vera seemed to grow a little distant and Khalla could only see that as a carefully hidden reflection of what she was feeling herself. So she reached out then, taking Vera's hand from across the table and squeezing her fingers lightly with her own.

"Everything has a way of working out," she seemed to have switched roles with Vera in the span of a few moments and instead of trying to find hope for herself, she was trying to give what little she had left to her.

Vera returned the squeeze, smiling gratefully. The role reversal vaguely amused her but she attempted to shake that off, along with her bout of unhappiness. Really, she needed to put all of that behind her. Well, most of it anyway. It was hard to forget everything when she dealt with the aftermath daily.

"Though usually not the way you'd think," she replied with a little laugh. But at least everything worked out, with people able to move forward. Eventually. Moving forward was the hardest part sometimes. And it wouldn't be easy to keep your life going when almost all of your friends had fallen victim to the comas.

Of course, it wouldn't be any easier for the people in comas to fit back in, as Vera could testify.

"That's very true. Sometimes things work themselves out in ways that you never expect." After all, the last year of her life had been one giant surprise after another. She felt like, more than anyone, she could probably relate to that feeling.

She was just about to draw her hands back from Vera's when she noticed the time on her watch. If she was going to get any visitations done today at the hospital then she'd have to get going. It might have been the source of her distress but it was also where her friends were and she felt as if she owed it to them to visit.

"Here," she pulled out a slip of paper from her purse and a pen, then scribbled her name and number on the back of it. It was probably some random receipt, but it served it's purpose better this way she was sure. "I need to get going, but call me if you want to talk, okay?" She'd somehow gone from falling to pieces to trying to help mend someone else. It seemed odd, in a way, unless you knew that Khalla was most comfortable when she was helping. It was as much a coping mechanism as anything else.

"Life's just full of surprises," Vera replied with a wry twist to her mouth. It certainly kept her on her toes! It was nice to talk to someone who seemed to relate; Janice just brushed everything off and wasn't particularly inclined to retrospection. At least where it concerned Vera, that is.

A bit lost in thought herself, Vera only noticed Khalla's hand pulling away when the extra warmth faded from her hand. "Mmm?" she said, looking at the paper. "Oh! Just a moment," she continued, pulling out a small notebook and writing down her own information in her quick but elegant script. "The same goes for you." A pause and Vera smiled again, looking at Khalla with genuine warmth back in her eyes. "Thank you."
