What I always do is start from an item I've been meaning to use, it's good if it's unique with cool colors or something, and build a matching avi around that. I'm working on one right now around these boots.

Tips that I use:
1. Find a couple of items that you adore and base your avi around them.
2.Don't be afraid to experiment.
3. Have fun with layers!
4. Always keep your wardrobe well stocked like irl you want options so sometimes its better to start off with many less expensive items then 1 or 2 really expensive items.
5. Last but not least like everyone else is saying stay true to your style.

I don't have much tips, but here are some ;
- try to be unique with your avatar! The style that most gaians seem to have that are HORRIBLE (in my opinion they are) are the 'ganster' avatars. They don't match AT ALL unless you are really good at matching ;]
- what are you comfortable with? Try to make an avatar that is YOUR taste!
- don't stress yourself by trying to use expensive items. Any avatar can look good with some layering, clutter etc.
- different colour combinations! Some really good avatars are the ones that have bright and eye-catching colours! Don't be boring with black and white, try adding some more COLOUR. But is black and white is your thing, I'm not stopping you ;o

I keep trying to do this, but like, SOMEHOW, no matter WHAT ITEM I START WITH, and no matter HOW HARD I TRY TO USE IT, it always manages to work it's way off of the final version of the avatar and then I have a 'dude wtf' moment after I click save and look at it for a few minutes and realize what I did D;
I have constant fail with that method.
Constant. Fail.
But, it usually turns out to my liking anyway.

I try to come up with a color scheme first then I move on to the feet because it's the hardest part to work with.... After that it's just instinct.

You can only get 2-3 colors on the feet. So if you have an avi that has 4-5 colors, it will be difficult to have it balanced.

I cheat on the feet. Shoes + Socks + Pants + Ankle items if applicable + Foot/background items + companion items that stack near the feet.... I have a lot of options I can throw down there in a pinch.
Which is, incidentally, why I'm on a bubbly lily pad right now xp

I'm only able to match about 3 colours at the feet.
Or sometimes 4.
I tend to use a long hand-held item that reaches the feet :3

Off topic : John Reese, you are terrible for using that font color. sweatdrop It does not agree with my color-blindness and I cant really read it.(had to highlight it to even see it) xd
