"That is an interesting dilemma you bring up, Mr. Boreas." After rubbing his eyes, he blinked and looked towards the castle's direction, finding it was still firmly present. He set the sunglasses back over the bridge of his nose and verbally began to work the puzzle aloud.

"The castle, I would suppose, is excellent shelter. However, just because a structure is present does not ensure that there is anything living there. It could be completely abandoned for all we know. At least with the pathway of footprints, one could assume that there should be some sort of survivor on the other end. I am probably no help, but I suspect we may want to at least stay true to our original intended pathway. Perhaps find out more information on the castle before foolishly making our path that way."

Of course, the "optimist" in him couldn't help adding mentally If we live long enough to make that decision.

There was a slight pause after the Senshi of Winter then asked some slightly less pressing questions. In comparison to navigating this strange desert, the questions were completely harmless.

"Well, I would like to consider this not a uniform... this is merely just my casual wear." He was still wearing that brown striped shirt and the slacks he had been wearing just before this strange red-skied desert. "So I could say that I got it from my closet, if you would accept such as an answer." He laughed slightly, since that last portion of his response was obviously meant in jest.

"I, also, know nothing of you, Mr. Boreas. In fact, I probably know less of you than you know of me. You can probably already guess my heritage just based off the manner I speak." It was rather difficult to hide his heritage with an English accent hanging off every spoken word he offered. This did bring the curious question to mind in regards to this senshi's stance on personal information.

Would he ramble about it carelessly like Miss Virgo, or would he withhold the information like Miss Vanadis?

"Footprints it is then! Off we go!"

A decision. A path. Concrete and settled. This brought Boreas a slight feeling of comfort, not that he really could relate to the word. After his fall, he hadn't really tried to bring himself past "exhausted", so operating in the red was slowly becoming the norm. Oddly, he would kill for water, but he didn't really feel run down. Not as he should anyway.

Chin up solider!

Optimism again. Bravery should come swiftly soon as well. Though this thought was cut short by Howl's remark and question.

"Ha, good point. I did have a slight idea of the life you come from, though I can't say I expected the wit. Cute, but surprising."

This guy was riding on his back after all. Though he did appreciate the spice since he needed something else to focus on besides the endless footprints. And where did that damn camel go?

Too many damn questions. Shake it off and focus on your friend, you know THE ONE ON YOUR BACK!

"Me? What would you like to know? I have something to do with winter? I like to be cold since I have a strange affinity for a fur covered outfit. Hmm... what else? Oh yeah, I make a great pack mule."

He was poking and teasing. Playful banter was the name of the game. After all, he couldn't go too deep yet. The whole senshi situation still had that new car smell to Boreas.

Mental note: Mr. Boreas was guarded about his personal information.

One brow lofted a bit as the senshi called his wit cute of all things. It was strangely misplaced in the conversation in his opinion. In fact, the only thing it managed to do was make Howl wary of his steed. Yet, he was not about to abandon this perch. In all honesty, it was distracting him from the miserable condition he was in. Solitude had a way of exaggerating the symptoms of one's suffering.

"I understand you are in a position to hide your identity. Miss Vanadis was in the exact same predicament, Mr. Boreas." There was a thoughtful pause as her pursed his dry lips. "General questions will probably satisfy my own curiousity. What sorts of things do you enjoy doing during your time away from the whole senshi thing? I personally enjoy fencing, writing, and gardening." It was only polite to offer his own interests first when asking something remotely personal.

In all honesty, Howl could have asked plenty of generic questions. Age, hobbies, or political views. However, there was one question he would be avoiding completely. Schools. If he asked, then the obvious action would be to turn the question back to the asker.

He wasn't going to risk such a thing.

The footprints turned southwest for a while -- if the sun was to be believed as a compass measure, of course.

The speck was closer. They could almost make out its shape.

Before too long, they found a place where the man's footprints disappeared, and the hoofmarks reappeared again in their stead. Surely a man couldn't actually have carried a camel?

The feeling that he first experienced when he arrived in the strange desert was creeping it's way up from deep within Boreas. He wanted to try and push it down, he couldn't bear the thought of going that ordeal again.

But it didn't subside, the feeling that something was going to claw it's way out of him shook him down to his core. Outwardly, he tensed up, his grasp on Howl's legs became firm, and he repositioned himself in order to stand a little straighter. It may have helped if he could understand what the feeling was and why it was curiously associated with that speck from before.

Footprints. Follow.

The glass wasn't half full anymore. His inner struggle with the reality of the odd footprints and his own foolish optimism was coming to a breaking point and it was beginning to show. He felt like he was waging an inner war while he tried to keep up the conversation with his companion. His tone and mannerisms became more formal, almost more mature that he would normally be in any situation.

"I really appreciate that Howl. To be honest, the whole senshi thing is kind of new to me. I haven't really learned how to walk the line between business and pleasure yet. Though I think hobbies is a fair topic. I enjoy swimming, or should I say I love it. The only thing that I really excel at. Which of the three hobbies you mentioned is your favorite? Do you spend more time or thought on one in particular---"

Boreas stopped mid-sentence and stared down at the tracks.

"They've changed again...."

His voice distant with a subtle hint of dismay. Though this quickly changed to a look of panic as he noticed that they weren't headed for any kind of shelter, but the ominous black speck he had hated from the start.

"Looks like things are about to get a lot more interesting.."

He pointed to the obviously closer speck and a cold shiver shot down his spine. Boreas didn't run away, but he wanted to at least try to avoid it.

Avoidance, not cowardice. There's a difference.

"I really hate this desert..."
PostPosted: Fri May 21, 2010 5:56 pm

There hadn't been time to reply to any of the comments that his companion offered. No, the lookout had noticed the speck was closer, easier to see, and possibly even almost recognizable. It wasn't, but perhaps given a bit more time, it would be obvious what it was. It was a bit of a concern to see this strange speck and not really know what it was. Perhaps it was the lack of knowing that made both Howl and Boreas more tense.

"I do not want to complain in all honesty, but I believe you are crushing my thigh, Mr. Boreas."

After hearing that the prints in the sand had changed, after seeing the speck in the distance become more distinguished, and even after an onslaught of questions, this was the first thing Howl offered to the conversation again. Perhaps it was his way to snap the Senshi out of whatever trance the sand and speck had upon his companion?

"I must concur that I have an extreme dislike for this desert as well." One thing that was starting to get on Howl's own nerves was the fact the sun really hadn't shifted in the sky at all. How long had they been there, wandering the sands aimlessly? And even after that, how long had they been chasing these footprints? Yet the sun still burned along the horizon, as if the day was about to turn into night, yet had not fully transitioned. Was his mind playing tricks on him? Had Howl and Boreas really only been out in this strange place for only mere minutes in comparison to the many hours they both seemed to have suffered?

"...I suspect the only thing I can say without a doubt is that this place is stranger than any other I have been."

There was a pause.

"To answer your question of earlier, I enjoy all three equally, though I suspect the most rewarding would be gardening. And, I must confess, I admire your love of swimming. I actually am unable to swim."

Or rather, completely scared of swimming was a more accurate description. It translated to the same thing in the end. One couldn't tell if the pink color on Howl's cheeks was from blushing in embarrassment, or if it might have just been a sign he had been under the desert sun far too long.

"Sorry"

The words slide off his tongue and he loosened his grip on the young man's legs. He still felt dazed by the sight of the impending speck that would soon be revealed to them. What could it be? Was it even really there? Was he even in a desert?

Trapped.

Boreas' eyes widened. He repeated the word over and over in his head. A mouse running a maze, a bird in a cage, an exotic beast forced to walk the high rope in a circus, each and everyone could represent the senshi of winter and his new found companion.

"I think wherever we are, we are trapped."

Optimism present, but absent. His tone was one of someone who had given up and died inside. Rather the tone of someone accepting the challenge, the gauntlet thrown down before.

"These footprints are the only thing that makes any kind of sense in this place. And it should be put on the record that even they don't make much sense."

Boreas was careful not to step directly in each hoof print, but to closely follow in the space between each hoof print. What else could he do? If he was trapped and forced to run this maze, was there really any chance of breaking the walls down and simply moving forward?

Always, always move forward.

The glass was filling up again, though void of any kind of tempting liquid, at least it was filling up.

"Swimming is great, it can be really relaxing and refreshing after a good workout. Once we get out of here, I'll show you how to swim."

Boreas smiled a big grin at the notion of a regular day at the pool. Nothing seemed further from reality at that very moment than an ordinary of swimming. Nothing.
PostPosted: Fri May 21, 2010 11:31 pm

Perhaps it was inappropriate, but in an effort to possibly lighten the mood, the teal-haired young man let out a laugh. Nothing cruel, nothing scornful, just a simple, gentle laugh. He laughed for maybe a minute, maybe for less time, he wasn't exactly keeping track, but then eventually offered an explanation.

"It is ironic that we have so much free space, yet we are 'trapped,' as you phrased it."

Howl's toes clenched up a bit, then wriggled a bit, as if his legs were getting stiff. How long had he been sitting there on Boreas' back? At the moment, he was regretting his decision to not wear a watch today. However, the last thing Howl normally would have wanted was a watch tan. Perhaps today should have been the day he made an exception. Though now there was the question of if it would have disappeared like the shoes.

He was in the middle of pondering such a mystery when the senshi mentioned something which caused him to shiver rather noticeably. It was blazing hot, heat intense enough to almost melt his skin off, and he shivered. If his mind was in a better place, he might have noted the irony in this as well.

"I suspect that would be a fruitless effort. I suffer from aquaphobia, Mr. Boreas. Many have tried, and none have succeeded. Also, it would be a rather big giveaway to your identity, if anything. I highly doubt you could teach me to swim from the sidelines while wearing that suit. Or, on the flip-side, I would know the moment someone offered to teach me how to swim that it was you."

Of course, now the only thought running through his mind was that dream he had been having lately with Amelia and the swimming pool. He shuddered again, fingers clenching into the fluff on the senshi's outfit.

A slight chuckles escaped the desert dry lips. Howl's comment pointed out a very ironic flaw he had not really thought about.

"You're right. I didn't really consider how big our cage is. Though to be honest, this place wouldn't be half as bad if that damn sun would just set. I mean haven't we been out here long enough for a full day to pass?"

The heat was taking its toll and Boreas needed a reprieve, something to restore the energy he had lost since he arrived. Sure, he was an athlete, but not a superhero.

"Mind if we rest for a second, maybe just walk along the tracks? I don't know how much longer I can keep this pace up. At this rate, you may be the only one to get out of here."

Humor. A defense mechanism to prove his exhaustion. The tone of his voice revealed his light hearted comment's true intent. Though it did point out a grim fate that wasn't too far from becoming reality.

Chin Up.

"I'll set you down here. Hope you don't mind walking for a few minutes, until I catch my breath that is."

He carefully lowered himself close to the ground and released his companion's legs from his grasp. The gears turning again.
PostPosted: Sat May 22, 2010 9:31 am

Howl only half heard the request. So in return, he only half-responded with a noise that could have resembled agreement. It probably was an agreement, since the lad's toes clenched up, as if preparing for the heat to burn along the soles of his feet again. The teal-haired boy seemed to hardly notice what was going on around him until he was set on the ground.

Howl did not yelp. No, he was far too dignified for such. No, he let out a very faint hiss from behind his teeth, as if he was trying to hold back the sound, but failed somewhere in his attempt. Perhaps if he was more in the humorous mood, he could have claimed he was imitating the sizzling sound his feet should have been making.

"I do not mind at all, Mr. Boreas. You have honestly already done more than enough. I am truly grateful." He offered a smile upon his horridly chapped and cracked lips, but it did not last very long. For some reason, that burning pain from the bottom of his feet had moved up onto the top of his feet. Perhaps his feet had gotten buried in the sand from the less than graceful landing?

Yet, something seemed off. The warmth moved up from his feet up his legs, creeping up his ankles to his shins. There was also the fact that Boreas was seeming rather tall at the moment, and for some reason, he seemed to continue to grow. Which was a silly notion. Sure, they were in the unexplained desert, chasing after strangely altering foot prints in the sand towards a sun that never really seemed to set, and he was calling his companion's seeming shift in height silly.

It was about this time that he decided to look down, as if trying to gather his bearings. He did not see toes beneath him.

"What in the blazes?!" Sand was up to his shins, swallowing his pants legs and still seeming to rise on him, creeping up towards his knees now. On instinct alone, he attempted to move his legs, yet found they were firmly stuck in the sand which was now trying to devour him in a sense. Logic would have stated that if the first time he attempted to move and failed, it wasn't about to work the second time, or any other time after that. Yet, logic had a funny way of abandoning a young man the moment panic seemed to rise up.

"Oh my god!" He again attempted to move his legs, which only seemed to cause him to sink rather quickly and suddenly to being covered knee deep in sand. "Mr. Boreas... oh my god... stay back..." Apparently this patch of sand was like quicksand.

Or was it?

THINK. THINK. THINK. THINK!

Pooh the bear would have been proud of Boreas' fervid attempts at formulating a plan to rescue his now sinking companion. Grasping at straws, Boreas couldn't wrap his mind around the situation. He had just stood in that very spot. That very spot was where he was just able to not only walk, but walk over with a whole other person on his back.

"Ah Hell, grab on! I can pull you out!"

His hand extended outward. He was on the ground, crouched as close as possible to his companion.

"This isn't enough!"

He then laid on his stomach and reached out both hands. He was trying (and failing) not to panic. His arms were shaking, the desert had already taken its toll on his body and mind. He was barely able to stand the heat of the sand that was beating down on his body. He wanted to scream, but instead he focused every last drop of energy into his arms.

"I can reach you! I just need you to grab on! You can do it! Don't worry, we can get out of this!"

Optimism, rearing its head again, who was to say whether is was a cold drink of water in this smoldering heat or the the poison that would be their undoing?
PostPosted: Sat May 22, 2010 1:33 pm

An arm flailed over towards the offered hand, and initially missed. Boreas had been reaching out, crouching close, yet not close enough. Just because Howl had missed didn't mean he couldn't keep attempting to throw his arm towards the senshi. He was steadily sinking further into the sand, moving from his knees up to his thighs.

It was only when the ash blonde practically sprawled his body against the sand, reaching out that Howl's efforts seemed to finally make a difference. The first time the panicked teen threw his arms at his companion after the shift in position, his fingers barely touched Boreas' glove. He was starting to feel the sand's heat creeping up his thighs and trying to make its way up to his hips.

With a strained grunt of "...just... a little further," Howl extended his hand as far as he could. His fingers were absolutely beautiful, even after the harsh conditions they had to endure in this crimson-skied desert, but now trembling, twitching in an effort to draw Boreas' hand closer. His mind was shouting a million questions at him, cursing the world and all of its rotten luck, yet the only thing he did was continued to reach his hand out.

"...just... a little... further..."

The sand was burning hot, and it felt like it was only getting hotter as sweat was pouring off of Boreas. He kept straining further as his hands barely touched Howl's.

"Almost. . . Just a little . . . More"

The dried lips were barely able to form the words as Boreas forced every bit of his strength into his now shaking arms. He couldn't handle the strain much longer, this was a fact.

If only I could anchor myself on something...

Their fingers barely interlocked, but it was only for a moment. Even with his gloves on, Boreas could barely hold the hand that was desperate for survival. He couldn't allow Howl to fall prey to this horrendous desert and all its cruelty. He couldn't.

A spark, a light shined within. The thought that had occurred since he first threw himself to the ground raced to the forefront of his mind. He had no other choice now. It was a do or die situation and Boreas didn't have any interest in walking alone.

Quickly, he dug his feet into the burning hot sand and extended his body out into the mouth of sand that was swallowing the teal haired boy.

Now he was close enough to wrap his arms around Howl's upper chest, but he felt his foot slipping and pulling. Time was crucial, and he didn't know how long he could hold them in place or how long he could hold on.

No optimism this time. No glass. Only foolish bravery. Small trickles of water formed in the corner of Boreas' eyes. He couldn't help but to feel overwhelmed. Exhaustion had pushed him to his limits before, now only desperation and a slight glimmer of hope fueled the solider of winter's efforts.
PostPosted: Sat May 22, 2010 2:59 pm

It stopped.

There was no explanation, no logical reasoning behind it, but it stopped. The sand no longer seemed hungry, ceasing its efforts a few seconds after Boreas had grabbed Howl.

Of course, the effeminate lad had yet to realize it. The moment he had been even remotely wrapped up in the senshi's arms, his eyes pinched shut behind the sunglasses. So much had just happened in such a short amount of time, and so many emotions had just rushed through Howl that is left him not only drained, but absolutely frightened. He had thought he had a grasp on reality, and now it had nearly attempted to snuff him out like a light.

Had he mentally been in the right place, he might have quickly noticed how that hot feeling from the sand has stopped rising. Unfortunately, this was not something he noticed. He had hardly even noticed that another man was holding onto him. In fact, the thin young man halfway buried in the sand hadn't even noticed he was trembling.

If by some odd chance that a stranger were to pass by the two young men, they would find them to either be the most over dramatic pair or the most comical.

The first reason being that there was one boy with his arms wrapped another who looked half buried in a pit of sand. Nothing was particularly interesting about the sand, just that for some reason, this particular kid had decided to bury himself there.

The second reason would be that the weirdo with the fur gloves was shaking as he was wrapped around his companion. Maybe exhaustion would be a good excuse, but in all honesty, there wasn't a good excuse for two teenage boys to be half buried in the hot sand in the middle of nowhere.

No good excuse...

The words resonated within Boreas as he remained in the odd embrace he had started. He certainly didn't mind being so close to Howl, but under the circumstances, he would have rather not been this close.

"Uhhh...."

Boreas' vocabulary was slowly becoming legendary. His arms still shook, but for a completely different reason. There he lay, on his stomach, with a bed of hot sand beneath. To make matters worse, he was now embracing Howl, who as it turned out wasn't sinking so much as stuck.

"Hmm..."

Eloquence revealed itself again as he loosened his embrace and sat upward on his knees. He tried not to chuckle as he peered down at the boy who was buried in the sand.

"So, do you want me to pull you out or are you good?"

Howl seemed like the type who wasn't going to easily forget this kind of awkward incident, so Boreas wanted to smooth it over for him as much as possible.

"I'm glad you are okay! Crazy desert huh? Well, back to the footprints!"

While still sitting on the ground, he turned to face the trail of hoof prints, hoping they were still present.

"Looks like the trail hasn't gone cold."

He turned to give his teal haired friend a soft smile.
