Short Melancholic I think I'm going to try this! I think I read somewhere that you can put lemon juice on your hair too and that will make it cleaner... but I also read that if you put lemon juice on your hair it will lighten your hair...any ideas? It only lightens your hair if you go out into the sun with your hair actually wet with lemon juice and sit around in the sun until it dries. And it doesn't bleach it, it is hardly noticeable apparently even after a few times. I use the baking soda water and Apple cider vinegar water thing, I have for months, it is great and cheap and bees don't like me as much as they did when I had girly shampoo scents (great because bees freak me out) I didn't have a transition period really (I started in the winter, summer is prob different from all the sweating). HOWEVER! It is hard to visit someone else and stay with them unless you want to somehow bring supplies and explain it to them. I am apparently going to a hair school tomorrow with my grandma to get a "shampoo and style", so I guess I will see what breaking the cycle does to me......

Gabrielle_AnimalLuver I was trying to look for some home made shampoos. I came across this NO POO theory. Where you just DONT use shampoo confused The logic is that your hair works in a negative feedback system. The more you strip it of oils, the more it produces. So instead you refrain from washing your hair. I don't really understand if I'm suppose to continue rinsing my hair or not. It's also been said that when you NEED to wash your hair, use dilute baking soda and if you need to condition use dilute vinegar, but basically a minimalist approach. I'm trying it. It's not as bad as I thought. I haven't washed my hair in 3 days and it doesn't feel greasy at all. 3 nights ago I washed with baking soda and conditioned with dilute vinegar. I thought the vinegar worked well as a conditioner and like I said, so far no icky effects. i tried that before, but then my mom made me shampoo so i bought almost organic shampoo (only ingredient in it thats not organic is some corn soap or something) And my mom thinks im balding cuz of that and getting grey hairs, but ive been gettin grey hairs for years, so imma blame it on her lol :3 (half joke)

Yanueh I use a mix of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap with baking soda. Works great. I do that too! I mix it it so it's about the consistency of toothpaste (works good on wet hair like that~). The soap I have right now is peppermint, so it's really refreshing @_@

Tea tree shampoo is the only type of shampoo that helps relieve the psoriasis on my scalp. It seems to be the only shampoo that works (I have tried many different shampoos). What brand do you use?

I did the no poo method for four months. My hair was in terrible shape afterwards. It was always greasy around the crown, and the ends were really dry. Always frizzy. Oh and the icing on the cake? Hairdressers have always commented on how great my hair is. Went to get my hair cut while I was doing no poo.. she asked what I did to ruin my hair. sweatdrop
I wash my hair every second day, if I'm not working sometimes that can go up to a week without washing. My hair is in amazing shape now, oh and I don't have to keep it in an updo to hide the greasy disaster. XD

Oh, I just found this topic and wanted to comment!
Recently, I started looking into ways to better take care of my naturally curly hair and I too found the "no poo" theory. From what I understand, you aren't suppose to shampoo your hair everyday because the sulfate detergents used in many shampoos strip the hair of the natural oils. These sulfate detergents are also found in dishwashing liquids and laundry detergent because they are so efficient at cutting through grease. Stripping these natural oils can make the hair look dull, dry, lifeless, and deprive it of moisture. So, it is better for your hair to either go shampoo free or switch to a sulfate free shampoo.
I personally couldn't give up shampoo entirely because I didn't feel that my hair was clean. So, I switched to a sulfate free shampoo and it has made a huge difference! It's not exactly what I am used to, but my hair feels lovely. However, if you are doing the "no poo" route and your concerned about the oil build up. You can use a lavender spray to cleanse and deodorize your hair and scalp. You can make it by mixing 2 quarts of water with 5 drops pure (not synthetic) lavender essential oil. Otherwise, the mentioned baking soda mixture works too. ^ ^

I, myself, use shampoo only about 2-3 times in a 2 week span. I have a buzz cut and keep a very short haircut so I don't find it very necessary to use shampoo anymore than that. My hair can get dry sometimes, I don't know if this is due to small amounts of shampoo, but because of this I use conditioner after every shampoo use.
