Yes, and she doesn't mess with them unless there's an incident and they hinder her incidentsolvingness. She just doesn't wander into the Youkai mountain for no reason other than beating people up.

Youkai "extermination" is not exactly "erradicating" Youkai, but merely putting them in their place when they do things that may threaten the stability of Gensokyo, or when they don't let her solve the incidents that she has to solve as a Shrine Maiden.

It's as simple as that.

You haven't played PoFV, have you?

Well, I don't know if she is, but if she is, then perhaps the same could be said of all soldiers of all religions.

Suuuuure. What happened in UFO, then? She charged towards the flying ship out of pure greediness and didn't hesitated to kill any youkai she found along her way.

Wrong. In fact, as Ran pointed out, PoFV provides a good insight on this: Eiki tells Reimu to keep hunting down youkai, but tells a youkai —Yuka— to keep hunting people. The gods expect to maintain the balance between human and youkai by forcing both parts to attack each other as much as possible.

Another good source supporting this is UFO: when Reimu hears how Byakuren plans to create a state of peace and harmony between humans and youkai, Reimu strongly disapproves of her intentions... and seals Byakuren away.

Reimu isn't canon in UFO! I refuse to accept her existence in that game. Why would you want to seal someone who was finally freed after 1000's of years and has only good intentions? Reimu you stupid, selfish ****. Marisa's story is the only story in UFO, at least the youkai are the ones picking fights with Marisa, the story kind of dimmed when the two magicians meet at the end, they don't really have a reason to fight. But they become friends anyways. sweatdrop oops, ranting.

^This. But it would still do her good to be more considerate.

Kill? Seriously? Kill?

There's no killing like that in Gensokyo, dude. The Danmaku duels are designed to prevent killing altogether. Reimu knows this, hence why she can go around beating people up.

And in the end, Byakuren & Co. are all alive and end up turning the Seirensen into a Buddhist temple.

That doesn't mean she's the nicest person ever, though. She's not nice to Youkai, out of a sense of duty.

It'd ruin her character, for sure.

Aye. Kill.

Spellcard duels are designed to prevent killing altogether. A danmaku attack does not imply that both parts are bound by the spellcard rules. Thus, even though the main characters do fight using the spellcard dueling rules and thus never really die, all the nameless fairies the human-controlled characters finds along the way die a painful, horrible and gory death.

I was under the impression that fairies were immortal by default within Gensokyo and pretty much just re-spawned with a new body when they got obliterated,
somewhat akin to the Mokou fight where she plays her death animation after every defeated spellcard but pops right back up, difference being lucky for us they
don't appear right back where they were, besides they've been getting blown away for over 10 games now I'm sure they're used to it. So they may "technically"
be getting killed but it's not like they stay that way. rolleyes

I just looked it up in the wiki. You are right. I wonder if the same thing happens to the other small enemies you find along the games, such as evil spirits or earth rabbits...

Not sure about the rabbits, but the evil spirits, when they die, they end up back in Hell, in which case, they would wind up back in the former Hell of Blazing Fires due to "economic issues".

They're described as manifestations of nature.

Unless you destroy the "thing" they embody, they can always be reborn.

It's both a blessing and a curse: Because they're part of nature, they're kind of immortal, but they're also bound in power to their nature. However, that means they're also not very bright, and can't grow up to a certain point without crossing the treshold between "Fairy" and "Youkai" proper.
