Tony was not really focusing on his shelving. Twice he noticed he had books upside down, and once he realized he was shelving in the wrong call numbers together. He had them in numerical order, and it would have been where they went if they had all been PN books, and not just P, which were down a different aisle.
He sighed. Why was he putting so much effort and worry into a game of hide and seek with a teenager?
Probably because he worked in a library and, though he loved his job and would never let himself admit it silently or out loud, things could get boring. It was an interesting way to break up the day, the week, hell, even the month. He was so used to routine, a strange day thrown in wasn't a bad thing.
He heard footsteps, and he hid between aisles, shoving the cart away from him so she would see it down a few aisles and assume he was with it. He then planned to scoot up an aisle further from her, then go hide somewhere else.
He was pretty sure that wasn't cheating.

Sydney was oblivious to all of Tony’s shelving mistakes, but had she known she would have knowingly grinned at him before taking note to play hide and seek in the library more often. It would actually be fun to be able to play games like this at the public library, since only God knows what would happen if she attempted the same thing at the school library. That librarian could be so stiff sometimes.
She spotted the book cart up ahead. Her eyes grew as she picked up her pace, frantically searching for the hidden adult. Tony had to be on this floor, right? He wouldn’t be determined enough to abandon the cart and head to another level, right? Right? Although Sydney uneasily convinced herself of this, she couldn’t help but wonder.
Her face twisted into an intense expression of concentration, she continued to skulk around the third floor of the library. “Where, oh where is Mr. Tonyyy?” she whispered in the softest voice she could muster, darting in and out of the rows even quicker than before.

Tony heard her calling for him and resisted the urge to reply. She wasn't actually looking for him because she needed help, after all: she was trying to catch him. It was a trap. He watched her from the other side of the aisle, peering at her between the books before scooting off and then trying to hide down another aisle.
What am I doing?
He found himself grinning, at least enjoying the game, though he really wouldn't be able to explain himself to anyone if they asked him. And he would be incredibly embarrassed too. He saw Carol with an arm full of returned periodicals she was going to go and find homes for in her section, presumably passing through this area on the way back from an in-house pick up.
Hiding behind some books, he hoped she didn't see him. She passed right by, and he grinned, thinking his hide and seek skills were surprisingly good.
Of course, while he had been working on hiding from Carol, he had forgotten about hiding from Sydney. And both had made him forget he actually had work to be doing. Ah well.

If only Sydney could see Tony now, slowly immersing himself into the strangely strategic game of hide-and-seek. She would have been as a mother hen, but unfortunately she would have to soldier on and find him first. Sydney was stalking around the second floor with her legs slightly bent now, as if being a smidge smaller would prove to be advantageous. Ignoring the slight muscle pain, she continued to slink through the aisles in quick, long strides.
Surprisingly, she managed to speedily trek through most of the floor while Tony was preoccupied about Carol. And by a stroke of fate she caught a brief flash of his gray-tipped hair. Startled by the revelation, Sydney stopped in mid-step. Was fate on her side for once? Curiously she silently crept over to the opposite side of the aisle, hoping to take the librarian by surprise.
With her excitement just about to burst out, she bit down on her bottom lip to prevent herself from excitedly yelling at the top of her lungs. Just as she found Tony in her direct line of vision, she couldn’t hold it in any longer and jumped forward, victoriously shouting, “TONYYYY!”

Tony had no idea she had cut him off at the pass, distracted as he was, and so intent on just escaping. He failed to remember to keep an eye out on the person he was avoiding, somehow, and thus ran right into her. Not literally, but when he turned there she was.
She was also yelling at him.
So, of course, he let out a surprised yelp and stumbled back, losing his footing and landing on his butt. He stared up at her, wide eyed, blinking like he had very nearly been hit by a car. He felt his heart beating in his throat, but that feeling of being surprised quickly faded into embarrassment and a strange, vague sense of bitterness.
He had lost! After all that effort, he still got caught. Perhaps next time he would just have to- wait, no, he was professional and there wasn't going to be a next time. This was just a one time game.
Getting to his feet, he offered her a laugh and shook his head.
"This is a library!" he said, with feigned dignity, "you should keep your voice down."

It was lucky that the tall shelves managed to hide the silly scene from the rest of the few people mingling about the floor, although Sydney personally wouldn’t have minded. Everyone had heard her scream, so why not see the rest of the scene unfold along with it?
Her rough laughter ringing through the air, she bent her knees and offered a hand out to Tony while her other hand was on her knees for balance. Unable to contain the utter bliss that filled her entire senses, a jaw-breaking smile brightened up her freckled face as she chuckled, “Are you okay?”
As she stopped the victorious glee from dripping into her cheery tone, Sydney simply replied, “I’m sorry, Mr. Darrow.” She accompanied the apology with an exaggerated bow. “Perhaps this is my cue to take my leave then.” She raised her head to peer at the clock across the room. “I’m meeting some friends for a project soon anyways.” A disappointed pout.
With her shoulders slumped, Sydney reluctantly ambled over to the staircase. Looking like a sad child about to wave their best friend goodbye, she briefly lethargically waved just before she began to thump down the stairs.

Tony took her hand and made to get himself up with a 'ah, thank you', that came out on instinct. He was polite as ever, even if he could get away with saying that whole fiasco had been her fault. Particularly the 'him falling down and sounding like a wuss' part.
Definitely not his fault.
"I'm fine. Ah. Well, a project?" Then why was she here playing hide and seek with him? That wasn't something he ever imagined he would think to himself, but the game had happened so there the thought was. He smirked a bit, feeling silly but oddly amused. It was good, he supposed, to have some fun every once in a while.
He imagined Sydney liked to take that 'once in a while' part out and just replace it with 'day'.
Waving as she stomped off, he shook his head and smirked, then looked embarrassed as Carol poked her head to peer down the aisle. He cleared his throat and wandered back to the cart of books he had left as his distraction.
Back to work.
