Ian took the momentary break as an opportunity to buy himself a cookie to go with his coffee and chess. One of those random cravings, really - he thought momentarily about the chewy caramel chunks in the chocolate-chip-caramel cookies, and decided he had to have one. And, as he was able to walk right up to the counter to make his purchase, and a line formed behind him while the barista was fetching his cookie, it seemed all the more auspicious a time to get a snack.

When he returned to his table a few minutes later, Ian found himself short one knight. At least his opponent's computer was alright.

He could take the pawn back, but decided as he bit into his cookie and promptly got a bicuspid lodged firmly in a delicious hunk of caramel that it was not really worth it. Not right now.

Ian moved a different piece, holding it in the little hand icon for several seconds as he tried to decide where, precisely, he wanted the rook. Then made his move and looked over to the chat window. He smiled a little, which turned out quite awkward-looking as he attempted at the same time to both chew the bite of cookie and dislodge the tasty, tasty caramel from his teeth. At least they were chatting over the internet.

ParsleySage: Gah, yeah, go ahead and get that cleaned up D=
RedHerring: Okay, crisis averted. The table is all sticky now but at least the laptop is safe.
RedHerring: Sorry about that. Where were we?
ParsleySage: Don't worry about it. I went to get a cookie
ParsleySage: Oh, duh, you asked about the pie here. I should have gotten some of that. Cookies are good, at least?

Maybe, depending on how long they ended up playing, he could get some pie next.

ParsleySage's delay gave him the opportunity to fiddle with his pie, breaking it up into nearly identical pieces and laying each slice out side by side. Though he usually liked to watch what he was eating – eating was a skill, after all – trying to cut his pie and play chess had already proved disastrous. The easiest way to avoid further endangering both his lap top and his chess game was to slice the pie with his fork now and just eat the neat little pieces when he felt the need. That way he could hopefully avoid another incident.

ParsleySage: Oh, duh, you asked about the pie here. I should have gotten some of that. Cookies are good, at least?
RedHerring: Cookies are always good. The café I'm in has these crazy chocolate and caramel ones. They claim it's their signature cookie.
RedHerring: I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try one.

Johnny, turning down sweets? It was like waking up to find the sky had turned purple. Still, the green-haired teen didn't just eat anything that was put in front of him just because it contained more than one sweet thing. There had to be the correct mix of flavours and textures, otherwise it was no good. He had standards, even if they did stoop low enough to include twinkies.

Making a thoughtful noise, the teen dragged his mouse over the remaining chess pieces as he considered his next move. Perhaps it was time to drag one of the bishops out into the open. He did just that as he forked a piece of pie into his mouth, eyes darting between the chess game and the conversation window.

ParsleySage: I've got a caramel-chocolate one now. The ones here are really super-chewy. I love it.
ParsleySage: You have to like chewy, though =9

Ian typed hurriedly, holding his cookie in his mouth to free up both his hands. Then he broke off a bite and set the remainder down on a small square napkin for the moment.

When the window updated with his opponent's latest move, Ian scanned the layout as he worked on a particularly large bit of caramel. He could put RedHerring in check if he wanted, but it would be easy enough to interpose or move out of it or take the threatening piece. It might be worth it anyway, though, to keep things interesting. And, well, if he was trying a more aggressive game today....

Ian shifted one of his own bishops, and the frame around the chess board flickered briefly to indicate that he had placed his opponent in check, then went back to gnawing on his cookie to see what his opponent would do.

... A good chance he would lose his bishop, but it would make for an interesting experiment.

RedHerring: Really? Huh. I didn't think anyone other than Fourth Cup sold them around here.
RedHerring: So much for signature treat. I'll have to try one though.

Fourth Cup, of course, being the café that the two boys were seated in, unbeknownst to both of them. But in all fairness what were the chances of playing an opponent over the internet in the same café, especially when said café wasn't even an internet café? It was perfectly logical to chock it all up to coincidence, but the coincidences were definitely starting to stack up. At least Ian hadn't done anything to give away his current location in Destiny City.

Johnny drummed his fingers on the table until ParsleySage made his next move, more out of habit than impatience. The drumming ceased as soon as he was put in check, however, as the green-haired teen leaned his elbows on the table to study the board. To move the king away or get rid of the bishop...

With a quick upwards flick of his mouth he moved his queen up to take the bishop. One bishop eliminated and with it, the check. Back to ParsleySage now.
