Novasurge
I finally played it. It was pretty fun... and crazy.

The concept of it being a "Protect the VIP" kind of game is lost immediately when your team is made of hardened pros that has finished all the campaigns in expert more than once, and have no trouble tackling Realism Expert in under two hours (True story, we did it just this week).

It felt like a regular Expert game with a babysitting component, the only problem is that the baby sometimes glitches when you gently place it on the ground and drops out of the stage entirely.

I've played Gnome TWICE, and twice it has glitched.

On the bright side, Ben showed us how to skip the airplane event in Swamp Fever, so now we can do it even better.

Also, Ben had the gnome when the tanks got him in the end, but one of the tanks was kind enough to punch the little guy really far away... In our direction. So, thanks to tanks (LOL) we finished the campaign alright.

I liked BO better, to tell the truth. That one was a complete rush, very crazy and intense. So I'm voting Bleed Out.

Still, I can see the difference between the game types: While BO is much hardcore, and definitely not the kind of stuff you'd want to play in a PUG, Last Gnome really does feel like it could work much better in a PUG than BO ever will.

I played LGOE on Hard Rain normal. Go figure they made me grab the gnome. So I followed them across all the water and what not, got to the sugar mill and ended up dropping it accidentally. Apparently they aren't very forgiving. >>

I haven't played it since.

I voted for BO too. It was pretty fun.

With friends, or a PUG?

Personally, I also found that in PUG, many people don't want to pick up the Gnome, and it always ends up being a Goddamn Mess of a Game.

I think that a "VIP" kind of game would involve more mechanics instead of "Just carry the damn Gnome into the Safe Room"

If it were up to me, a "Protect the VIP" game that would be balanced and entertaining would be like this:

- At the start of the round, a player is randomly chosen to be the VIP. This player has to carry the Gnome for X minutes after leaving the SR before being forced to drop it down. Then, a new VIP is selected and that person has to carry the Gnome. Repeat until reaching the SR or finishing the campaign.
- The VIP can drop the Gnome to attack, but that only freezes his Countdown. He has to actively carry the Gnome to be able to switch the Gnome with someone else.
- The Infected attack the VIP first, the other Survivors second. If the Gnome is dropped, the Infected go after the player who is closest to the Gnome.
- The VIP who is not carrying the Gnome can't get separated from the Gnome for too long / too much of a distance (Either way could work, but it'd need to be tested), or else they'd start to suffer the effects of standing on Spitter Goo.

That's how I envision a proper "Protect the VIP" game using the LGOE mechanics, expanded.

Later tonight I'll make my vote... For Bleed Out. I suspect that one's gonna win out in the end, so chances are my friends and I will finally play The Parish on Bleed Out Expert biggrin

Stupidly hard, everyone would play it for like 10 or 15 minutes before getting frustrated and hopping back to Realism Versus.

Last Gnome on Earth. Encore week...

Feh.

I seriously have no idea how LGOE won. NO IDEA.

Particularly after last Friday, when I decided to do a Quickplay, see if in a PUG I could enjoy the Gnome a bit more.

The game MADE A LOBBY FOR ME. There were NO MUTATION LOBBIES. And it was Friday Night. When Realism Versus came out, the thing was PACKED.

------------

Now, if the evidence found in the code by some people in the Steam forums is right, we WILL be getting the Gnome back in a VIP Versus game. That should be more interesting than TLGOE.

Realism Versus is a ******** joke. It's WAY to one sided and shouldn't have been made a permanant game mode.

Xeno-Gaze
Realism Versus is a ******** joke. It's WAY to one sided and shouldn't have been made a permanant game mode.

Of course it's one sided: It takes away most of the HUD team advantages of the human team, while the S.I. team keeps them.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you: Even in the 1st game, there's been a huge portion of the fan base demanding that they tweak the Survivors, because once they get Tier 2 Weapons in both games, playing as a S.I. turns out to be not as gratifying.

Of course, Realism Versus addresses this problem by making you think: Now you don't need to set up a coordinated attack all the time, if you catch one of the survivors unaware and manage to drag him out of their team mates FOV. And once you do that, your team can set up an even more complex attack.

Let's face it: In Versus, most people really, REALLY look forward to playing the S.I., and by giving them a slight advantage in RV, Valve is pleasing the fans.

I like both games, personally... But some of my best, most fun matches ever have been in Realism Versus.

LMOE is good only to make videos and possibly get a spotlight in the L4D blog.

Everyone agrees that the mode is an interesting proposition, but ultimately a boring one: The lack of Commons makes evading the SI relatively easier most of the time, and sometimes you can just gain enough tempo to outrun all the SI, or at least create enough distance to shoot at them at your leisure.

And that's without considering that the differences between Easy and EXPERT are MINIMAL, so it's almost a one-difficulty game.

I, for one, am looking forward to CHAINSAW MASSACRE.

We'll be playing this friday. We'll be playing hard. That is, EXPERT. Because that's how we roll.

Chainsaw Massacre brings the LAUGHTER back in SLAUGHTER.

Some notes about it, now that we're touching the matter:

- It's a relatively easy mode, when you know what you're doing. As all the players start with pistols, it is ALWAYS advisable for at least one to go Dual Pistols instead of a chainsaw. It helps a lot with the Boomers and Smokers (The 2 relatively bigger threats in this mode).
- The only other big regular danger is Friendly Fire, particularly on Expert. You have to be careful when you go through hordes, or else you might incap/kill a teammate faster than you can say "TAAAANK!".
- On the subject of Tanks, in this mode it seems they have x2 life. Or at least they stay 2x as long on fire... On all difficulties. Which is good, considering that advancing through hordes, escaping from a tank, using a chainsaw is one of the most exciting things ever.

What was the next mode again? The one in which only 1 survivor can finish the campaign?

I think I'm a wee bit behind. It's just a tad hard to keep this up to date when I don't have Live.

UGH.
