Shukaku is a Tanuki. In western, it should be called, a raccoon-dog because it is an atypical species of dog that can grow up to 60 cm. Tanuki is from the Dog species.

and as for the Tanuki and the Kitsune, I believe that like all friends they had their diffrences, fought and competed against on another but in the end they were still friends in the end. I find many more stories of kitsune and Tanuki helping one another than fighting
