I love it. Admittedly there could be quite a bit less cinematics.

I like it.
The battles are fast paced. The roles are put to good use. Each character is still different even when they have the same roles which caters to the different players' playstyles. The music fits and the voice acting is just right (Though there's a VA that didn't really do well IMO).
I like the thought that even if they are selling this Final Fantasy franchise, they are not afraid to stray away from the gameplay everyone is used to. (Much disappointment to the retro gamers, yes.) But at least there is a promise of a different game for every title released. Though sometimes, this DOES tick me off. Like putting into consideration God of War. Everybody says, "Wow! GoW3 is the best!" But when I look at it, it's just... GoW1 with better graphics and maybe some new features for the fanboys to drool over or hate. (w/e) So yeah, the change is good.
On another note, I like the smartly placed nostalgic elements they placed all around the game. Examples would be:
- Lightning - Storm(Noctis) - Cloud (FF7) - Game starts with a train, a black dude, a hot chick(kweh), and a soldier. (FF7) - Technology abuses nature. (FF7 - FF10) - A medium is used for magic. (Though for the heroes' cases it's different) (FF7 - materia) - Machine riding (FF6 - lol. slightly pointless but fun while it lasted.)
I'm sure I'll be able to spot on others soon. I'm still early in the game being addicted to upgrading. sweatdrop

Personally, I think most of the complaints towards the game are by people who haven't played it/played for 2 hours.
I liked Snow; FAR FAR FAR better then Cloud and Squall, plus he's awesome to play as and drops his hero act about 1/3 - 1/2 way through. Plus it's always hilarious watching Snow launching PSICOM into the air by punching them in the ... stomach, back and head.
I've also notice that a lot of people who say it is linear don't know what they are talking about, and probably picked it up from someone else. ALL the games were linear; for example, FF6 you could technically go anywhere, but only certain places would advance the story, and you are essentially made to go there in order to beat the story, just as it is here. The real problem would technically be the rather straight forward maps, but that isn't linearity. Plus, from chapter 3 onwards, they aren't just straight forward either. In a way, it is a dungeon crawler RPG, as opposed to the -truly- open box FFXII that people didn't like.
Also, SophieMorita, have you acutally played it yourself? Until you do don't let other people decide for you, since there is a MASSIVE chance of them being a FFVI/VII biased noob. Even if you don't have the console doesn't mean that other people didn't like it means it sucks.
So, aside from that, I personally loved the game myself, and just wish I had more time to play it.

me i loved final fantasy 13's storyline, the whole game was incredible. the only draw back is the lack of free roam and how much of a pain it is to max out your characters

To Parth: FFX didn't have a level up system. It's almost exactly like FFXII's Crystarium System except it's a Sphere Grid.
Anyways, I LOVE FFXIII. -The characters all had a unique storyline (I loved Sazh's and Snows alot) -The setting is VERY different from other FF's It's a very futuristic feel -Yeah it may be linear gameplay, but after a certain point it's like BOOM walk anywhere find everything -The soundtrack was awfully different. I liked it but I think Nobuo Uematsu made better soundtracks(Battle with Seymour, Boss fights, Vs. Sin) -The missions were EPIC. I hated doing all the Titans trials though to fight a guy that was EPIC and took forever to take down just for ONE Genji Glove -My second favorite FF (FFX being the first)

Customization is great in moderation. I have numerous RPGs that offer custom characters from here to China and I've never beaten [or even wanted to replay] any of them. It's too much for me. Hours slaving away trying to unlock some uber-sword and by luck or bad design I accidently merge [fuse, forge, meld whatever] this super weapon into a Lv1 whip with -2 strength and a useless buff like float.
At this point, I'm not having fun.
As far as FFXIII is concerned, the upgrading was expansive enough for my limited amout of attention. I have a wife and two kids and crap to do. I don't have time for quests to Uber-world for King Logan's Trifecta Armor of Doom that will take 40+ hours and your first born child to uncover and THEN take to a blacksmith in Middle of F-ing Nowhere, Ivalice.

Just finished playing FF13, FF 7-13 - no side game like ceberus or the Zack and not the online one FF11 either
But 7,8,9,10,10-2,12 and now 13
I can Say that I loved the Paradigms but Also I hated only being able to use one character I would always be shouting at one of them to stop being an idiot and cast the right spell or attack
Auto Battle was kinda disappointing just button mashing but I guess for all the FF noobs it helps them XD Not to say i didn't hit it 90% percent of the time
The No Gil was also pretty disappointing but I guess since how the component/upgrading thing was made. If you just normally got gil then upgrading would be made to easy. So it was a good decision you would have to fight monsters who might or might not drop something of value then sell it.
I also felt it was a bit too short maybe in the overall game story Also Hated Hope- Little Emo @$$ trying to kill Snow SNow was awsome! XD Sazh Only black guy in FF13 I looked around. except his son which made it funny with the chocobo even funnier
I still loved the game and cant wait for 14 to come out, and maybe 13-2

As far as being limited to "Up or Down" Pass or fail, I would have to lean toward Pass, or Up.
STORY- The overall story was interesting and fun to play. Overall it lacked a lot of the plot twists previous Final Fantasy had. Still had its fair share of them but I felt they were limited, and also pretty predictable at times. (I saw Barthandelus being a Fal Cieth from a mile away.) Despite some of those set backs in the story, it was still a fun and enjoyable story to play.
CHARACTERS- A pet peeve of mine in RPG's or fantasy based games are completely human casts. I love a diverse cast of characters expanding different races. I think an all human cast is boring. But the characters in this game were really flushed out and enjoyable to play through the game with. Fang was by far my favorite, I loved her personality, and how she is a contrast to Lightning in how easily Lightning could have ended up like her, or vice versa. Sazh has one of thee best character development out of any character in FF history. You really feel for him and his problems, to me he is much more than just the guy with a baby chocobo living in his hair. Lightning was a good but not great main character, Snow was alright but not great. Hope I looked at like Vaan, only used properly in the game plot. Vanielle was at times annoying but not to the extreme where I absolutely hated her.
GAME PLAY- The battle system was similar to that of XII, but improved, it was more smooth, fluent, and better. And while that was its strength, it's weakness falls more on a matter of opinion for me rather than an actual flaw. And that is I miss the old style turn based fighting system. XII was an interesting change of pace, XIII made it better, now I'm ready to go back to the turn based style I loved from previous games. Fun, but time to go back to the way it was, if it's not broke, don't fix it.
GRAPHICS- So far the most beautiful graphics I've seen in a PS3 game. This game is a continuing testimate to Square Enix's dedication to push for the best in presentation of it's products. I think I watched the opening cut scene a dozen times in a row before I actually started the game I was that impressed by the graphics.
MUSIC- First off, the music was not done by Nobu Uematsu, that being said, I still think the music was still pretty good. At times I forget the that Nobu didn't do the score for this game. But even though it had a great score it just didn't quite match up to the music of it's predecessors. The Barthandelus boss fight music was by far my favorite song in the game and one of my favorite FF songs overall. But while most other FF games score is roughly averages an A or A-, XIII I would rank a solid B. Very good, but not quite as good as the previous games.
Conclusion- Final Fantasy XIII was a fun and enjoyable game. A great installment for the Playstation 3. Some of my concerns and dislikes for the game fall more on personal preferance, I don't hold that against the game.

Would be nice to address the topic, I guess.
I love FFXIII. Because so many people, strangers and loved ones alike, told me it was terrible, I gave it a chance. And I was pleasantly surprised. It's fluid, dynamic, fun, fast-paced, interesting and it kept me entertained. From a literary [or even common sense] standpoint, the story toward the end was ridiculous. But battles make or break a game for me. Let's face it, in an RPG or any game, the goal is to get to the big badass boss and kick a**. It's not about townz, or minigames, or linearity. Those are fun [or not fun. If you want to see what the FF team does when fans b***h about linearity, just look at X-2 aka FF: The Hot Mess.]
And FFXIII has a great, subtle nostalgia factor, as mentioned above. No Biggs and Wedge, but I have no idea who they are any way, So no biggie.

What bugged me about this game was that it usually takes me a few weeks to beat a Final Fantasy (real life restrictions as well as super frustration rage quits). I beat this one in 5 days.
3 days story line. 1 day leveling 1 day final area
It was too easy. and Simple. and plain. No immersion. No mini quests (missions really dont count)
The leveling system at first glance looked like a sphere grid. No, sphere grid in the later levels gave you option on how to build your char. This one, straight line.
Speaking of lines: mostly every level (map) was linear.
battles were really fun. The only challenge was the crazy hp enemies have. Later battles got repetitive.
What bugs me most about this game is that it is a solid game (9/10). While it isn't an RPG.
Normally thats a good thing. "Oh hay look, a good game!"
I was looking forward for an RPG from my favourite RPG franchise (next to star ocean). I got a weird hybrid that didnt fuel my fix like the many games before have.
Great game, Horrid Final Fantasy.
