A discovery

Darby sauntered down the alley next to their house on an evening patrol, warbling tunelessly as she went. Due to her fur, she was ignorant of the cold that kept everyone indoors - in fact, she loved evenings like this. They were always soft and blue on the sharpness of winter daytime, and maybe, sometimes, snow was falling down as she was on her walk. As self proclaimed Queen of the Alley, it was her duty to go on these patrols. You never knew what people were up to.

Sitting back for a moment, she blinked and tilted her head. Now that she thought of it, things were rather quiet...

A piercing yowl, and something slammed head-on into her; they both went down in a tangle of paws and squalling and scratching, as even more cats went flying past, terrified. Darby squirmed. "Lemme GO, you idiot!" she howled. The orange tom was startled enough to let go. He was even more startled when Darby flowed up into an angry bundle of cream and orange fur, looking like a furious behemoth ready to kill. "Now what's going on?" she demanded, planting herself firmly in the way. They'd almost trampled her! And she recognized him. Another one of those flighty, flirty alley cats. Meh.

He hovered there, confronted by the much larger feline, clearly nervous of what lay behind him. As she stepped forward, the orange tom relented. "There's something back there." he whispered, with the air of sharing a great secret. "Something strange."

"Something strange?" If neighborhood kids were trying to fool with the alley cats...or, help her, their own kids...that wouldn't be good. So much for a quiet evening. Little details didn't escape the tom's eye; the tiny claws flexing, fur bristling, tail lashing, that meant a possible trouncing for the first thing the ciel saw. Darby in a Mood wasn't something to be tangled with. He recognized this and hastened to explain. Her guard had relaxed, and he took the opportunity to scoot away from the thing he was so afraid of.

The explanation didn't make any sense. She stared at him, slowly calming down, only to be confused. "Let me get this straight. There's a flower but not a flower in a flower thing?" Toms.

Shaking his head, the cat gestured for her to follow him; he couldn't see any other way. Darned ladies. She sure wasn't going to let him go unless she saw the creepy thing for herself. She had to push her way through with her shoulders, dirt crumbling down around her, into her eyes - the opening soon widened into an alleyway much like the one next to their own house. It wasn't hard to miss the thing. Bright orange, a flowerpot lay tilted in the dirt, covered in the dusty skeletons of dead vines. This she pulled away.

"This is what you guys were scared of?" she asked wonderingly, just looking at the tom.

He shifted, noticably uneasy. "But it moved. It hissed at us!"

THAT was too much. Darby snorted, unable to help herself; she broke into a fit of laughter. All of her remaining irritation melted away in an instant. And here she'd thought it was something horrible! Imagine, being terrified by a leaf in a pot! It was kind of weird, since all the other plants were dead...maybe it was plastic or something. Still.

"It's a leaf!" she squealed. "OOH! OOH! The big bad leafy's gonna attack us! Ohno!" She giggled helplessly at his expression. It wouldn't hurt to take it off their paws. Things were getting crazy back at home, and it'd be a welcome distraction for some of the younger kids. It'd keep them busy from their usual job of wrecking everything in sight. Now that she thought of it, that was a really good plan. "Pathetic. Well, if it's gonna freak you guys out so much, I might as well take it back. Hee...oh, damn, this thing is kinda heavy..."

Mobile or not, the alley cats were glad to see it go.

Trials and tribulations

"One drop, two drops, three..." Salem counted from the book in his hand. It was a Science textbook - science being the astra's number one interest, besides reading, of course. He carefully tilted the bottle over a glass of water. The solution wound a path down through the clear water of the glass. After waiting a moment, he then picked it up and crossed the room to the leaf. "Okay, lil buddy. Drink up!" he announced, and poured the entire glass in, watching as the water slowly bubbled into the soil. Bobbing on his hooves, he clung to the edge of the pot...and waited.

He didn't have long. As it drank, the leaf started to quiver. For a second, it looked like it had turned blue - no, wait. It HAD turned blue! Salem grinned. It was working!

"What did you DO?!"

Darby's shriek was accompanied by the sound of breaking glass. He'd dropped the bottle. Salem darted in front of the spill to hide it, but the ciel wasn't paying any attention to him; she scrambled to get to the leaf, watching in horror as it turned even more blue. "What did you do?" she demanded again of the astra.

"'Speriment." he said meekly. "It's just blue food coloring, not like it's going to hurt it or anything...I didn't think it'd even work with a leaf." Now she was going to ruin everything. It wasn't fair.

'Why do you even care, Darb?' Shaking her head, she stared worriedly at it some more. "I wonder if we can get it out."

More water didn't help. Washing the leaf off was next to pointless. She even allowed him to put yellow coloring in, to turn it back to some semblance of green, but the leaf wasn't taking anything else in after that. If she didn't know better, she'd say it didn't trust them. And if she didn't know better, she'd probably agree.

It was useless to do anything else. Finally the ciel relented. "Just...don't do stuff like that anymore." she grumbled. Salem's crestfallen expression worked its magic at that statement. Hating herself for it, she added, "You can do stuff like...putting food coloring in dinner tonight. I won't tell anyone, okay?"

The leaf wiggled unhappily, listening to Salem's eager footsteps pounding away, obviously heading straight for the kitchen. Its poor dignity!

Awww heart

It took longer than a week for the blue color to finally fade away. It took even longer than that for the leaf's pride to heal. Blue! 'course, it was kind of interesting, but it couldn't see anything different about being blue, besides getting stared at. Someone took pity on it and brought up a carnation (for Valentines' Day) up to 'visit'. It was the exact same color. The leaf had tentatively tried to talk to it, in a leafy way, but the thing turned out to be dead. Ick.

Once the flower started getting brown, it was time for a new friend. She was a little yellow bloom. And for once, he actually had some semblance of company that wasn't furry and thought it was partially insane for talking to a leaf. For the bloom's view of the matter, she thought she could like anybody, even Sabriel. At least, until she met the leaf.

Being stuck up was bad. Not knowing you were was even worse. She endured it, but wasn't happy about it, and it must've showed. On this day, a rainy, sulky day, she could tell he wanted something. But instead of the usual chatter, he abruptly spoke up and asked - you don't like me, do you?

The bloom couldn't argue with that.

Okay, then. I'll leave you alone. We don't have to be friends.

Oh, well... As an empathetic soul, she pretty much guessed what he was trying. It'd be mean of her not to do something. And he HAD asked (sort of), which was a miracle. Sending warmth in response, she hoped he'd take it as yes, they could be friends. As long as he stopped being annoying once in a while.

The Eden was embarassed to find he was relieved, and covered it with pleasure at his own sneaky manuevering - that took real skill! Well...if you insist.

Uh oh...

Darby
Dear Journal,

Eww. Rainy days are icky. And so cold. I miss summer! Summer with warm days, and birds singing, and shining suns and green...and...and leaves. Leaves that are actually normal. The one I found still hasn't died, though it's been lookin' a bit peaky ever since the rain started. ;/ Gimme a moment to move it, okay? *shuffles off*

-Ten minutes later-

Okay. I stuck it under a lamp :3 That makes a difference! As I was saying --

There goes the phone. Be right back!

Chinchillie
I'm so confused ;-; I called home to tell everyone we were visiting tomorrow - 'we' meaning Sabriel and me, that is - and Darby picked up the phone. She started freaking out. It was WEIRD. She insisted that there was a fire at home and no, nobody was allowed in, and when I asked her about it forgot completely that there had ever been a fire and was certain it was a flood instead. Would the phone still be working? Iunno.

So Sabriel's not coming after all. What kind of parent would I be if I led him into that? Darby doesn't usually act like that, though. Something must be up. o_O

Darby
AGHNONONONO.

Chin's coming home! The leaf won't be a SECRET anymore and she'll KILL me because half of the things we bring in end up turning into destructive fox cat things and it's just a stupid leaf but she'll kill meeeeee! The Secret must be protected!

This is bad. crying

Oh oh...when the leaf is put under the lamp is suddenly decides to twitch as if it felt too hot. For a few moments it seems like it's going to wilt, but just a few seconds later is appears to be as fresh as always. What happens ?
PostPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2006 2:19 pm

Feeling very frazzled, Darby slapped the journal shut and tried to come up with a plan, putting her chin on her paws and gazing absently at the leaf. Hide it? No, one of the kids would wonder where it was, and ruin everything. Pretend it didn't exist? Nooo...

The leaf twitched. Starting upright, the ciel stared, hardly able to believe what she was seeing. Seconds after she noticed the change, it was restored to its usual shiny green health, leaving her baffled.

"Uh, leaf? You okay?" she inquired nervously. Maybe it was too hot? Not taking her eyes from it, she flipped the lamp off, leaving the room to the gray light pouring in from outside.

Instead of stopping the movement the leaf's tip tries to move in circles now and is slowly becoming white and fades into slight shades of grey. It seems like it's trying to bury itself with earth now and suddenly starts to glow faintly.
PostPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2006 4:01 pm

Oh, geez. Her first reaction was to run for it as the leaf started moving even more, wiggling into the dirt like a corkscrew. Was it trying to bury itself? Should she try and save it or something?

Darby stood up on the chair and leaned closer, trying to see better. It looked to her like the leaf was slowly taking in the pale rainwashed light, the effect becoming even more pronounced when it began to glow.

"Leaf??" she squeaked, alarmed. This didn't make ANY sense!

As it hears the well-known voice the leaf stops the wriggling and starts to glow more intensively. It is fading from white to black within seconds and dips the room into a strange athmosphere as it starts to screech and squeak loudly. The light becomes so intense that you're not able to see the buried leaf properly anymore and suddenly you hear something bursting.

The light has vanished and the flowerpot seems to have exploded as the leaf turned into a toddler who looks straight at your face.

Hearing the terrible screeching from the living room, Salem instantly dropped what he was doing and tore down the stairs to the rescue, concluding the only possible explanation. The house was under attack! He was met with a blinding burst of light that forced him to back up and look away - but as soon as the light faded, rushed to Darby's side.

Her eyes were fixed on the toddler's ice blue ones, and she didn't seem to realize he was there at all. They stared at each other for only a moment. Then the ciel slumped back, fortunately caught by the astra boy. Her final words were thus:

"I'm dead."

Salem lowered her carefully, needing a touch of effort to roll her off onto the ground. Only then did he glance up at their new charge. "Hi." he said to the boy awkwardly, hoping the toddler didn't recognize him as the bringer of blueness. This was going to be fun..

Darby's limp body started to roll up the side of the sofa. Salem put his back into it. With a final effortful heave she flopped onto the cushions, and he sank to the floor, panting. "You need to diet." Salem said fondly up at her, amazed she hadn't so much as twitched while being pushed all over the room. Looking around, he saw the toddler had found the yellow bloom and was patting it into the spilled dirt.

"Come on, now." Salem gestured once he was done. "We need to find you someplace before...um..." Cough. "..she wakes up." He seemed to take the hint. Abandoning the flower, the white haired boy trailed up the stairs after him, wide blue eyes taking in everything along the way. Did they even have room? What were they going to -do-? Salem worried chronically. He could have collapsed with relief, remembering there was indeed a room open - he snapped his fingers and strode over to the door.

It was one of the storage rooms that nobody wanted due to just how small it was, with a large bed in one corner under a sloping ceiling that had meant quite a few banged heads to sleepers. Right beside it was a closet, jumbles and jumbles of dusty boxes spilling out over that entire side of the room. There was barely enough space for the two to stand once Salem had ushered him in, a fact he looked duly embarassed about. He cleared his throat. "I guess this'll be your room for a little wh -- HEY!" The Eden had shot by on the words 'your room' and was already on his way to inspect the closet. Salem's cough caught his attention again. "And PLEASE, please don't go downstairs unless somebody says something, okay?"

There. Job done. Stepping out into the hallway, he quietly shut the door, but needn't have bothered. The boy was all but oblivious to the rest of the world - the last glimpse he had of him was a fuzzy white head buried in boxes. Crazy kid.

Cain curled up on the bed, a book opened over his knees. He was finding it very hard to read, however. Two people were arguing downstairs. They were talking very loudly, and every time he got into reading again, one of them broke out in a shout and interrupted. Finally, he slapped the book shut and shoved it under the bed, getting to his feet and tiptoeing to the edge of the stairs so he could hear better.

"What d'you mean you're staying? And what're you doing? I'm not DONE yet!"

"Making a sandwich." Chin rooted in the fridge some more, emerging with leftover salmon and a bag of cucumbers. Darby peeked around her elbow - yup, a monster sandwich, using most of the food in their fridge. If a curve could be seen under the girl's shirt, the ciel suspected it wasn't a baby at all, but all of those horrible sandwiches added up. "We didn't have time to get dinner or anything. What?" She took a huge bite out of one end and eyed Darby, innocently puzzled by the irritated expression. "I know you're unhappy about this...but there isn't much else to say."

Salmon and cucumbers. Sharp cheese. Mayo. Oddly enough, the combination sounded almost good, but Darby quashed that thought, since it was distracting her from the matter at hand. She rested her head on her paws, which were laid flat on the table. "There's so much that could be goin' wrong." she said fretfully. "I'm worried, kay?"

Darby wouldn't admit it unless she was really upset. For being such a grouchy creature, she had a good heart, and didn't get worked up over nothing. She leaned over to give the ciel a one armed hug, reassuringly. "Don't worry. I'm trying my best to make sure everything works out." Goodness knew it was hard enough getting this far. She was doing a good job at acting nonchalant, but her worries had surfaced again by this confrontation - at least there had been a small break before Darby exploded. Sabriel had scattered at the first sign of arguement.

That's what I'm worried about. Darby thought grumpily. To spare her poor friend's feelings, she didn't say it aloud. But heck. It didn't need to be said. The two sat without words after that, each unsure of how to go on, while Chin silently worked on her sandwich, feeling awkward.

The silence didn't last. Cain effectively ended the tender moment by peeking into the kitchen right then, curiosity overcoming all good sense. Normal looking except for the wings, one of the only normal people he'd seen set foot inside the house...he started to ask, then saw Darby frantically flapping her paws at him, and remembered, belatedly, her warning about visitors. Whoops! The sound of fleeing footsteps were all that remained of Cain, but of course it was too late.

Chin steadied herself. You couldn't properly choke a person until you were nice and calm. "Mind explaining who that was?" she asked, resigned.

"Who, him?" Darby twiddled her paws and looked at the ceiling. "Weeeell. You know we found this leaf..."

Little by little the story emerged. Another kid. Of course. And Darby was yelling at HER. This was the most complicated day she'd had for a long time.

It took a while before Cain dared venture downstairs again. "Pfft! Speak for yourself, pudgy!" A round of drunken laughter blasted out the kitchen door. Evidently the two had made up. "You might've laid off the mayo. How much more before you go and explode??" More guffawing. He worked up the courage to peek inside, only to find...the two 'ladies' seated around the table, not a drop of alcohol in sight. The strange girl who'd come over that morning was in possession of an absolutely enormous sandwich that she kept trying to bite but burst into a fit of hysterics every time she tried. Ah. Two girls together, drunk or not, were giddy idiots. He filed this away for further thought.

Unfortunately they'd spotted him, and Darby waved him over with a paw. "Hey, Cain!" she chirped. "You want to meet Chin? She's okay after all. Well..." Exchanging a look with Chin, she rolled her eyes and smirked. "Maybe not." The boy reluctantly shuffled in.

"S'nice to meet you." He put on his best formal voice. When he held out a hand to shake, Darby leaned in and whispered something that had to do with 'told ya he's shy'. Cain frowned a little, deciding to let it go. He was not shy! He liked to make a good impression. Some people could mistake anything. Shaking the hand, he found it a little hesitant but pleasantly free of talons or anything like that. Strike one against the ciel again - so much for her being an evil, vengeful creature who would murder at the sight of another kid - she might even be nice!

He remembered the earlier shouting. Taking a seat (he could barely see over the table), he studied her curiously, unaware that she was doing the same, taking in with interest the ice blue eyes and white hair. Chin coughed nervously. When she glanced at Darby, wondering why he wasn't saying anything, Darby just quirked an ear and shrugged. It was a Cain thing.

"Um. Sooooo." She rubbed the back of her neck, smiling faintly. "Darby tells me you're friends with our little bloom? That's good to hear. Sabriel wasn't all that nice to it." And so on and so on. Neither of them let on that he'd been the source of an arguement, and Chin was nothing but nice, even though he was a bit too quiet for her to be comfortable. He obligingly followed while they toured the house and was left alone after that. Later on he found out just who Sabriel was. That satisfied one of his questions - the other he asked Darby in an offside while Chin was sleeping. "Did she eat a watermelon? Wouldn't that hurt?"

He didn't understand why Darby burst into laughter."She's going to have a baby! See, when it gets even bigger it'll eat its way out of her tummy and then you'll have a brother or sister. Won't that be delightful?"

Well, it turned out to be not much of a crisis after all. The door opened while the boy was in his room, and long before he'd started to be bored with the closet, the sound of the door slamming closed and the sound of rushing wings past his window came, accompanied by the sound of Darby pounding her way up the stairs. She looked like she'd recovered from the shock. "We handled that pretty well!" she told him, throwing her bulk down on the rug. "Nothin' to worry about. So...um...you have a name? And d'you want another room?"

Well, the visit turned out to be not much of a crisis after all. Long before he'd started to be bored with the closet, the sound of the door slamming closed and the sound of rushing wings came past his window, accompanied by the sound of Darby pounding her way up the stairs. She looked like she'd recovered from the shock. "We handled that pretty well!" she told him, throwing her bulk down on the rug. "Nothin' to worry about. They've gone to get groceries."

The ciel paused to beam at him. "AND I think she likes you. Good job, Cain. Good job."

No, it wasn't a crisis. But what came after was much, much worse.

The terror flung itself at him. Belatedly Cain realized it wasn't a REAL cat, but another toddler - and then the cat was tearing at him with inch long claws, shrieking angrily. Frantic, he kicked at it and earned a howl in reply. It rolled off of him - and onto its feet, ready to attack again. Cain did the only thing he could, and went for it before it went for him. Oh, he hadn't wanted to fight, but his pride was at stake here!

The evil animal was a lot stronger than it looked, but it was a brute, and brutes weren't supposed to be fast. Cain scored a few hits on it (biting an ear, flailing a hand into an eye, stomping on its tails) before hands reached into the growling, chittering mess and roughly hauled him away. Panting furiously, he scowled at the black cat now held in Darby's jaws, and pushed ineffectively at Salem's hands. Similarily, the cat did everything in its power to wriggle free, but Darby held fast. She looked very dark indeed.

"Sabriel, meet Cain." Sabriel bared his teeth.

"Cain, meet Sabriel." Cain glared at the cat through a swelling eye, struggling to get out of Salem's clutches. Similarily, the cat did everything it could to wriggle free, but Darby's jaws held fast on the scruff of his neck. "You're going to be
friends." she added in a growl.

Sabriel turned out to be the worst horror of all. Most of the time he was skulking around the Mishap HQ, but came through often enough...in a week's time he'd made Tenebrion run crying into his room, got haunted by the wisp in revenge, and got into a fight with Cain. Two egos did not react well when they met. Sabe bore scratches from blunt toddler nails, even though Cain had gotten off worse.

It was going to be a looong summer..

Ilusen
Ilusen stumbled into the Eden Project HQ with a pair of sleepy toddlers resting on each side of her hip. Her face was bright red from having to carry them along the street, they weren't as light as they first seemed! She had been having a very very difficult time with them both this morning, more so than usual, and it wasnt because of the sibling rivalry which is almost always present, but because they were extremely restless.

Dylan had been whining on most of the night, getting up and down, up and down and waking Ilusen up because of scary dreams, his crying he would wake his sister Seleece up who would also start to cry. Ilusen had sat up most of the night trying to get them to settle down, because when they were asleep they were fine, which was strange because they never did like sleeping. She hoped that by talking to some of the other parents she would be able to suss out what was going on, prehaps this was normal for this stage?

Placing both of the drowsy toddlers down on the sofa's she sat between them with her head in her hands, absolutely shattered herself she started to doze off.

Chinchillie
Darby was having troubles of her own that morning. 'And it's got to be hot on top of things, doesn't it.' she reflected grumpily, walking up the path to the HQ. It was that much worse because she had several pounds of toddler leaning against her. With a noisy sigh she swiveled her head around. "I'm not a carry horse, Cain."

"Sorry." he whispered. He leaned back again, earning another sigh, this time of relief. What was wrong with him, anyway? For such an energetic toddler this quiet was amazing. Not to mention how unhappy he'd been the last few days, and couldn't explain it to her. Cain looked exhausted. Frowning, she watched him struggle on his own for a few seconds, then growled, squinching her eyes shut. "Fine. Just...try not to lean so much, okay?"

In this fashion they entered the HQ - stumbling all the way. At first Darby thought it was empty, but as her eyes adjusted to the indoors she saw someone sleeping on the couch. Three someones, in fact. If they were both her kids...well, pity on the poor woman. "Keep quiet if you can." she murmured to Cain. He was watching Dylan and Seleece, and hardly needed the warning.

Ilusen
Ilusen jolted awake suddenly, not from the entrance of Darby and Cain but from the fact that she had just about fallen head first off the sofa. She blinked her eyes adjusting to the sudden light change and looked around the room, noticing she had been joined by someone else "Hey.." she said sleepily "You here for some answers too?" she said nodding towards the toddler that rested on her side "Just what I was doing before" she said rubbing her eyes and smiling "These two little... darlings kept me awake most of the night."

Chinchillie
Darby absently tracked the woman's progress off the couch from the corner of her eye, keeping the other one on Cain, who took the opportunity to do a full exploration of the room. She jumped at the sound of a voice and spun around, fur starting to puff. "Oh. Hi." she said blankly, realizing who it was. Ah. "I hope we didn't wake you up?" Embarassed, she ran a paw over her fur and tilted her head to the side, listening with curiosity, feeling even more pathetic. Sleep deprived, and they'd come in and woken her up. Great.

At the last sentence the ciel grinned. Now that sounded familiar. "Maybe it's a plague." she suggested. "Or the heat. They like that most of the time?"

Ilusen
"Oh no no, dont worry I can sleep through an atomic bomb most of the time, noise doesnt bother me, i just jolted myself awake by nearly falling off the couch" she laughed stopping a yawn. "Im Ilusen by the way, and the sleeping children either side of me are Dylan and Seleece, they're most certainly not usually this quiet.. but they make alot of fuss when they're awake so im just letting them doze to get some peace!"

She considered the suggestions which were put forward "Maybe it is the heat, both of thier souls are animals from much cooler climates so prehaps its that that is bothering them..." She paused a moment to think about this, looking thoughtful she bit her bottom lip. "Well, whatever it is I hope it stops soon because I really like my sleep! and im getting none of it with these two wailing on all day and night"

Chinchillie
The two didn't look capable of wailing right now, Darby thought, taking a closer look. ...was that a tooth? Huh. "Glad to hear it. Well, not the not being able to sleep thing, but you know." She shrugged and grinned at Ilusen. "Darby here. It's nice to meet you."

Cain, mostly finished his inspection, crept around the back of the couch. By standing on his tippy toes he could see Dylan and Seleece better. They were sleeping in the middle of the day, which seemed odd to him. To poke? Or not to poke?

"Probably the heat." Darby agreed, sounding mournful. Summer was horrible. Pausing, she flicked her ears up, looking thoughtful. "Come to think of it, Cain hasn't been doing so good either. Yeah. It's probably the heat."

Ilusen
She smiled at the young boy standing behind the couch peeking over the top "Those two would probably be playing with you if they were feeling ok Cain" she said to him smiling. Then turning back to Darby she nodded "Nice to meet you too, I came down here to see if any of the other edens were feeling ok, and I guess they aren't..."

She paused again, thinking, but was interupted by Dylan rousing out of his nap "Hey dee, you feeling any better?" she didnt get much of a reply because Dylan was looking back at Cain who was standing behind the sofa, he grinned, flashing what was there of his pointy teeth. "I guess the little nap did him some good" She said to Darby "But he still isnt himself, i swear he would be running round here tearing the place apart usually."

Chinchillie
"Are you sure that's a bad thing?" Darby muttered, noting that yes, those definitely were teeth, and pointy ones too. "We could go around and interview people if they come in." she offered in a louder voice - the last comment wasn't very loud, just in case Ilusen took offense.

Cain flinched a little as Dylan grinned, but remained clinging to the couch. Oookay. He didn't want to get eaten. Glancing nervously at Darby and back, he finally waved a hand, ready to run if the other boy moved. "H'lo~"
