Oh, so the Zodiacs were co-ed. That made it less worse, but doing the math of names she didn't mention, it seemed like there were a considerable chunk of them at Crystal Academy itself. What were the odds of them all being able to afford it? Maybe they got special perks for being an exclusive team?
Bureaucracy. He hated it.
Raking a hand through his hair, Sailor Taranis pursed his lips. "Depends on who's on the team," he said dismissively. "A bad team will be no more successful than a lone senshi." He and Dani worked fine together, even though their attacks did sort of similar things. She bristled the first few times he attacked. His sand blast was much more offensive than her powder puff, and it was obvious from her body language that it rankled her. In time, she dealt with it by forcing him to get more proficient. It was win-win.
"I patrol with Sailor Magellan. Usually." Usually, but not tonight. She had a test in the morning and was fast asleep, probably with one leg draped over the side of her bed, mouth open. Dani had been up late studying. She probably just crashed. Thinking of Dani made him smile, but he let it fade and return to the situation. "You aren't patrolling with anyone now either. So teams can't be that crucial to you." He wasn't saying it to be argumentative, but it was a little argumentative. That was simply Taranis's way.

She nodded; thought it over, then shook her head. "It is not so much about success as it is about staying live," she said. "What does it matter if you are on a bad team? So long as you make it to the end of the day. You must never, ever, forget that we are all born with a star in our hearts to defend against the darkness." It had the tone of a rote, well-learned lesson. And it had been learned by rote, thousands and thousands of years ago.
"My brother knows a Sailor Magellan, I think." Virgo couldn't remember any other details, didn't seem to really want to, either. It annoyed her, sometimes, that he kept secrets from her. She barely ever kept secrets from her.
Her interested look turned to anger. "Nothing comes before the Zodiac," she snapped; "The Princess is everything. One of us is not so strong as all of us--I am more than enough for any youma I might meet--"

Sailor Taranis blinked. She hadn't understood his point, and like any good debater, he had no problem saying it again. "No, you misunderstood," he began, punctuating his points with his gloved hands. "What I am saying is that being on a team that does not work well together would be no more beneficial than patrolling by yourself. At least on your own you don't have to worry about other people getting in the way." His remarks were made without condescension in his tone, but the words themselves were a watered down version of the logic he was trying to impart (and therefore, a bit condescending). "If being on a team is so crucial, it simply surprises me that you patrol alone while you are telling me not to patrol alone. It's a hypocritical argument." Taranis shrugged.
There was a clear difference of opinion between Virgo and Taranis, a difference that went all the way down to the bone of their civilian identities. This was likely an issue they would never see eye-to-eye on, not that Taranis would accept that. He believed that anyone could be persuaded to see logic (read: his logic) about any situation.
The 'star in our hearts' bit was met with a blank stare. Taranis did not usually spout the warm and fuzzy, and that statement was practically a down stuffed animal. Derp had said something along those lines to him, he thought, but it was hard to remember in the grand scheme of things that Derp had chirruped at him.
Having gotten the logic correction out of the way, Sailor Taranis had a much more important question to ask. "Who is your brother? What does he look like? Is he a big guy?" No, Taranis wasn't jealous that his girlfriend may or may not be parading around with some super powered guy. No way, nope.

She stared at him, the expression flat and rather irritated. Didn't the stupid Lunar senshi understand she was just looking out for him? If she wanted him to die she would have just bolted after killing the youmacorn, or even just left him. "Sailor Taranis, when you have been a senshi for as long as I have been a senshi, you can patrol alone."
Also, she felt fairly sure she'd heard the 'you misunderstood' line before. Virgo gave him a look. "He's taller than you," she said, "and a lot nicer, too." (As if this would mean anything to Taranis.) She took a few steps back, cradling her wrist again. Her expression turned a little rebellious and she said, "Get home safe, Sailor Taranis," before turning and bolting through the trees.

Sailor Taranis frowned. How long had she been a senshi for? How could she assume that she had been a senshi longer than him? She didn't have all the facts, and neither did he. How was she drawing any kind of conclusion? "Well, how long have you been--" Virgo was already leaving, taking off through the trees.
One hand lingered in the air to call after her. He let it drop. Even when he was a peer on her level, she was still doused in the desire to protect him -- protect him like he was some kid. And she didn't even bother to tell him what Magellan's patrolling friend looked like. The nerve.
Taking out his cellphone, Sailor Taranis composed a text to Magellan asking if she knew a Virgo and her brother. Then he dashed out through the park, disappearing into the streets beyond.
