Noel beamed, making a quiet jingle when she was patted. While she released Liam's hand, the Chingling kept about an equal distance between the grunt and her trainer as she floated down the hall, following him.
"Well, for starters, I'd try to relax a bit," the agent said as he strolled along, heading for the elevators that would take them back down to the lower levels. He grinned, not unkindly. "Place isn't going to come down around your ears and looking scared's an invitation for hazing."
"Anyway," he continued, punching the 'Down' button, "neither have I. What do you think, Nikki? Cafeteria?" The blond looked over at his partner with a mild smile. Inside the elevator shaft, the car shifted and pulleys started to whir.

Moving into the elevator with her giant bird, Nikki stewed in her silence, continually glaring at Liam. And every time the trainee spoke, her frown and level of annoyance seemed to only intensify.
"I don't care." Was Nikki's short and curt reply to Hayes' question about the Cafeteria.
Darkfeather shifted his weight as the elevator started to move, shaking out his feathers in the process. One lone down feather was then seen floating through the air.

Liam tried his best to stifle his smile, but being invited to lunch by two Agents (even if it was part of their assignment) was a real honor to him. "Yes sir... and ma'am, Agents Hayes and Nikki!" he said with his best soldier voice, something he had been practicing in the mirror for days. "I-it would be an honor!"
Perhaps part of his excitement was that Hayes' Chingling seemed to like him, which was always a good sign. He had learned long ago that when people and Pokemon got along, it was easier to get along with trainers. This inspired him to look towards Darkfeather... which was a huge mistake. He seemed to want to tears Liam to shreds, and he would probably succeed in a small space like an elevator. Liam looked away, swallowed, and tried his best to calm down. If her Pidgeot was any indication, Liam was going to have a hard time getting Nikki to warm up to him...

Hayes seemed to take Nikki's cold reply in stride. "Okay," he half-laughed, stifling a grin at Liam's rigidly formal mannerisms as he turned to the control panel and pressed the button marked '1'. The car started to move.
"Oh, hold up."
The blond hit the button marked '3'. A moment later the elevator slowed, stopping at the floor just below the one they had been on. There was a 'ping' and the doors opened on a long hallway of dorm doors, intersected by other passages.
"I'm gonna grab something; meet you guys down there," Hayes explained. The agent looked over at his Pokemon as he stepped out. "Keep him out of trouble, No."
The Chingling stopped trying to clap her paws around the downy feather that kept eluding her grasp and saluted with a little 'dink' as the doors closed. "Ching-ling!"
That left Liam alone with Nikki, Darkfeather, and a very small Pokemon clinging to his hat.

Nikki's expression was appalled when Hayes announced that he was getting off to get something and would instead meet them at the cafeteria. He... as leaving her... with THIS guy?! ... Oh she would never forgive him for this.
The girl's eyes narrowed at him as he departed, and TRP's warning about getting along flew from her mind at that moment. She would kill him.
As the elevator doors shut again, Nikki quickly turned her murderous expression on Liam.

Don't go! Liam screamed, but it was only in his mind. He could only imagine something like that wouldn't help him get into Nikki's good graces in the least. At least Hayes was leaving Noel, who seemed to be a happy and nice Pokemon... and possibly a shield from Darkfeather's sharp beak...
He put on his best smile before turning to Nikki, and it was lost in an instant. Just for a second he realized his face with contorted in horror before he straightened it out.
"A-agent Nikki, ma'am!"
He swallowed as he lay one hand on Noel's cool body for comfort.

Noel bobbled slightly under Liam's hand but held fast to his cap as she looked at Nikki, who was about eye-level with her. Why did this girl always look so angry?
This seemed like it would need more than a hug to solve. Maybe that was why the angry girl kept that dark bird around - for really big hugs.
"Ching?"

Yes. Darkfeather was one big feathered teddy bear. ... Not.
With the elevator doors shut, the agent had to restrain herself from throttling the grunt right then and there. Instead her hands balled up into fists as she leered at Liam.
"You stutter one more damn time and I'll rip out your tongue and feed it to my Pidgeot!"

"Y-" he stopped, closed his mouth, and nodded. As if someone this threatening could manage to get him to stop stuttering when Team Rocket's very own certified psychologist couldn't...

"Good." Nikki said as the grunt just nodded. "If you don't have anything useful to say, then keep your mouth shut. You're better off."
Maybe there was some hope for this grunt after all.
Nikki smirked to herself as she turned away from Liam and waited for the elevator to arrive at its destination. Which it soon did. Once the doors opened again, Nikki hobbled out with Darkfeather behind her. Although the Pidgeot didn't waste an opportunity to pass Liam his own glare.

He nodded yet again before following Nikki out of the elevator. He patted the Chingling on the head with a smile, as if to say See, my tongue is still there! Still, Darkfeather seemed somewhat disappointed not to have an excuse to peck Liam's eyes out. It was a bittersweet idea...

"Chingliing.." Noel murmured. It was unclear whether she was trying to comfort Liam or herself. The little bell Pokemon dinged and bobbled all the way to the cafeteria, which was starting to fill up with dinner-goers. As per usual the smell of cooked food hinted at nothing except possibly MSG and the hope that enough seasoning, enthusiastically applied, would make up for a lack of skill.
Hayes was nowhere in sight.

Nikki heaved a sigh as she didn't see Hayes around, but she didn't really expect to just yet anyway.
Figuring that Liam would follow, she continued to hobbled towards the cafeteria with the Pidgeot following after her. Darkfeather still keeping a close watch on Liam, just in case.
Once at the cafeteria, she got herself in line to get her food. And once her tray was full, carried it with one hand while she used the other to support herself on the crutch. Eventually finding a seat.
Hayes had better get there soon.

While never one to say no to a nice Miltanburger and Oran berry shake now and then, Liam found himself unable to reach for his... 'delicious' meal. He had wanted to offer to help Nikki with her tray (he was still, after all, a born and bred gentleman and hated to see a lady in distress.) but the combination of stuttering and the fact that Nikki would probably bite his head off herself if he called her a 'lady,' stopped him.
"Looks... delicious," he said, deliberately spacing his words to best brace himself not to stutter. Nikki scared the hell out of him, but he was damned if he would give her a real reason to hate him, other than sheer spite.
He first offered a small piece of bread torn from his burger's bun to Noel, remembering that most Pokemon (well, Pokemon this small, at least) liked something un-meaty. Besides, she was just darned cute and he couldn't resist.
