Anagove Unphotographable Anagove I like how you think Anime is actual literature... gonk I don't read whatever this thread is about HOWEVER I know quite a few colleges on the east coast that are allowing people to take courses about graphic novels for literature credits. I even had to read a graphic novel biography about Ronald Reagan for one of my classes. Are you serious? Jeez, the world is going DOWN DOWN DOWNHILL. I wish I weren't even alive in this world ;____;
I don't really see what the big deal is... There's detailed analysis of not only text but of the art and it's placement and such. It's not like they're sitting around reading Inuyasha or something and talking about how much they dislike Kagome- these are college courses. If they WERE to read Inuyasha they'd probably have to write an analytical essay about Kagome's role in modern times vs. the past or something like that.
For the Ronald Reagan thing it was pretty simplistic, we needed to write an essay analyzing a key chapter, including both text and placement facts to prove our points. I had some friends who took a class that was based around The Watchmen and the essays they told me about sounded like horror stories. Basically they had to read the graphic novel, watch both of the movies, and read A LOT of essays about it/subjects relevant to it. And then tie it all together in crazy long essays.
As long as it's really done in an academic manner, I don't see what the problem with having a graphic novel litt course is.

literature as it's currently defined refers specifically to written-word work. you can consider anime/manga art, but it's not literature unless you stretch that definition. & if you're going to stretch the definition that far, you might as well include Twilight lol. from what i've seen, animoo is just as bad as telling a coherent story with not too many exceptions
& i'm all for considering comics & graphic novels as art. same with some video games. it would be blind & pretentious not to, considering how much both mediums have evolved. but you also have to realize that all three mediums are v. different & often have completely different goals & purposes
& @anagove, just sayin', but getting all upset because there are other accepted venues of expression is kind of lame rofl

I would never consider anime literature, as it's obviously a completely different media. However, graphic novels are both written AND illustrated, so I guess I would consider them a means of literature. Maybe not all of them in an academic way, but literature nonetheless.
BUT it really doesn't even what I think. I'll allow the Literature professors with their degrees decide what is and is not literature,

Unphotographable I'll allow the Literature professors with their degrees decide what is and is not literature, that's the worst possible route imo. the profession is steeped in pretension & bias & general douchebaggery. i can't think off the top of my head of a literary reviewer or critic i can take seriously. even my english teacher, whose original career path was professor-dom, went to the high school level because the community is just so laughable it's pretty easy to keep is simple. literature is work, usually art, involving written word. from there, what qualifies as "art" gets into subjective territory anyway
