One moment the youma was there -right there. She could feel it; small, but undeniably solid and disgustingly insect-like. It leaked ooze all over her father's suit, and Vanessa's head swam with the force of adrenaline that assaulted her body. The next moment somebody cried out in pain and the youma was gone.

For some reason it was difficult to breathe. Fallon pulled on her arms and Vanessa, who was disoriented in her fury and her terror, took great gasping breaths. Somewhere at the back of her head she registered that her leg hurt, but was too preoccupied with everything else to really acknowledge the pain.

Fallon shouted at her to run and Vanessa came back to herself a little, but she did not argue. Sweat glistened on her forehead and Vanessa, who stubbornly refused to be dragged any longer, used Fallon's arm to pull herself to her feet. Blood issued from the wound on her thigh, and a groan of protest tore from her throat as she put weight on her leg.

Vanessa bit her lip and tried to act like nothing was wrong.

The youma watched the girls flee, green eyes flaring with an unbridled animosity, and flopped after them the best that it could. It squawked with disdain, flapped its wings and managed to leave the ground, but was quickly dragged back down again by the weight of its injuries.

Pursuit was not an easy task, but it was being accomplished. One sick, awkward, desperate twitch at a time.

Super Van just managed to keep up with Fallon as she half-ran, half-limped onto the road. Several cars honked in protest, and one screeched to a halt. The front bumper came within inches of her knees and Vanessa, who hadn't yet returned from her wrathful high, slammed her hands down on the hood.

"I'M WALKING HERE."

The bandaged ribs beneath Fallon's dress pulsated with rushing blood. They hadn't broken again, but they had been beaten to hell and back. She worried that her stitches had ruptured, that something had gone terribly wrong and she might bleed out before the youma had a chance to kill her.

When Vanessa yanked back, Fallon murmured an annoyance, but it was swallowed up by a screech of the youma. Both girls staggered unsteadily toward the line of traffic. Fallon tried to move them toward the crosswalk (the rules of the road must be obeyed!), but Vanessa caught her off-balance, dragging them through the traffic.

Great. So now she would survive a youma attack, only to be killed by a car? "VANESSA. Cars. VANESSA." The short-haired girl slammed her hands on the hood, and Fallon shouted an apology over her shoulder. Once they cleared the other side of the road, they'd be fine, right? The youma would stop.

From the alley, a winged and bleeding youma buzzed into view. Its gut looked slit open, chunky black bits spilling on to the line of cars that it flew over. Fallon shouted, "Run! VANESSA, COME ON!" She tugged both of them into the next lane of traffic. The youma was so close, its claws outstretched, mouth foaming. It darted downward, sailing in a death spiral toward them.

Fallon screamed again, but it was drowned out by the echoing honk of a semi-truck fast approaching. The youma dove, and both girls did too, pushing against each other and throwing themselves on to the sidewalk just out of harm's way. The semi-truck collided with the flying youma, and it exploded into a flurry of dust, coating the massive silver grill.

On the sidewalk, Fallon was panting, chest and falling so fast she thought she might be hysterical. Tears had sprung to her eyes, both from pain and fear. Her arm was still wrapped around Vanessa, but she was too stunned to say anything.

The hazardous dodge-and-dance game Vanessa's stupid decision to drag the pair of them onto the busy road had imposed upon their injured bodies. Some cars whizzed by. The breaks of others squealed obnoxiously as drivers slowed down and swerved to miss the girls that had run for their lives into a new type of danger.

Fallon shouted something and Vanessa, who had not yet returned completely to herself and was still on the alert, whirled around just in time to see the youma as it zoomed closer. She gasped and looked around for her crowbar, but it was nowhere to be had. They'd forgotten it in the alley.

Dread sunk its icy claws into her soul.

She had nothing to defend herself with. Nothing with which to protect Fallon.

Super Van's golden eyes narrowed, vicious and hateful through her sunglasses, and she twisted over Fallon where they lay on the sidewalk. Her back was to the youma. Her body was the shield. She squeezed her eyes shut and hoped that it wouldn't hurt when it killed her.

Vanessa did not see the youma's fateful collision with the grate of the semi-truck, but when death did not come as instantly as she'd expected it to, she wondered. Her heart pounded like a jack hammer against her ribs.

"Where is it?"

Their hearts were slamming against one another like hammers trying to pound in the same nail. If it were not Vanessa, Fallon might have been a touch awkward about the closeness, the overtones of heated encounter. Instead, she gripped the girl's arm, not in fear but in dogged relief. It wasn't quite a hug, just a mutual collapse.

Fallon's breath was ragged. It took her several moments to respond to Vanessa. "Gone," she said. "Dead. The truck. The truck. Hit it." Some residual dust coated the street, but it was quickly dissolving. Fallon had only seen youma dust once before when Sailor Cancer killed one in front of her. It made sense that they disappeared like this, or else the streets of Destiny City would be littered with youma corpses.

Relief was a cooling balm, but Fallon was still mad. A few cars had pulled off to the side of the road. A taxi driver with a red face was shouting profanity at the two girls. Fallon ignored it. "That was so stupid, Vanessa," she said, sitting up. "Were you following me?" How else could she have been there at just the right time?

Vanessa was, and always had been, a physical sort of girl. She had never had any issues with displays of affection or appreciation, as long as she didn't have to talk about her feelings, and was not uncomfortable with their shared proximity. Plus, she was relatively certain that she about to be impaled from behind-

And then Fallon's fingers tightened around her arm. Golden eyes snapped open, visible behind the sunglasses that had slid down her nose, and searched the other girl's expression with zeal. Death had not come for her. Fallon no longer looked afraid.

No, there was relief in those magenta eyes.

Vanessa exhaled deeply. Her face exploded into a smile of uninhibited glee.

It was dead. They had done it. Well, in all fairness, the truck had done it- but Vanessa hadn't had much of a plan from the beginning of this whole escapade, so she figured this would suffice as a ******** fantastic ending to a job well done.

She moved with Fallon as she sat up, and collapsed onto her back beside the girl with cinnamon hair. Vanessa was satisfied; filled with pride, beyond ecstatic- Fallon's anger only tainted it a little. It would have been nice if the other girl could have enjoyed this moment too, but she wasn't going to let it ruin everything.

"Yes," Vanessa rolled her eyes, stung a little by the insult, and turned to look pointedly at Fallon, "I was following you. This time. I wasn't before- but, it sounded like you need protection pretty often."

"And guess what," she made an 'O' face and covered her mouth with her hand, "I was right!"

Never mind that Vanessa had probably caused more trouble than she'd stopped.

Fallon could not stop herself. She slapped Vanessa on the arm, eyes narrowing. "Stop it," she hissed, voice low and gravely. "We got very lucky tonight. We should be grateful to God, not proud." The sidewalk was cool under the rising moon. Fallon wanted to stand up, but her legs were still shaking. She wasn't certain they could take it.

Letting out a long sigh, Fallon rested her face in her hands. She wasn't crying; she was processing. If Vanessa hadn't stalked her, it was possible she never would have made it out of that alley. But at the same time, if Fallon were alone, she would have just run away -- and who was to say that wouldn't work? It had worked for her in the past. Either way, she could not let Vanessa believe for a second that what she had done had saved her life, otherwise Super Van would be out on the street to die another day.

Vanessa wasn't precisely Fallon's favorite kind of person, but that didn't mean she wished death on her. "I don't know what I have to do to convince you that you are on a suicide mission. Do you really want to die so much? There are much faster ways." Her face resurfaced from her hands, warped by a mix of relief and annoyance. Magenta eyes fell to the destroyed suit. Fallon pursed her lips.

"And that suit is hideous."

"Ow," Vanessa scowled at Fallon and, while she did not swing back, moved her arm out of the danger path. This was getting very old. Fallon was determined to get in the way, and Vanessa was quickly growing weary of the other girl's lack of faith. They'd gone over this before.

Neither of them had lowered their guns.

"I don't want to die," golden eyes flashed indignantly. Vanessa sat up, offended. She resisted the urge to grab Fallon by the shoulders and shake her by weaving her fingers into her own short hair. Her head was beginning to ache. "I want to HELP."

She was the sort of person that didn't appreciate being unappreciated. Frustrated and hurt, Vanessa was slowly beginning to fall from her heroic high. It occurred to her to just get up and leave, but Vanessa also didn't want Fallon to know that she'd been hurt. It would only add more fuel to the fire. The wound still bled, and Vanessa shifted so that it was out of view. It was a reasonably casual action, easily pulled off, but there was no denying the wince that marred her cheek as she moved.

"This," she plucked at the sleeve of Super Van's costume, "was my mother's. She was a dancer."

There was an airy quality to her voice. Vanessa was trying to keep the emotion out of it.

Fallon had a way of doing this to her.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:48 am

The wince did not escape Fallon's notice, but she didn't say anything. She was doing plenty of wincing of her own. "You could've fooled me," she quipped, brushing debris from her skirt. It would need to be dry cleaned immediately before any of the stains set. Her dry cleaning bill had risen substantially since her time at Barren Pines. She highly doubted that constant tailing by Super Van was going to do anything to change that.

Fallon shrugged her way out of reach of Vanessa, carefully getting to her feet. Her knees wobbled, but she caught herself on a nearby lamp post. "Vanessa, this has to stop." She shook her head. "I'm serious. You want to leave the people you love with your corpse? Then fine. Keep going." Vanessa already seemed upset, but as far as Fallon was concerned, it was a good thing. She needed to get upset, she needed to realize the gravity of the situation. Fallon failed to tie that airy voice with the mention of a mother who was -- past tense.

It was hard to say if Fallon hated Vanessa, or if she was merely frustrated by her. There was a stupid nobility in her actions, and perhaps, like Fallon, she often felt compelled to do things that she knew could harm her. Fallon had OCD; Vanessa had ADD? Who could say.

Fallon lifted her eyes to the hotel across the street. "Go home and stay there, Vanessa. We got lucky tonight." Emotion pinched in Fallon's throat. She was tired of these near death experiences, she was tired of being weak and helpless, she was tired of wondering if every day was the last she'd have alive. Why couldn't Vanessa be so cautious?

Wordlessly, Fallon started to walk away, clutching her arms across her aching ribs.

It was hard to believe she hadn't known Fallon for more than a couple of weeks. It was even sadder to think they'd caused each other almost nothing other than pain and frustration. Vanessa had helped Fallon in Big Willy's, and they had undoubtedly saved one another's lives tonight, but there was still a rift- a gap that their mutual differences kept them from closing. Just moments ago they'd held (and, at the same time not held) each other on the sidewalk. Their hearts had beat in unison.

Now they were worlds apart. Again.

Fallon got up to leave and Vanessa, who had no intention of stopping her, simply sat there. She watched Fallon, golden eyes flickering over the way the other girl held herself, and sighed heavily. That hadn't been a part of the plan.

When you were Vanessa, nothing ever turned out right.

She waited until Fallon was out of ear shot, and then got up and followed her. It was slow going- her leg throbbed like a b***h and Vanessa had to stop every now and then to ease the pain, but she managed nonetheless. She tip-toed after Fallon, lurking behind parked cars and trashcans, until the other girl was safely inside the hotel.

Then she returned to the alley, collected her crowbar, and started on the walk home. It wasn't very late yet. Mr. Rae would still be at work, and John Jr could help her get cleaned up before their father got home.

A slow grin started on her face at the thought of what John Jr would say when she told him this story.
