Anime/manga was my spark for learning Japanese. Then as time went by, my motivation for learning Japanese changed. While I still enjoy anime and manga, it is not my primary motivation for learning Japanese anymore (it's been pushed to the very back of my mind). I think my motivation now comes from my wonderful Japanese professors, who have taught many things about their culture. Not to mention, I was fascinated with what I learned in my Japanese culture class (I think I'm the only one in that class who actually enjoyed reading the required textbook. A lot of people hated it because it was too long and boring and they didn't want to read 30-60 pages a week). Also, my other motivation is that I love learning languages, East Asian languages especially. Another motivation is J-dramas.

Byouki I'm a sucker for the language itself. I really love the simplicity of -masu conjugating; being Canadian, my country killed most of my interest of French by teaching me the same vocab up until high school.. with no real info on conjugating/grammar until grade 8; it was too late for me by then. I was used to months, days, holidays, body parts, and various little snippets. I liked making codes in high school. When I found out that they offered Japanese in my school, I took it as a chance to "decode" a language. I like the look of Japanese, and the sound. Admittedly, I've liked rather little of the food I've tried. I'm not much interested in the culture. I fear the idea of visiting a big city. I'm really learning Japanese to read books (manga/etc) and watch anime. Granted.. it doesn't seem like the same stuff other people are in to. TV: I like boy's stuff, aside from 1 Litre no Namida. I'm a sucker for Berserk, Lain, Ergo Proxy, and Kino. I have a feeling I will like NHK and Baccano. Maybe even Cowboy Bebop, if I watch it this time without being heavily medicated. As for books.. I'm not one for magazines. I DO have one; it's a fashion thing.. and I'm rather puzzled by the amount of French it has in it. Is this a Goth thing? I got this one for free. I have 5-6 little novels (and yes, I have myself a copy of 1 Litre)... I haven't really started to grasp the grammar as well until recently; my Jap class was in 2005, and we barely touched on grammar. I ended up getting a skookum textbook (Youkoso), so, I'm limping my way around journal entries. I still do all of my workup in roumaji. I do little kanji by hand (and demonstrated my book stroke-skills in a recent letter to a friend)... My ultimate goal for this year is to work on a translation of 1 Litre; I'm ultimately dissatisfied by the online ones I've found -- incomplete, or riddled with translator's personal life stuff. (My reasoning is that Kitou was 23 when she died.. and left school early.. how complicated can her stuff be?) So: summary. I like the language.. mostly the formal side, because conjugation is seemingly simple and clean. Downside: slang. Dear lawd, the slang. I will be the only gaijin using all my pretty -masu on people who seem to have ditched it altogether. At least my penpals' grandparents will understand me... Whoo, another 1 Litre of Tears fan! heart

It's because my grandma was put into a POW camp here (In Canada, so it's not that bad), but that caused her to lose her language and a lot of her culture and I always find it sad that she still can't remember! So from a young age I've wanted to learn it so I can regain some of what my familly had I guess. I really like the language, and the culture and history has always interested my (Although I HATE manga and anime. I can't stand the stuff, it's not fun to watch/read, it's just stupid in my mind!)...so in grade 10 we had the choice between Japanese French and Spanish if wwe wanted a second language and I chose nihongo!!! smile

You had the choice of Japanese in grade 10! Which part of Canada are you from? I'm also Canadian but we could only choose between Spanish or nothing. neutral
As for me, I guess it also started with anime, then manga, then j-dramas. But what all those things had in common was beautiful theme songs. I love singing, so I pay extra attention to lyrics and I guess that got me looking into the language. 日本語、万歳! surprised

I think it's admirable to want to learn more about your traditions... It reminds me of something I was reading recently about the surge in interest in African heritage in the US once international communication became good enough for African Americans (and descendants of slaves) to access more information about their ancestors.

I've been watching anime since I'm old enough to remember (Doraemon! xd ) , all anime that I've watched when I was a kid was dubbed, but the the opening songs and ending songs wasn't. My older sister used to tell me that I used to sing along to those songs and that I used to ask her why I couldn't understand it. She told me that it was in different language, she also told me that I told her that I want to speak like Doraemon. xd Back then I couldn't understand what a language was, so she bought me this book with some basic Japanese vocabulary. I think that's what made me gain interest on the language. Then a few months ago, I decided to self-study Japanese and that about it. Here a pic of Doraemon if you don't know him : Doraemon

Japanese is so beautiful. I think it's flow and difficulty is rather smooth compared to other East Asian languages. Not trying to say it's BETTER than them, I just find it simpler in both writing and speaking~
Did I mention it's beautiful?

I suppose my interest in the Japanese language began with anime. When I first began watching it, I noticed certain peculiarities very reflective of Japan that made me more curious about it. There is a certain beauty about some of the Japanese anime I've seen. Not just the art style, but the stories as well. When I realized this, I thought I might enjoy learning the language. After the first few months of studying it, I began to enjoy it more and more. I think Japanese is a beautiful language.
I do like manga and some video games also. I always enjoy learning more about Japanese culture. I would like to visit Japan someday. Japanese food is delicious.
They also have the coolest game shows I have ever seen.

I have to say the culture is what got me motivated to want to learn, second would have to be manga, and third would be that I wanna learn different languages from different countries, Japanese being at the top of the list.
