Vanessa wasn't sure what it meant to be quaint, but Howl was being very nice and he kept laughing at her, so she was sure that she didn't mind the label. She had not made any jokes on purpose, but the nature of his laughter was jovial and contagious and she assumed simply that he was laughing with her, instead of at her. It did not occur to her to think Howl rude.
"Mostly I drink milk," she informed him with a shrug and, because she was rather familiar with that as a beverage, she elaborated, "Cow's milk. I tried goat's milk once, but it wasn't for me."
This time, she consciously neglected to mention her grandfather's farm. It was an achievement and a half.
"I also drink a lot of apple juice, so I like that, and tropical tasting things. Citrus flavours." She smiled at him and followed his gaze, also looking for a waitress, and then shook her head. "Nothing bitter."
"I'd like to thank you, for this. It is nice of you to buy me tea."

"Milk?"
It was rare to hear a teenager these days say the drank milk. What, with all those energy drinks and sodas they could have, it really was a rarity to hear something so simple. Howl, of course, could not stand the sodas and the energy drinks. They were much too strong for him and his delicate stomach.
"Well, the saying is that 'milk does a body good,' so you are probably benefiting your body by drinking mostly milk." The mention of cow's versus goat's milk seemed to go ignored, since it really wasn't very dire to the conversation. It was a meaningless detail meant to liven up their exchange of words. Dwelling on it too long would be rather silly.
As she explained the flavors she enjoyed, he nodded his head thoughtfully, and with a hand, he waved down the pretty little waitress. She was a young thing, all blond curls with dimpled round cheeks. Cute, but she seemed a bit simple. "What can I get ya, hon?"
The teal-haired lad smiled, placing all his attention on the newcomer. "If I may, I would like to get a cup of Earl Grey. My companion would like the Strawberry Lemonade Herbal Tea." He paused, then added very politely "I thank you for your assistance, Miss Stephanie." Apparently Howl had noted the name badge pinned onto the girl's apron.
The girl finished jotting down the order, then offered a simple "No problem, hon!" She giggled before spinning around to go drop off the order and take care of any other tasks she needed to before returning.
With the waitress gone, his attention was back upon his current company. "It would be rather silly for you to thank me for thanking you, Miss Van." He could have laughed at this moment, but he seemed to think better of it before offering a humble "You are very welcome though, Miss Van."

Milk definitely did do a body good. Vanessa had wiped out hundreds of times on her skateboard, had fallen out of some trees, and been in her fair share of scraps and never broken so much as a nail. This was probably because she chewed them and they weren't long enough to break, but the point was that they didn't. And neither had her nose, or her arm, or her foot. She was naturally skinny; tall and slender, but her bones were thick and strong- it was probably an autonomous decision her body had made in order to protect itself from her.
She smiled at the waitress as she addressed them and, at the same time Howl started making his order, informed her that she would like; "A cup of tea, pl-
Then she stopped, politely allowing Howl to speak, and laughed out an apology for interrupting, "My bad, my bad, I- wait, you don't have to order for me."
It made more sense for him to do the ordering. Howl actually knew what he was talking about, but Vanessa liked being independent. He was paying for her, but it that didn't mean he could take away any decisions that she might have made. Still, he was being very nice, and her tone was not as angry as it was confused.
The waitress was already gone. Super Van watched her go, and then turned back to Howl with an expectant expression on her face, although even she didn't know what she wanted to hear from him in that moment.

A stray lock of teal hair managed to find its way in Howl's line of sight while ordering, and now he needed to rectify this problem. With one single elegant motion, he managed to tuck the lock back and slip his hand back to its partner, knitting the fingers together.
Where as the girl seemed to find a hitch in the conversation, the effeminate lad did not hesitate to push forward, offering a new subject since the young lady seemed a bit stuck. "Might I ask how long you have been a Super Hero, Miss Van? Is it a recent endeavor, or more of a casual hobby you have maintained for a while?"
In all honesty, this entire encounter had proven rather entertaining, despite the fact he had to lose a pants leg. After all, Super Van was supplying Howl a new puzzle to work at. How to identify a super hero without being overly evident. He was no super villain, but he was growing increasingly interested at the possibilities of this scenario.

Howl pushed forward, but Vanessa refused to budge. She was adamant about her right to make her own decisions, and did not like having them taken away from her. This teal-haired boy confused her with all his propriety and big words. Vanessa felt a little like he'd pulled the carpet out from under her feet, and she wasn't sure what to think about that. She opened her mouth to protest again, and was promptly cut off by his question.
"I-uh- not very long," she offered, all the while wondering why he couldn't talk like a normal human being, and shrugged, "I've been getting in a lot of practice, though. I work very hard at it."
There was a sincere quality to her voice. It should have been very clear that Super Van was passionate about the path she'd chosen.
She paused, considered Howl with her head tilted to the side, and then leaned forward. "Do you always order for people?"
Maybe it was something he did.

Ah, so she was new to the world of superheroing. It would explain why she came across as green to all the bare basic rules of keeping a secret identity. Even her confession as to how long she had been maintaining this hobby was something a professional would have never confessed to. That was, if there was such thing as a professional superhero.
He nodded at her response to his question, and then remained thoughtfully attentive as she asked her own. Her emphasis upon the word always was a hint that she did not approve of his previous action. His fingers unfolded to allow one hand to cover his mouth as he let out a couple chuckles.
"I beg your pardon. I always forget that things are so different out here in America." With his accent, the statement was believable, even though it was not entirely true. He had lived in America for long enough to know the basic American stances on manners, but they were nothing like those in England.
His fingers pulled away from his mouth again and an apologetic smile was there upon his lips. "Unfortunately, I cannot blame it on ordering for other people, so to speak. However, my parents raised me to order in a restaurant or cafe setting for any lady companions that might be keeping me company." There was a pause as his fingers once more folded again.
"Especially when I am the one paying, Miss Van." He nodded his head to accent the point.

Howl did not call attention to her folly and Vanessa was, thus, once again unaware of the way her open personality continued to jeopardize the safety of her civilian identity. Super Van knew it was important that her true self be kept a secret, but she was having a hell of a time figuring out what was 'okay' to reveal about herself and what was better left unsaid. She was a self-proclaimed chatterbox. For Vanessa, keeping mum was unnatural.
"Oh, I understand!" A relieved smile lit up her face, and Vanessa reached across the table in order to give Howl what was clearly meant to be a consoling pat on the arm. This made it very easy to forgive him. Vanessa knew all about parents. She had one, after all. Clearly this made her an expert on the subject.
"I was raised to always look both ways before I cross the street, and to never talk to strangers- but I'm pretty good at talking to people I don't know, so I do that sometimes. My dad used to give me a lot of s**t for it, but I tell him I can handle myself." She sounded very confident, and pointed at herself with a thumb, as thought it would further prove her the quality of her ambitious (and questionable) claim.

One thing became pretty obvious. Howl was not a fan of profanity. The moment the word "sh*t" escaped from Super Van's lips, he noticeably winced at the word. He was not going to correct her, or mention that it was very rude to speak like such in front of a practical stranger, but given what she was actually saying at the moment, it would have simply been ironic and distracted from the conversation.
"Well, young children are taught the lesson about strangers so that they understand that you cannot trust simply any adult. Children can be rather naive creatures, so it is probably a rather necessary thing to teach."
He paused before adding in another two cents worth of his own opinion. "However, at the same time, when we grow older, this rule certainly diminishes. As teenagers and young adults, we know we cannot trust simply anybody. And, let us face it, everyone is a stranger at one point in time or another. Perhaps with the exception of our immediate family. If we were to never talk to strangers, then I suspect you would have never stopped to rescue me from that dog. Nor would I be here in your company."
It was about this time that curly-haired waitress returned, two tea cups balanced on a tray. She set down one cup in front of the strangely dressed girl, announcing "Strawberry Lemonade Herbal Tea" to make certain she got the order right, then turned to Howl and set the other cup down. "And an Earl Grey. Is there anythin' else I can get you, hon?"
Howl shook his head from side to side, but then gestured to his companion across the table. "I am fine, Miss Stephanie, but I did not know if my acquaintance was interested in any of the cakes or biscuits." This was obviously an invitation for Super Van to speak up if she wanted any sort of snack to go with her tea.

"You got that right," Vanessa informed Howl with an agreeable nod of her head, even though she wasn't sure she understood everything that he had said. It didn't matter. She could guess. "I was really naive when I was little, but I know a lot better now."
This was certainly debatable, and probably not very true. One of her primary confidantes was a lonely, occasionally drunken, hobo who lurked outside Big Willy's Record Store. Vanessa also often paid him to buy her fireworks.
She continued; "I don't trust just any old body- I wouldn't be a super hero if I did. Right? There are a lot of bad guys out there. Mostly, I like people, though. Especially if they're nice."
Especially if they didn't make her feel stupid.
Vanessa smiled up at the waitress as she returned with their tea and, attempting to handle the cup as daintily as possible, shook her head. "This is wonderful, thanks. I don't need cake- I just had some pizza."

"Alright hon, jus' let me know if ya want anything!" With that, Stephanie left the pair to go tend to other tables.
Howl, as polite as he was, had waited for the waitress to leave before daring to pick up his own teacup. Where as the rookie super hero had to work very hard to maintain an elegant manner with her cup, the lad made it seem almost effortless. Of course, the tea itself was still too warm, so when he lifted the cup up to his lips, instead of taking a sip, he merely blew over the surface of his Earl Grey, causing faint ripples to flutter across the liquid.
"Dare I ask if I am what you would consider trustworthy?" He blew once more over his beverage before setting it down just as daintily and effortlessly as before.

"Well, you don't seem like a bad guy," Vanessa had considered his question as carefully as she could, which wasn't very much at all. She liked to give prompt answers, and thinking had never been her forte. "I mean, how many bad guys do you know that care about their pants being ripped? How many bad guys do you know that would buy somebody like me tea?"
It was very plain that Super Van had some kind of preconceived idea concerning the nature of enemies that she had never met. Bad guys were evil geniuses with big, burly henchmen in black suits. Bad guys were mean and nasty men and women who spoke in ways specifically designed to confuse the hero.
Howl was-
Well, Howl did use a lot of big words that went over her head, and he practiced a strange sort of formality that she had never seen in a boy his age before.
Maybe he was a bad guy.
This train of thought was difficult to digest. It made her eye twitch, invisible behind her sunglasses. Super Van sucked in a thoughtful breath and took a big swig of her tea. The water was not hot enough to leave any permanent damage, but it temporarily scalded the insides of her mouth. Cheeks stung. Tongue and throat burned. She gasped and spluttered, hastily returned her cup to the table, and frantically waved her hand in front of her mouth- as though this would soothe the pain.
"I burnt my tongfe. I burnt my tongfe."

"I honestly cannot say I know any bad guys or villains personally, so I suspect I cannot assess whether a bad guy would find displeasure in a ripped pants leg or the likelihood that the bad guy would purchase the heroine any sort of beverage."
Of course, a lot of the meaning to his reply probably went ignored, for within seconds the girl looked almost as if she was choking in a sense. She obviously wasn't, but her expression did seem to betray her, letting Howl easily assess the situation before she started to practically holler out her ailment.
"Oh dear, I am terribly sorry, Miss Van." His voice was genuine and concerned, even empathetic. He had burned his tongue on many occasions prior, and he knew that it always had that lasting effect of making your food taste slightly different since burnt taste buds didn't function like regular taste buds. There really was no way to fix that particular problem, but perhaps a temporary solution would assist in easing her pain.
"Would you like me to get you some ice, Miss Van?"

Any doubts Vanessa might have had about Howl being a good guy vanished the moment he apologized for her discomfort. It was not his fault that she had burnt herself so. Vanessa knew this because her poor tongue was accustomed to this kind of brutal assault. Like every child with a propensity for accidental self-mutilation, Vanessa had been taught that it was good to wait and let a hot drink cool down. She just forgot sometimes.
"Oh, no, don't worry about me," Super Van shook her head dutifully, and continued to wave her hand over her tongue, "I can handle it."
It was very nice of him to offer, but super heroes didn't need ice. It was important that she maintained her image!
Already, the pain was beginning to fade. She flashed a sheepish smile across the table at Howl, embarrassed that she had made such a juvenile mistake, "I do that a lot. I-uh-I like it hot."
This was very obviously a lie, and came just short of telling him that she'd burnt herself on purpose. Which probably sounded a little crazy, but Vanessa was desperately trying to salvage her pride. Super Van shouldn't have been able to feel pain.

"I can sympathize, Miss Van."
Howl's tea still remained untouched, and even now, he merely glanced to it, as if to get his point across.
"I personally prefer my tea hot rather than iced, but I cannot handle drinking it when it is too warm. Warm tea has the better flavor, since iced tea waters down the flavor itself. Yet most places make the tea too warm, so I end up needing to wait at least a good 10 or so minutes usually."
That being said, it had probably been about 4 minutes only.
With a slight nod in her direction, he commented "To err is to be human, am I not correct?" It was obvious she was no super-powered being like the Sailor Scouts.

Vanessa was proud of who she was, and glad that she was human. Bad guys were usually something inhuman. It was better to be the way that she was.
But it would have been pretty cool if she could shoot spider webs out of her wrists-
or lift cars over her head-
or shoot laser beams out of her eyes.
The latter option was a particular fantasy of hers, if only because she could say things like; 'Pew pew pew,' and mimic machine gun noises and have it look ******** are correct," she said with an agreeable nod of her head. Actually, Vanessa hadn't the slightest clue what Howl had just said, but it sounded like he was probably right. Everything about Howl screamed 'I know what I am talking about.' He reminded her of all her teachers.
She did not pick up her tea again. It was better to let it cool off.
