Keely watched Nota and though he did not know it, she did see the tear before he hid it away. I hope I can help him as much as he will be helping me... When he asked if the cave was where they should start, she hesitated. I hope this will be the right place to go... I don't want to waste his time...

"I do think we should start there... At least I hope so. It's the direction that mommy must have gone when we were separated. And maybe she would have seen it as a kind of hiding spot. I know I would have. I don't know if she'd still be there now, it's been almost two moons since." Only then did she remember all the stories that her family told her about the cave. Supposed monsters and evil things. Her eyes widened, her heart pounding. "She could be in danger! Or could have been! What if she..." Keely trailed off, not wanting to think about the alternative. For the first time since the attack, she was afraid. If she had lost her mother without even having been able to give her a proper good-bye, she didn't know how she could cope... Oh, mommy, please don't let it be too late...

"I'm sorry, mister Nota, but I think we should leave soon. If the stories I've heard about that cave are true... Well, we should just hurry. But it's kind of up to you, because you're part of this whole adventure too..."

The thought of running full speed toward the unknown caused Nota to rear up excitedly. "What are we waiting for? Let us get a move on." He smiled towards her, hoping that when they got there she would be able to find her mother. When he legs touched down on the ground, he looked at Keely, and sincerely said, "We'll find her Miss Keely. One way or another, we will find her." Father, I will find you. I will end your being and your wrath on the world. You will not escape me.

The panic radiating off of her sent his nerves in a frenzy. As troublesome as this was for him, he could not stand the thought of her being upset, he had met his first friend. At least that's what he thought of her as, or a kind of friend anyway. "Anything that comes about inside of the cave, I will take care of it. Miss Keely, you have my word that I will protect you." Nota bowed gracefully and nodded his head toward the ground. And I will become stronger. This will be easy.

Keely was surprised to see his sudden change in mood. He seemed happy, excited. She was happy that she had somehow caused that smile he aimed at her, even as her worry overwhelmed her. His vow to protect her covered her like a warm blanket and she felt the weight of fear lift slightly and she nodded her head. "Okay, let's go!"

I'll find you mommy, and pray that it isn't too late. And even if (god forbid) it is too late, I have made a new friend and he will help me and protect me. She started walking down the river toward the mountains, and saw that the sun had almost completely disappeared behind them, leaving the sky a bruised purple, and she saw a small pinprick of light above the horizon. The first star! Make a wish, Keely... I wish I find my mommy, and become stronger and go on adventures with Nota.

She looked behind her at Nota. "Well, what are you waiting for? You were the one so excited to come." She smiled at him, her eyes glittering with a kind of excitement, hoping to convey to him that she wasn't as scared now.

Nota smiled at her change of mood, she seemed at ease. This was good news for them because now she would be more optimistic. His gaze followed hers up to the sky and the purple clouds of darkness descended upon them. We have to hurry. We still have a day and half's run ahead of us. Nota reared up as Keely asked what was taking him. His muscles in his back legs stretched as his body bounded forwards. Each stride was pounding to his legs and even though he was only a small colt, his strides were long. His little mohawk of a mane trailed behind him, the wind ripping through it. His tail billowing as his gallop became faster. He was now running. He closed his eyes and the thoughts of his mother overtook him for a moment. All of this makes me wonder if you're still alive Mother. If you are, I hope that all is well and that you are safe. I would rather not know the truth and do not detest me for that.

Nota looked back at Keely and yelled, "Come on slow poke." He stuck his tongue out at her. He was being a child again, the young one that he was never able to be with his father around. Nota did not know how long he would be able to keep this up for, the beatings from his father caused his lung capacity to shrink a bit and the shortness of breath came a lot faster than would on a normal horse his age. His heart began racing and his breaths ran more ragged, I will not allow this to stop me. Father, you have hurt me for the last time. Nota concentrated on his heart rate and tried to slow it down as he was running about half of his full speed now. He would not allow this to slow him down in the least bit. He winced with the pain that his lungs were screaming to him. No. I can do this.

Keely laughed at his remark and galloped after him. Her strides were not as long as his, but she was quick and agile, so she caught up to him in no time. Her hooves digging into the loamy earth beneath her and the feeling of cool air whipping through her mane made her almost giddy.

She laughed again, knowing that she was probably freaking Nota out but she didn't care. This is the most free she had ever felt in her life. She was finally doing something about her missing mother, she was finally moving forward. Oh, what everyone else would think. They wouldn't believe that I was going off on my own, they wouldn't believe I was going on a real adventure. Well, I'll show them. I'll bring back Mommy and she'll tell them what happened. They'll have to believe, and then they'll actually like me.

She was surprised at that particular train of thought, but as she ran she just felt lighter and lighter, more defiant. Then she noticed Nota's face was tense, like he was straining to keep up the pace. "Don't wear yourself out too quick, Mister Nota, you have to pace yourself." She had always been a kind of active and rambunctious filly, so this kind of pace was easy for her to keep, but she wondered how much Nota could take. She didn't want to be the cause of him hurting himself or something of the like.

'You have to pace yourself,' she said to him. Nota body heaved into a halt and his hooves dug into the ground as he skid slightly forward. He stood motionless, memories flooding within him like his blood pulsed through his veins. His father once said that to him, he was sure that Keely did not mean to say it and he was sure that she did not mean for the words to sting like they did. Nota was not even sure himself why they stung so bad. His breath was short and his lungs struggled to keep up with him. Even though he was at a stand-still it felt as though he was still running. He felt bad for Keely though, here he tried to help her and he wanted to so badly help himself but his father hurt him so bad that Nota just could not keep up any longer. His thoughts ran rampant in his mind and he wondered if he should open up to Keely, maybe it would stop the pain. This is troublesome. How annoying.

He began trotting forward, something he was able to do without his lungs attacking him furiously. I should tell her what happened to me. She might understand why I cannot keep up. He felt envy towards her in a way; her bubbly attitude, her being able to run without hesitation, and more importantly, her ability to be free. He decided that he was going to tell her, he was going to tell her everything. At this point, Nota just needs to get it off of his chest and maybe he will be free once he does. He'll never know unless he tries.

When Nota suddenly stopped, Keely got worried. Is there something more to his not being able to keep up such a quick pace? I hope he's okay She stopped with him, not saying anything, just letting him catch his breath. Then he started up a trot and she started with him, keeping the same speed as him right at his side. "Maybe starting out like that wasn't such a good idea, huh? Not alot of people are as active as me, I can usually keep up a good pace." She remembered running around her village chasing all sorts of wildlife. The butterflies in the spring and summer, the rabbits nibbling on the flowers around them. She never caught them, but it was the chase that gave her that exhilarating feeling of freedom. She looked sideways over at Nota, noticed him still panting and wheezing. "Uhm, don't take this in a bad way, Mister Nota, but are you okay?" She braced for a quick, short reply, but she saw him thinking. There is more to it! She waited in silence until he told her his story.

Nota looked towards the ground as they continued forward, "Miss Keely, I told you of what my father did to me. I feel as though I should get more in depth with that. You see, several months ago, I was able to sprint and run as fast as the wind could carry me." He sighed heavily, "Miss Keely my father, when he hurt me. He, well, he hurt me a lot more than just on the outside. He hurt my insides too." His chest began to heave, not with physical pain, but he was choking back the tears his father forced him not to cry all those months ago.

"To answer your question, Miss Keely, no I am not ok, My father kicked me and rammed into me until I was barely able to breathe. After that day, I was not able to run and breathe normally. He messed me up pretty bad," Nota forced a smile, "What does not kill you, however, makes you stronger. And I have started trying to control the pains from breathing. I suppose I was overwhelmed with excitement when we began our journey that I forgot all about the pain that comes from it. I am sorry that I have to slow us down like this but I assume it'll be a few more days if not longer before I am finally healed."

Nota sighed heavily, This is so troublesome, I wish I did not have to do it. But she needs to know if we are to work together as a team. It hurt him, more than anything, to remember that day. Nota's entire aura switched gears and here he was, finally being the sad little colt that his father would not allow. "Miss Keely, I made you a promise, and I intend to keep it. I will fix this and get stronger, I will help you find your mother. Miss Keely, I do promise that."

Keely stared at the ground as well, listening to his story. "That's horrible..." she said, mostly to herself. He's in so much pain. I wish there were something I could do to help him... "It's okay, Mister Nota. I don't care if it takes days to get to that cave, your health is more important right now." She looked at him and smiled, eyes filled now with kindness. "And I don't know how, but I promise to help you too, in any way I can. I hope that this adventure with give you peace and help you get stronger." She meant every word, and hoped he knew that she cared about his well-being. He shared a piece of his past with me, his darkest moments... Maybe I should tell him about what happened at my village...
"Mister Nota, I should tell you why we're on this journey anyway. I mean, apart from just 'my mom is missing'." She took a deep breath, and looked out at the now-dark horizon. "I mentioned before that we were attacked about 2 moons ago. it was just a normal day, we were all at the lake taking our drinks, talking, laughing. Then this black stallion just appeared out of nowhere." She glanced at him Maybe he would know who the stranger was...? "He was big, black, and scary. Blue eyes and white mane and tail, and he had these white designs on his torso that just seemed to radiate evil. He attacked our leader, Toumoku. I still cannot fathom why anyone would want to kill Toumoku, but he did. Then more stallions appeared, and we all ran. There was this old willow tree that Mommy and I used to go to to relax and daydream and look at all the different leaves and wildlife around us. She was at my right side, and by the time I had gotten to the willow, she was gone. I said maybe we should start at the cave, because that's the only place I can think of in that direction where she could have gone..." She stopped there. Her story was over, but her throat was tight as well. She looked away. Don't let him see you cry, Keely. You can be strong just like him.
