I have minimal survival knowledge... probably slightly more than the average person, but not much. Less than my friends who were in cub scouts. razz

As for communism, I love the idea of "pure communism," but a friend of mine raised an important issue: if there is no government, and it is democratic, who will enforce the democratic decisions? Say the majority of people vote for banning cocaine from the town. What is anyone going to do if there are still cocaine dealers running about? Without government, there is absolutely NO WAY to enforce democratic decisions, because as soon as you enforce them, you have created government.

At this rate, might as well make a list of edible plants for survival.
Found a way to test if a plant is edible!

Cool. Nice link.

I would consider myself a survivalist as well. I think that learning how to survive on your own is a skill most people should learn.

I personally started with a hunting knife.. you wouldn't believe how essential a durable knife is to survival. Learn about the uses of a knife, and you've already gained a large amount of survival knowledge.

Give me a knife, a tarp, and a bag of potatoes... I'll be fine.

Heck, Throw me into the Adirondack Mountains and I'll be living in my own paradise.

I agree. It's also beneficial to know how to improvise an edged tool when you don't have a knife. That's really a situation you don't want to find yourself in though.

my one question

is if you go "off grid"

what will you do if you become a libility and a threat to those "on grid" how do you suppose to avoid "offgrid" hunters if and when they start coming for those like yourselves?

since you can minimize the danger from nature herself

but can you purposely evade hunters actively looking for you with technology question

Well, there are two kinds of food that are readily available that can literally last thousands of years. This would be honey, and alcohol. It's becuase they are already processed sugars- what can you break it down into? You need to impose an extreme amount of heat or energy to dissolve the bonds of honey and alcohol, and if they sit in room temperature, or even hotter than that, in a dark space (as sunlight is the major deterrent, as they are organic materials) then it can literally last hundreds of years. As a matter of fact, alcohol supposedly gets better after the years.

Alcohol is an awesome resource, becuase a little bit added to water will kill all the bacteria, and allow the water to last for a LONG time. It's a combination called grog, which was originally designed on things like Pirate Ships so they could stay at sea with fresh water for long periods of times. Also, it's relatively easy to make alcohol, and you can make it out of almost any fruit, vegetable, starch, or pretty much any organic sugar.

Grapes = Wine
Hops = Beer
Molasses (sugar) = Rum
Potatoes = Vodka
Brandy = Super distilled Wine (40-60% alcohol)
Tequila = Agavo plant

If your smart you can also produce ethanol and various other types of alcohol, for fuel and for wounds so they won't get infected.

The things I want to get to know are what kind of plants are edible. Becuase I don't really know alot about plants, and seemingly every day plants seem to hold either extremely toxic poisons or are super sugary calorie packed items. :/

Wear and/or make extremely thick heeled boots. Then, place pungi spikes, small traps, and various nooses all around. Pungi spikes are basically sharpened sticks- you can coat them in raw meat, fungi, or excrement to make them give various infections to people as well. Make it so that you can run through a given area without stepping on any, but so that a normal person can't- and make sure to memorize were the major batches are, so that you won't have to worry about it OR so that you can set up ambushes.

You can also set up trip wires that drop things like logs and giant mudballs with pungi sticks and whatnot. If you memorize where you trip wires are, again you can cause people to be caught in an ambush.

If you were to live in a forest type area, a good place to hide, then you could lead people into the middle of the/a thick forest, and when they people get sticks stuck in their feet and whatnot you can run off and they'll be unable to get out the forest. Walking a mile is hard enough for the average person in and of itself, but covering a mile in something like a jungle or a forest is relatively difficult. Also, if you lead them down a hill, it will not only increase the chance of them getting stuck in traps and whatnot, but make it harder for them to get out, keeping them stuck in an area until they die. Or, until you can return later for easy pickings.

It would be smart to keep some weapons with you, though. A bow and arrow, a crossbow for starters. But possibly a gun, definitely knives, and maybe even a BB gun- you can pump it, so you won't run out of propellant, and you could stuff it with rocks or simply carry around thousands and thousands of BB's (which is easy to do).

I've been watching some episodes (the first 2 and last 2 of season one, I'm about to start season 2) of The Colony. It's an experiment where people stuck in LA after a killer flu pandemic have to survive. They have some decent tips, ideas, methods and strategies while keeping it entertaining. You can watch it here, try and use megavideo, it works best for me. http://watch-series.com/serie/the_colony

This is where the principles of guerrilla warfare come in.

I'm experienced in making alcohol. Right now it's mostly a recreational skill but it could come in very handy in a long-term survival situation. If you want to learn about edible plants you should try some of the resources in the first post or buy an edible plant identification guide.

I watched a little bit of the first season of The Colony and I thought they had excellent ideas for urban survival. I don't live in an urban area so urban survival is not my primary interest. Still good information to have though.

my families big on wilderness survival too. we have been stockpiling food, camping supplies ect for years. Each member of my family is focusing on a particular area of survival. My dads ex military and a carpenter, he focuses on shelter, building of traps ect. My older bro is a mechanic, he's our transportation expert. He can fix or hot wire anything we need. I'm studying nursing, natural medicine, herbology. I'm currently looking for a native medicine teacher and am building up all our medical supplies. studying up on what plants are edible in our area, what are poisonous, what has medical properties. My other older brother is an expert on urban survival and a computer genius. My father taught us from an early age to work as a unit. cover each others weaknesses and work to our strengths. whee

xD If you're off the grid, good luck with that one! *salutes*
I say, if you can find a hot spring like area to bathe in and such, props to you, just make sure its not a place people know of(READ TOURISTS). You can MAKE shampoo! biggrin
(if you like i can link you to a recipe)

Toilet, you could go fancy and get a compact toilet toilet that you could empty out every day, OR you could go cheap and get a toilet seat/lid and a bucket. Just make sure you dont dump the crap and urine in the river/stream, perhaps grow a garden and use your stool as fertilizer(sounds gross now that its "verbalized". >n<)

For your droid, your battery could likely die, and if you're off the grid, its best to buy one w/o a contract and with cash and only use wifi on it, not activating... and NEVER log into an account anywhere(this is how you could get FOUND). D:
Oh! and a little solar charger. biggrin

As for pasta, I dunno... Good luck with that one. ;D

But yeah, I'm told you can find the Army's survival handbook online for free, but the majority of my knowledge comes from the SAS Survival Handbook by John "Lofty" Wiseman. It's a classic and really one of the best books on the subject because it covers basics as well as the different climates and environments; there is also a section on surviving at the homefront in event of natural disaster or nuclear, biological, or chemical attack.

I have that same book, it's a great resource!
