His first thought about her response was that she was crazy. He was currently traveling with a crazy person who liked to jump over people for entertainment. And roughly ten seconds later he figured out that she was joking and couldn't stop himself from letting out an amused snort. So she wasn't crazy after all. She was still extremely weird in his book though.

"Bad choice of words?" He glanced over his shoulder as he spoke peering through a thin veil of silver forelocks. His amusement came through in his words and somehow the whole situation was relaxing him slightly. She hadn't gone awkwardly silent. To him that said that she was a fairly open person, easy going and it also hinted that she wasn't secretly plotting to do exactly that.

He looked over her face for a second longer before turning his attention back to the not-quite-a-path path that wove it's way along the river bank. If one followed this path sooner or later they'd end up right by the plains and that meant they'd be right where the good food was. The not painfully sweet, spicy or bitter stuff. Ordinarily Deidren walked this path alone but he was starting to think that having some company for once wasn't bad at all.

Ah hah. He had a sense of humor hidden in there somewhere, and Xaivary counted that a good thing. People with no sense of humor didn't tend to mesh with the quirky mare... and usually they were the ones with the problem. Maybe the day was off to a better start than the bird chatter had led her to assume.

"Heh. Not really a bad choice. I just do that for laughs sometimes." The formerly thought of humorless people were particularly fun to irritate in that manner. "I'd say wandering around on my own for so long led me to do some odd things to amuse myself, but I'm pretty sure it's just because I'm weird."

They were getting fairly close to the more open spaces where the trees thinned out at the edge of the plains. She recognized the sorts of changes, if not this particular area. The thought of open space gave her an urge to go for a run. After breakfast, maybe? Another plus also crossed her mind. "Hmm. Less trees, less noisy birds."

"Hmmm...sounds familiar." He muttered mostly to himself. Wandering alone had left him doing many unusual things as well. He stayed up longer and slept less. He trained his ears to listen for any unusual sound. He did all those sorts of things but they weren't nearly as strange as jumping over people though. He chuckled a little as the joke came back to his mind easing it away from serious thoughts.

"Oh, so you've noticed that you're weird?" He quipped picking up his pace just the slightest bit acting like he expected her to react poorly. All the while he grinned rather mischievously though. He was playing, he realized, and it was something he hadn't done or felt like doing for a very long time.

As the trees grew farther apart he started looking the area over trying to pick a good spot for breakfast. "And at this time of day," he added "Less people." Fewer soquili out meant less chatter and more places to pick from. "More field mice though. They're not loud at least." He wasn't sure if his comment about the field mouse was a joke or not. It was hard to figure out what the purpose of his own words were sometimes.

He decided not to give himself a headache thinking it over. Instead he wandered a bit closer to a patch of long grass and started taking bites from it. It had a mild flavor with just the slightest hint of sweetness. Mostly it tasted earthy and of grass, he loved it. It was much better than the short grasses that more often than not just tasted like dirt.

There were a great many unusual things most loners probably found themselves doing... though sleeping less and enhanced alertness were just a pair of many things that were done for the sake of survival, and really not all that unusual when you thought about it. Xaivary's quirky behavior, however, was definitely of the odd bent... and she minded not at all. Nor did she mind putting on a brief burst of speed and good-naturedly trying to swat at Deidren with her tail. "I came to the startling realization pretty early on, I'm afraid. I pride myself on my observational skills in fact! For instance, have you noticed that grass is green? Except for when it's brown, anyway." Yes, she was being completely silly at this point.

She came up a bit behind and to the side of him as he slowed, drawing level at a good range for conversation and nibbling at the grass appreciatively for a moment. "Less people is good. It's always so fun to stumble into the middle of a herd..." Not that all herds were so bad, now that she'd traveled farther she'd found a couple she didn't mind. But usually most of the group would glare at you for not being someone they'd known forever... and the others chattered as though you gave a damn about their hair-day just because you were there. Blah. She chomped on a bit more grass for a moment to clear the sour mental taste from her mouth. Mmm. "Mice aren't bad. They tickle though."

Deidren snorted a little bit with laughter as she mentioned her amazing observational skills...that could use some work. She was certainly a bit of a character which generally meant the dark stallion would be purposefully avoiding her. However, even with all her oddities he found she didn't annoy like the other characters he had run into in the past. Perhaps that was because she wasn't running around bemoaning her ill fortunes or chattering away like a hyped up squirrel.

He lifted his head away from his breakfast for a little to converse a bit more. "So you were "lucky" enough to do that then?" He asked pulling a look of mock horror on to his face. He had always purposefully avoided areas with numerous horses around. From his experience there wasn't much pleasant about the herds currently wandering the lands. "Mice are fine...until...you fall asleep near their nests and the bite ya." He knew that from first hand experience. Hordes of mice were almost as scary as herds of soquili...almost.

"At least when mice corner you ya got somewhere to go though. You get pinched by a herd and it's game over." It was a game he fully intended to avoid to. Stuffy herds with foul tempered or outright giddy soquili were like pure torture. If one joined the had to follow a bunch of dumb rules and if you didn't you got beat down in one way or another. It was a lose-lose situation from what Deidren could tell.

Xaivary gave a non-committal grunt in initial reply to his question and shrugged after a moment. "I've run into a few. Grew up around one. They never have seemed to want anything to do with strays like me." She snorted and shook her head. "I never got why they expected me to be grateful for them tolerating my living in the same general area they were in when they never actually did anything for me. I mean, I know I'm weird and all so maybe I just never got it, but that doesn't make much sense to me."

There was several moments of silence as she ate some more after nodding to his comments about the mice. Then she paused just before taking another bite, tilted her head, and snickered. "Though... speaking of snotty herds and mice, there was one herd I ran into full of complete jerks, and I bribed some mice with one of those sweet sticks. Got 'em to tie a bunch of the group's tails together while they were sleeping one night. That was interesting to watch the next morning." Another brief pause. "That was a while ago though. I mostly try to avoid big groups down here in the lowlands any more."

Deidren nodded his head slowly as the brown mare spoke. Everything she said sounded so familiar to him. While he hadn't grown up in a formal herd the male that had invaded his life acted like it was one. Everything she had mentioned were things that he had believed and tried to uphold. Life that way was hellish even without the attempts he made to rid himself of Deidren forever. He scowled slightly at the less than pleasant memories before forcing his attention back to the current conversation just as she started in on a story.

He stared at her in awe as she spun her tale. It was impressive. No, it was beyond impressive. A wicked grin spread over his lips as she concluded her story a bit of a chuckle rumbling in his chest. "That is so cool there are no words to describe it." He chimed in finally. At the moment he was actually finding himself wishing he had some sugar sticks of his own. Though the world would never be the same if he had enough of them. The thought was pleasantly evil but he set it aside for another time.

"Luckily avoiding them inn't to difficult." That wasn't to say that they were easy to get around, but he knew places that they didn't like to travel and he could smell a group of them from miles away, or so he liked to think. "Be nice if they weren't around though." He pawed at his breakfast almost thoughtfully before bowing his head to take another bite. At the moment he wasn't feeling hunger pangs anymore, but eating seemed like the thing to do.

Xaivary was actually slightly startled by the praise. That wasn't something she usually got when she mentioned little adventures like that. Or, at all. Barring a couple of long time friends the best she usually got for those was a frown. It was... refreshing? And for just a moment she felt a bit warm and fuzzy inside. "Glad you approve," she said, grinning slightly.

The moment passed pleasantly before her attention and thoughts turned back to the herds wandering the lowlands. "Not everyone's as bad, but the ones I've met that aren't don't seem to be from around here. It's like all the morons got concentrated in one spot."

She finished eating and gave a good long look across the empty plain. It was still early enough that many were still asleep, and the ones that were wouldn't likely be wandering far enough to bother them for a while yet. "...Wanna go for a run?"

Oh he approved alright. He approved and kind of wanted to try it himself. Lacking any way to get help from just about anything that want would go to waste.

He snorted a little bit as she went on after a small break in the conversation. "Maybe they aren't as bad cause your a girl..." Too many this would be a joke. Deidren was completely serious even though a touch a humor laced the words. He got the feeling that even is he approached on of the nicer herds he'd be chased off. "But," he started again trying to break apart his own change in attitude. "If all the morons of these parts really do gather in one area then they'll at least be easier to deal with. Y'can just sen hoards of mice in to pester them." He chuckled quietly, wickedly, to himself as his imagination set to work.

He only stopped when he heard the mare's voice again. "A run?" His eyes looked out over the empty plain. He hadn't taken a run just to run since he was a child. "Errrr...sure..." He said finally a tad uncertain of his desire to do this still. Part of him was of the impression that it would be fun once he got back into it.

Xaivary canted her head at Deidren at his comment on her gender, taking a moment to mull it over thoughtfully. "You're probably right. Most of 'em seem to think mares are always weak-willed and silly." It certainly explained why they all got such a burr in their tails over her having such differing opinions on pretty much everything. It was also true that they were easier to avoid, knowing generally where they would be. She was usually more concerned about the ones that wandered in odd places; they were either worth talking to or worth avoiding, and it wasn't always easy to tell which before you were stuck.

Deidren certainly seemed to be enjoying his moment of reverie, and she just almost felt bad about breaking him out of it. Better her than someone else showing up or something though, right? She ambled closer to him, giving him a playful and almost absent minded seeming thwap with her tail. "We could race, if you want? That tree over there, maybe?" She motioned with her head. Running for the sake of running was her thing, but she wasn't opposed to a race. Especially if having a goal at the end of the run would help her unexpected companion feel less awkward about it.

He snorted lightly at her comment, amused. Perhaps is was because most mares were weak-willed and silly. Or at least most of the girls he'd known were. Xaivary was different, but then he wasn't entirely sure Xaivary was a girl at all. She looked like a girl and sounded like a girl but she didn't act like most girls. If she was a girl she sure wasn't a very feminine one. He thought it worked well enough for her. It made her easier to hang out with. Real girls were just confusing.

He smirked as her tail got him lightly on the flank. "A race huh?" He followed the motion out to the targeted tree. The look in his eyes was still slightly unsure, but he was pretty sure he could manage a race. It was a competition, a challenge. He'd never really raced just for fun before but there was no way he was stepping down from a challenge.

A more confidant look settled on his face as he focused his full attention on the tree, the finish line. "Alright, a race sounds good." He said his voice lightening a bit with excitement. For a few moments he simply stared at the tree while shifting from stance to stance stretching his muscles slightly. When he was finished he opened his mouth and proclaimed, "On the count of three, we start."

"One...two...three!"

It was just one of those things about most guys that Xaivary had picked up on at one point or another; they liked competition most of the time, though whether it was a lean toward physical or mental competition sometimes varied. Fortunately that seemed to have been the case here as well, and thinking of it as such seemed to brighten his opinion about the run.

And races were fun anyway. She prepared herself in her way as he did in his, and as soon as he reached three she was off like a shot. The air rushed by, the earth seemed to pound back as her hooves impacted. It was exhilarating; as the tree drew closer she almost regretted the end of the moment. At least until the dark stallion began to pass her.

Much of Xaivary's free time was spent running, and there was certainly no one that could claim she was slow. She hadn't really had the opportunity to race much, and when she did she rarely lost. By the time they reached the tree she'd fallen more than the length of another Soquili behind Deidren and she was genuinely impressed. Gently slowing her pace and turning around to face him properly she grinned at him. "Not bad! Not bad at all. I don't get beaten at a race very often."

On his own count he took off as well. His hooves tore at the ground beneath him as the wind caught his hair. His silvery mane whipped about like it was made of fire. The chain resting around his throat shifted letting the gemstone ornament beat against his chest echoing the beating of his own heart. His crimson eyes were so focused on the tree ahead of him that he almost didn't notice Xaivary as he overtook her.

This was the first time in a long time that he had raced for nothing more than enjoyment. His muscles, however, had grown used to running after years of torment from his step father. The motions of running were all the same but the feeling that coursed through his body was very different. It was elation. It was unbridled joy. It was pure happiness. It was...over?

He turned sharply around the tree, his goal and managed to come to a stop by digging his hooves down a little ways. Well damn. That had been too fast. He'd been enjoying himself. He stared hard at the tree willing it to go grow someplace further away. He didn't have time to really get mad at the tree before Xaivary came up to the tree considerably easier than he had.

"Yeah?" He asked inclining his jaw slightly a grin spreading on his lips. He must have appeared quite cocky all things considered but he felt he deserved to be a little smug. "I must be pretty good then if I can beatcha."

Xaivary felt as though her whole body was twitching. The urge to keep running for the sheer joy of it was singing in the back of her head but she wasn't going to just take off. With some people she might have, but she was genuinely starting to warm up to Deidren, so she wouldn't.

"I'd say so, but you'd probably have to prove it to anyone else." She canted her head at him, still grinning. "Though that's more fun, I think." The thought of further racing was planted firmly in mind after that statement and she peered around again, trying to pick another target for a race. Or just about anything to give her an excuse to run some more without simply darting off on him. "Wanna go again?"

"I could do that." He quipped still grinning. At the moment he felt genuinely good. His heart was beating so hard in his chest it sounded like a war drum was playing in his head. And still it didn't feel like a bad thing. When she offered another round he got the feeling that she had her own drum sounding in her head.

"You know it!" He scanned the surrounding area for a brief moment before shouting, "OnetwothreeGO!!!" Like a fox with hounds on it's heels he took off forgetting to name a target for this round. In fact, he'd forgotten to even pick a target in the first place. He'd been too impatient to think about details like that. He just wanted to run again. He wanted to feel the wind catching his hair, feel the ground beating back against his thundering hooves and feel the almost painful thudding of his necklace against his chest.

With all those sensations wrapping around him his thoughts were slowly becoming more muddled while at the same time his mind seemed clearer. Running like this was weird but at the same time he couldn't quite figure out why he'd ever stopped doing this just to do it.
