While he had heard the footfalls outside, he expected some lone student, teacher, or janitor to be moving past, and certainly not someone that Andrea knew. It only occupied a second of his time to notice, and he was back to the more demanding task of learning to dance. Noises in the hallway pretty much came down to the constant back noise of school in the end, something so familiar that you forgot about it, and with his back to the door, he didn’t even notice how close this stranger was. If he had, he would have stopped and waited for them to leave.

Curse his magnificent concentration.

The door clicking had the same effected as shooting off a starter gun, and he jumped before turning about. It didn’t even occur to him to remove his hands from the other boy, and by that time, the redhead had already seen them doing the training-wheels two step (or whatever the dance they were doing).

“Ah?” Words escaped him, fleeing the scene to leave him standing there, as awkward as he was dancing, and while Nora and Andrea chatted and he was introduced, he was trying to think of a way he could grab his things and race out the door the girl was otherwise occupying. The window seemed like a nice option.

While he wanted to pummel Andrea for admitting he was learning to dance, he was quickly introduced and the damage had been done. “Uh, yeah. Nice to meet you.” His words garbled somewhere and he looked around before stepping aside. What if she went around telling people he was learning to dance? Andrea might have the confidence to tell everyone to screw themselves, but he didn’t. This wasn’t the sort of attention he needed right now. “Maybe we should reschedule.” He pointed out, thinking it best if he just rushed out while he could.

His eyes glanced up to the girl, wondering what she was thinking right about now.

"Of course I'm interested!" Nora responded, hands at her hips. "Do you really think I'm going to let myself be a wallflower at prom? I'd sooner literally break a leg!" Her voice sounded a little on the playfully patronizing side, but her general demeanor otherwise didn't exude very much hostility or anger. She seemed friendly enough. Maybe a little overbearing, given she'd just willingly interrupted a private dance lesson, but still. Friendly.

"It's nice to meet you, Ladon," she said politely, with a little wave. "If I'm really interrupting anything, just say the word and I'll leave you alone to finish your lesson. But..."

And she drew out that word a bit, obviously out to lead it into a reason why she shouldn't have to leave quite yet:

"I don't think I don't know very much about swing dancing, and if you don't mind, I think having another partner to work with could make everything a whole lot easier, don't you think? We'll all have someone to dance with or someone to watch!"

Nora's perpetual sweetness was something Andrea was more or less used to, but something about her tone coupled with the fact that she had just caught him dancing with another boy made him a little nervous. Had Ladon voiced his question, the taller boy would have agreed that he would have liked to know what Nora was thinking, too. Andrea trusted that she would not judge him if she knew that he did think Ladon was a little cute, but still. He also had a feeling that Nora might feel the need to share the joy with all the world. And this was the first time he was a bit apprehensive of that.

So Andrea felt a bit relieved when she instead asked for a dance lesson for herself.

"You upperclassmen and your prom," he huffed, making the joking tone in his voice obvious. Then he glanced back to Ladon. "Maybe you two can partner up, and it'll be a little more normal that way, with Nora dancing the girl's part and you dancing the boy's part? And I can run the music and keep time for you or whatever." He smiled at Ladon, hoping there was no sign of a blush on his cheeks.

At the other boy's request to reschedule, though, Andrea took on a faint look of concern. "Would it help to take a breather and sit down for a few minutes while I show Nora the basic step, and then you two can both give dancing a try together?" He did not want to directly ask about whether or not his injuries were okay with Nora there, for his male friend's sake - Ladon looked flustered enough already, and Andrea doubted Nora babying him would make him more comfortable.

He really had no idea what he wanted. It had been one thing to dance with Andrea, who he knew was a dancer, and was more of a teacher to him and a …friend? Well, they had only met a few times and hadn’t really sat down enough to talk in a way that established them as friends, but he knew Andrea enough to feel a bit comfortable around him. Nora was a complete stranger, and while she knew Andrea, that didn’t mean he trusted her. Still, her happy, bouncy attitude didn’t make him feel like he was going to be picked up by the scruff of his shirt and tossed into a locker for dancing with a boy. She instead didn’t even seem to take notice, and was more interested in dancing.

Since he didn’t want to end the lesson this quickly, knowing now through the first steps that he would need all the time and help he could get without taking all of Andrea’s time, he decided to stay. Dancing with Nora was something he had to consider for a moment. It was true that dancing with a girl would be more appropriate, and she was only slightly taller than him, but the person he had intended to dance with in the future was far taller than he was. For that reason, Andrea fit the bill. Still, it was Andrea’s call, and if he had two students, then them both learning made sense. Girls just made him nervous, especially strange girls.

“You don't have to go. You're Andrea's friend after all. If he's teaching me, then it's only natural he teaches you, too." He looked back up to the taller boy. "You can teach her what we just did, and then we can learn together.” He didn’t think he’d be any good at showing Nora the first steps, and he needed to sit now to get a breather from such a unexpected surprise. Settling down in his chair, he watched the two get settled. Really, Andrea seemed to have no problem switching from a boy to a girl. His confidence had to be genetic. It was the only explanation Ladon had.

Nora probably would have gotten a bit too cheerfully enthusiastic if she'd been able to put two and two together regarding choice things about Andrea and this dance lesson, she had an invasive way about her that was masked -- well, caked over -- by overwhelming sugary sweetness. Fortunately, one two did not encounter the other for her in this circumstance and she remained oblivious, more interested in learning new dance moves to impress a potential prom date with than she was with any personal conflicts Andrea may have been hiding in his closet.

"It's okay, don't you worry, sweetie," she was saying, before popping her tote bag up off her shoulder and dropping it next to the door. "I promise I won't bite, and I just know we'll do fantastic with Andy teaching us! He's just a wonderful dancer, we're lucky we don't have to pay him for this."

The girl was just bubbling over with funloving enthusiasm, and approached the makeshift dance floor with a playful twirl before stopping in front of Andrea. "I guess I'm ready whenever you are. Let's get a swing in our step!"

Andrea nodded at Ladon's response, and let him sit down for the moment. Then he added, "Oh, if you want I guess, you can look through my music player for anything you like. I have a 'swing' playlist if you want that, and some pop music, but I dunno what you're into music wise." He chuckled lightly and combed his fingers through his hair. "Also a big playlist of Stravinski, but he won't really work for this dance."

Then he turned to Nora and held his hands out for her to take. "Basically, we'll step in place with one foot, then the other, then you take a sort of half-step back with your first foot," he told her. "And you always start with ... ah...." The dancer shook his head a little. "Sorry, was just teaching the other part, have to flip my brain. You would start with your right foot. We both step on the same side, and I start with my left, so, yeah, you start with the right."

He leaned their clasped hands to one side to take the first step, as he had done for Ladon. "One." Then the other way. "Two." Then he stepped back with his first foot, shifting his weight back and then forward again. "Three-and. We'll step apart a little on that one." Then he looked up at his pink-haired friend and smiled, and started to count out the steps again.

Maybe Nora was too sticky sweet for his liking. Calling him ‘sweetie’ was not winning him over quickly, and he started to feel a bit sick to his stomach, much in the way you felt when you ate your weight in chocolate and followed it down with a jug of Grape Koolaid. It could have been nerves, but it could be Miss Sunshine bouncing around and spilling her excited optimism everywhere. There was something about being upbeat, but this girl was the techno-remix of that.

Andrea had strange friends.

When asked to look at his playlist, he bashfully rose his hands and shook his head. “Oh ~ no. This is just fine.” What did he know about dance music? He was even less of a DJ than he was a dancer, and he always worried that messing with someone else’s things ran the risk of breaking it. There was also the fear that he would pick a song and get both of them sticking their tongues out in disgust, wondering what in the world was wrong with him and his taste of music to the point that they didn’t even want him in the room anymore. Even though he knew it was Andrea’s playlist and everything on there was something he’d like, he couldn’t stop himself from thinking these scenarios up. Instead, he kept himself quiet as he sat, hands on his lap and trying to blend into the background like one of the inspirational posters hanging around the classroom. Hang in there.

It took a little while for Nora to get a hang of the steps, she kept messing up which feet to use: Andrea wasn't the only one in need of flipping his brain, Nora seemed to keep forgetting that she was supposed to be mirroring her friend's steps. It looked as though the two of them had gone through their fair share of fumbles in a similar vein with this one, though, and the redhead seemed like she was having more fun with it than being frustrated, her pleasant voice popping out the counts like birdcalls.

"This is a bit harder than it looks, isn't it?" she said peppily, and -- as if Ladon could stand to see more cheer radiating from the girl -- her eyes sparked a bit with enthusiasm. "What comes next, the part you were teaching Ladon? Or I guess I'd be dancing the girl's part, wouldn't I?"

She kept darting her sugar-pink gaze back to Ladon while going over the steps, wearing her syrupy smile, checking him out (or maybe just checking on him?) every other moment. Andrea would probably recognize that this was Nora in her Helicopter Mom Mode, but for those who didn't know her quite as well it was easy to misconstrue it as a number of other things.

"Well," Andrea told her, stopping for a moment. "This is the very basic step, so anything else I can teach you is embellishment on this one."

He glanced over at where Ladon was sitting and gave him a small smile. "You two want to try out the basic step together?" he inquired, peering at the dark-haired boy but directing the question to both of his students together. "Maybe if you two are dancing together, I can keep an eye on both of you better and help correct you more easily? I think both of you are already like, at least seventy-five percent of the way there, though. You're both picking it up pretty fast."

Andrea released one of Nora's hands for a moment to brush his bleached fringe out of his eyes, and awaited the response from both of them.

Ladon was evening out the tails that made the bow of his uniform to occupy himself and looked up only to see what progress that was being made. When he did, he got a bright, excited look from Nora that made him jolt and send his chair shaking a few moments before it stilled. WHY was she looking at him? A sudden body check showed he didn’t have anything on him, and looking back, he watched her perky, bright, I-could-scale-a-mountain-for-funsies, expression looking right back at him. It was more than unsettling and reminded him of creepy dolls that giggled and then turned their head slowly around and around and around. While he tired to be optimistic, this girl seemed only to radiate Cloud 9 through every follicle and pore.

He much preferred Andrea as a partner. How was he suppose to concentrate with such a excited girl around him, and she was STILL looking at him!! What did she want? Look at Andrea. Look at Andrea. There! Her eyes turned back and he breathed out. That is until he was called over and sucked his breath right back in.

Easing out of his chair, he went over and stood. “Um…I guess I’ll lead.” Conscious, he wiped his hands before reaching up and setting them in place, hand in hand with Nora and barely a foot apart. He was getting a up close visual of Nora’s shimmering expression and he thought that she would be a great model for Crest. Just then, Andrea started to count, and they started to move. Problems occurred quickly, and he corrected himself as best he could. It wasn’t long till his brow was furrowed as he looked down at his feet to make sure he was doing things correctly.

"I guess that would be the best next step, wouldn't it?" Nora agreed, eyes still sparkling with her overbearing sugary sweetness. It was easy for Ladon to imagine that the moment she touched him, he would be leaving the room with a sudden case of type 2 diabetes. She really was far too enthusiastic, almost like she was putting genuine effort -- and far, far too much of it -- into being happy and fun and carefree, or that she was she was some kind of enthusiasm vampire, given hers had put a drain under Ladon's own.

Fortunately, Ladon didn't spontaneously turn into marshmallow fluff or disintegrate into a pile of sugar sprinkles the moment Nora's fingers wrapped around his palms. Her grip wasn't one of death, but it was most certainly one of awkwardness, soft and smelling of scented lotion and with all the uncomfortable warmth of a pair of hands you really had no interest in touching. It was like the accidental, disconcerting brushing of fingers with a cashier when they handed you your change, except sustained across several minutes.

What made it worse was that Nora wasn't even quiet during the whole process, instead passing across little phrases of encouragement: "Don't worry, we can do it!" and "There we go, we're doing fine." At least she wasn't insulting and picking away at his mistakes -- but still, maybe that would have been better.

Andrea was well-used to Nora's usual default setting of CHEERFUL, and smiled as he watched her encourage Ladon. The way the other boy kept wobbling and looking down at his feet told the more experienced dancer that his was more of an issue of confidence than not really getting it. He hoped Nora could help to bring him out of his shell a little - he liked that about her. If there was good in someone, she seemed to be able to find it.

He patted his hand rhythmically on the desk, just enough for the hollow part to catch the sound and make it loud enough to hear, but did not count along for the moment, giving his students a chance to work it out on their own. Their motions seemed passable, though they were hardly ready for any dance competitions, and so after another minute or so, he asked them, without breaking his rhythm (harder than one would think!), "You ready to try it with some music? You both look great, really, for only having done this like, what, five? Ten minutes?"

Andrea usually found that he did better himself with dance steps when there was music with them. The basic rhythm was vitally important, but all of it made more sense, flowed better, and was easier to remember when he could tie it to a melody instead of just the sound of a metronome or someone counting.

Ladon liked encouragement. He did not like a personal cheerleader, and the focus of both Andrea and Nora made him more self-conscious. He started to worry more about making a mistake, but at the same time worried his palms were getting sweaty and Nora would think he was gross. Then he wondered if his breath was okay and wished he had a pack of mints in his pocket just to be sure. His worry lead him to think up inner narrations for other people, and he started to think that Nora was saying encouraging things because she was getting frustrated and was trying to get him to learn faster to move on. Then he started to think that Andrea was getting bored, or was going to start sighing or rolling his eyes at his slow progress. This in no way helped him with dancing, and he started to get worse. Not use to having anyone cheer him on, the attention was having the opposite affect and made him curl into himself more and more. At the point Andrea started to talk, he was thinking that he should rent a dancing video and learn in the privacy and security of his own room. Then again, maybe he could just stab his leg and use that as an excuse to not dance, but then he remembered how much of a impact that would have on him being on track. Damn.

When Andrea suggested music, Ladon turned and exhaled a quick and almost desperate. “We’re ready!” Music would make it harder for Nora to talk or so he hoped. The girl made his skin crawl by how bright and cheerful she was, and her constant encouragement made him feel as if he was undergoing physical therapy and every step that wasn’t a fall was a miracle, a step in the right direction to recovering and becoming a normal member of dancing society.

If Nora was frustrated, she didn't show it -- then again, she seemed like one of those people who would make it a point to Not Be Frustrated in situations where she could or should be. She remained smotheringly happy throughout the entire practice, and sickeningly encouraging, politely not taking notice of Ladon's sweating palms -- but again, the way she conducted herself with that was as sort of blithely in-your-face as the way Ladon had witnessed her conducting herself with everything else so far. Look at me, look at how polite I am, look at me not noticing your gross hands.

"Music would just be lovely," the girl crooned, her voice perhaps showcasing a bit of its inherently relaxing quality now that she wasn't in physical contact with Ladon anymore. And then, with her eyes widening and expression blossoming yet again, she continued, "Oooh, but how about we mix it up a little bit? It could be fun if we took turns dancing with a professional, Andy, I bet you could just sweep me off my feet."

Andrea poked the center button on his music player, set up with its portable speakers, and a moment later, some old-style swing music started to play. The boy turned it up a little and then looked up at his students, tapping his fingertips lightly on the table in time to the tune. The tempo was a bit faster than the one he had been counting out before, but not by much.

"Is this too fast?" he inquired.

Then the boy laughed softly at Nora's suggestion and stood up. "I could do that if you want, and take turns. Who would like to dance with me first?" If Nora volunteered, it would give Ladon another moment to rest. Or, if she volunteered Ladon, maybe he could try to boost his friend's confidence a bit more. ... Also, he did sort of want to dance with just Ladon again, even if Nora was here now, too.
