o2. Reaction
Arden could absolutely not explain his attraction to the book. It was...bizarre. It was nearly painful to read. The art was disturbing on so many levels. Why had he bought the damnable thing at all?! He put it aside and stared at it, and damned if he didn't feel like it was staring right back. The long-necked girl on the cover was impossible to read. She could be smiling, or she could be grimacing in pain. He couldn't tell.
The man grimaced and forced himself to turn away, but something ran up his spine and his head immediately snapped back. Something was wrong now, though. The girl...she wasn't staring at him. She looked dead. Swallowing hard, Arden stood and took a step back. Never before had he been so afraid of an inanimate object.
It was then that he heard it.
Something deep in his house giggled. It was the innocent, terrifying kind of laugh that usually meant a movie's protagonist was about to be attacked and/or killed. The hair on the back of his neck stood up and he gave an involuntary shudder.
All of a sudden, the windows flew open and the wind began to howl, flipping the book on the side table open. The pages were entirely blank. But he'd just been reading them, how was that at all possible?!
