Corwin breathed an internal sigh of relief when Etoile took her hand from Filante's mouth. Of course he couldn't feel her memories, or take that burden from her, but he could sense the tears inside of her. The places where heat had been, and had left. He could patch it over with cold, but would that be right? He did not often work with his darkness, so much as work around it. But when Etoile took his hand, when she kneeled to face him, he could sense that spiralling cold so strongly in her. And there, as he thought there ought to be in every spirit, a flutter of heat. Either the remainder of heat which had left, or hope for a bright future; either way, Corwin felt connected in that instant. His temperature matched hers. He couldn't help but smile, seeing her there, her height making the kneel awkward.

"Maybe one day I won't be quite so short," he said, "and then you won't have to kneel so uncomfortably." He paused then, and more seriously, but without any intent of harm, asked, "If it's okay to ask... how do you sleep, with that chill?" Corwin wondered if she did, if she had found a way to stop the cold from gnawing. But he wasn't sure if it would work for him, even if she had; the reason he slept during the day had to do with the sun. When the sun was out, he was warm enough to sleep with the darkness in him. "I haven't been able to sleep at night since becoming a Spiritkind."
Corwin squeezed her hand a little, just once. He brought his other hand up to clasp both hands around hers, offering both heat and cold; hers to choose. Neither of his temperatures were insistent, though. He did not want to startle her.

Corwin looked to Filante, for any sign from the older Twilif. He still felt rather useless at expressing himself. Childish, almost; he had these feelings, hot and cold, and no way to explain them. No way to help, tangibly, yet. Filante, he thought, would understand Etoile better than he could in the way that siblings might.

Though Filante could see that corwin was looking toward for some kind of help in expressing or explaing himself to Etoile, Filante would not answer. corwion may have been new, but he had to learn over time how to explain what he dealt with. thoug Filante was the older on of the 2 ram horned ones, yes, he still did not understand a lot about his own sister. she was still... mysterious because of her strange mind. she would flit from being happy to becoming a psychopath in mere seconds, and Filante could still not understand how this worked for her at all. She must not have many friends who could be around her for long, with a behavior like that. looking to Corwin who still looked lost, Filante simply smiled and nodded his head lightly.

- - - - -

"Uncomfortable? No, I am fine. Don't worry about me. Kneeling for little ones is not a problem." Etoile assured Corwin that she was fine. Besides, the ground was fine dirt and grass, if anything. Couldn't hurt too much les there were somehow something sharp or a bug bit you. Listening to Corwin, he then asked a curious question about the weather, the harsh cold here.

"How do I sleep? Well... I rarely sleep. And the cold is nothing to me anymore..." Her sounded rather dull when she replied to him. She didn't seem to be reacting to the cold at all, but Corwin could feel that her hands were utterly frozen over with it! How did she survive like this? Maybe it really was the feelings in her that blocked out the cold, since she was already on the inside and in her heart. Despite being kind at the moment, Corwin could feel the freezing life in her; there was no heat left. She could not look forward to the future from being abandoned, nor did she hope for a new spark of life with love. It seemed that Etoile really was growing darker with each passing night.

"You cannot sleep...the cold must be too bitter for you. Poor thing..." Her pale hands rubbed his gently.

Corwin could nearly cry, feeling Etoile's cold echo off cold inside her. He took Filante's smile to heart; that was all he needed. The nod and the smile, to know Filante didn't immediately want Corwin to back away.

Through his fear for Etoile, knowing some of the dark that filled her, he still smiled when she rubbed his hands. "It's not.. the cold weather," he said, reaching his warm hand up to touch his chest lightly. "It's the cold in here. In me. The scent of a bonfire... blazing in the night, I am that. That rip between night and flame." He heated his own body up on the outside. He was comforted, but hardly cured. He would not sleep until the sun had warmed him. "But I'm little," he laughed again, "so we're talking about a small bonfire, yet. I guess I keep hoping I'll blaze bright enough one day to put the cold out, even though I know that's not true. Has to be a balance."

Corwin placed his hand back on Etoile's again, so that both were clasped there once more. Although he knew she probably would not feel it, he still let a tendril of his warmth wrap around her hands. Against his own, her hands were pale as starlight. He didn't want to let her become only dark, but if she couldn't feel him reach out like he was supposed to, there wasn't much he knew how to do yet. Maybe when he was older, stronger... he could always give her one of his stones, the unpolished semi-precious stones he carried to amplify or channel. What would help though, even if he did? Protection, clarity? He had no stone for heat or comfort; that was always his job.

Etoile's eyes wandered off away from Corwin's, looking at the edge of the forest again. She seemed wary of something, but then again Etoile's mind was always wandering off and playing tricks on her that something was following or stalking her. Lavender eyes scanning the fray, she would glance back every now and then to Corwin or glare at Filante, but nothing seemed to be a threat at the moments time. She looked down to little Corwin, not quite understnading what he meant by a balance of hot and cold. But she nodded anyway, as if she did understand. though the bonfire Twilif tried to lend out a bit of warmth for her to feel, she felt none. the heat seemed to evaporate around her skin from the freezing cold that she was. Her heart may has well been a frozen block of ice!

"Well, you will grow eventually. You just need to find the 4 pieces of heart scattered about. When you put them together, you are given a new heart, body, and life to fulfill. Hopefully you'll be looking forward to that." Etoile stood up again, her fingers barely reaching down to his hands... how tall was she? at 6 or so feet. But her glassy eyes looked down at him, her dark black bangs shadowing her face which made her look most menancing,

"I was too excited to grow up. My childhood was wasted on just trying to grow up. So don't you dare do what I did, and rush the little childhood sparks you have... you let it come as it does." her eyes swiveled to her brother as well witha glare. Filante just looked away.

Corwin withdrew when she stood, to stand beside Filante. Useless, it was useless. Etoile kept looking over them and into the trees. What did she see? Was something out there? Corwin had no idea at all. His senses weren't really above average, nor could he sense heat that far away. Everything he had was a close proximity talent. And he couldn't even explain it to Etoile. Maybe neither of them were that similar, after all, even though he felt the cold in her like he felt it in him. He wasn't sure if it was rude not to answer, but he had nothing worth saying.

He was stupid to have tried, he was just a little Twilif. What good was he as a child? Etoile had explained the pieces of heart, and told him not to waste his childhood in this body. He didn't intend to, but he did crave a stronger form. What if the cold was worse, though? He loved his lanterns dearly. Would they not leave him when he was fully grown? He repeated his usual gesture of running his cold hand over his forehead and then his warm hand, to calm himself down. No more dark thoughts. He wasn't useless. He wouldn't always be this weak. And maybe Corwin hadn't taken to the cold like Etoile had, but he had had someone to help him... He could remember the smell of roses, rain water, the tangy iron notes of blood. If he closed his eyes, he could almost trace the outline of someone on his eyelids.
Little Corwin, you can't pull someone from the cold when it is what is helping them cope. Just be patient, little one. You will understand in due time. "Where are you? Why aren't you here with me?" Corwin murmured under his breath, so quietly that Etoile could maybe barely make it out, though Filante was close enough to hear.

Corwin couldn't help but lean against Filante. Just for a moment, but he did, his skin warm to the touch. Corwin felt better near Filante. He felt like although Filante had cold light, it was still light; something he longed for. His markings flashed in the dark again. With an embarrassed glow, Corwin pulled away. He hadn't realized how drained he was. Time, then? He would try patience, maybe. Perhaps he would know Etoile better in time, and understand better how to help. Even if he didn't, there was little he could do now, it seemed.

Etoile looked as Corwin retreated to Filante's side, her brother. She didn't like her brother, though she use to. What changed her mind of him, even she didn't have a clue. All she knew is that something in her changed her opinion of him, and she hated him now. Looking to the other side of the village, she turned and started off.

"It was nice meeting you, Corwin. Take care." and she simply walked away back into the wooded forest. Perhaps she had something on her mind? Or was she distracted by something...?

- - - - -

Filante could tell that Corwin felt bad about Etoile, but as he said earlier there was nothing he could do for his sister. she was already too deep in the freezing waters to even save herself. Not that she seemed that she wanted to. she seemed to prefer drowning than swimming in sorrow, it seems. Filante heard Corwin murmur something, though he tilted his head when he did. Who was Corwin looking for...?

As Etoile walked away, Filante put an arm around the glowing blue Twilif, "We best be going where it's warm. There are places here that are."

Corwin watched Etoile walk away and felt better, despite himself. She was a reminder of the worst in him, no matter how much he wanted to help. It was miserable to know he couldn't do anything if she didn't want to be helped. Maybe she really had seen something in the forest, but Corwin could not really tell any better than he could before. He wouldn't give up, that's all he knew. He'd just bide. And in the mean time, feel gloriously better. "Nice to meet you, too, Etoile..." He mumbled, even though she wouldn't hear him by now. The voice in his head had faded, as had the smell. Who was he looking for? Strange.

Corwin smiled when Filante put his arm around him. "Well, it seems you were right. Of course you would be," Corwin laughed a little, although it was tinged with a kind of sadness at how right Filante had been. Corwin brushed Filante's hand with his warm hand, heating Filante a little again. Habit. In contentment, he wanted to share his warmth. Corwin finally sighed, and looked at Filante, "So where's warm, then? You're the leader. I'll get your back!" He grinned, mostly to frame the last addition as a joke.

Filante could feel Corwin's warmth again. when they had met up with Etoile, that warmth had faded into a cold air that Filante did not favor at all, which is why he kept his distance from the 2 as they talked and met. Watching hem when they did, he started to feel something towards his sister. a kind of... dislike. But that was over now, and Filante had a new mission; to find them a warm place to keep themselves busy for the night until dawn, where it was then that Corwin could rest in the sunlight. Filante pondered about this an figured he would join his new friend in the morning for a nap as well.

"There are places here call INN's, Shop's, and other housings. they're always warm with a fire going, so we can keep there to be warm! Unless, you rather walk about a bit some more? I'm fine with either." filant's arm slipped away from Corwin's shoulder gently.

Corwin stretched when Filante's arm dropped away, flexing from his fingers to his toes. The night smelled nice, but he wouldn't mind getting out of the cold with Filante. He didn't have much left in him to keep Filante warm, after the meeting with Etoile. He continued to exhale balmy air around them, but it was only so much. "Well, I've never seen any of those... except for housing, I guess. I live in a little place, it's not much. Not very warm. Mostly I sleep outside. I would love to go where there's a fire, though. Would it be alright to go to.. one of those places, that you mentioned?" Corwin smiled.

He took one long look at Filante again, memorizing his face. So he wouldn't forget. He didn't want to forget. Suddenly, he thought of something silly. A trick someone had taught him. "Oh, Filante, look," Corwin made the index of his left hand glow and he moved quickly, tracing the outline of a star. The afterimage, he had learned, would make a star glow, if he kept tracing the shape fast enough. He laughed at himself and stopped, shrugging to Filante, glowing with a blush. He felt lighthearted, kind of silly. Relief that the cold was ebbing. Maybe he could forget, even for a moment, that he had to carry both the light and the dark.

Shy this time, more reserved, Corwin rubbed the back of his neck and asked, "So... you know the way to a place with a fire going?"

As Filante was about to show Corwin the way to an INN, Corwin stopped him, made him look at this neat, childish trick. though Filante was a grown up in spirit, he still enjoyed whimsical little things such as Corwin did. In the night over them, Corwin made the outline of a star with his ember burning finger. Filante smiled and clapped slightly. He definetly seemed happy after just seing something so simple.

"I can't do a trick like that, but it must be nice to have glowing fingers like that!" the starry Twilif's aura rose and bobbed, the little stars about him sparkling just as his smile did. "Well, I guess I could with these little stars, should I try?" Filante looked puzzled as he gazed at the tiny stars and dark blue aura about him. Poking one with his finger, it lit up momentarily and seemed to wobble away for a bit, then he shrugged.

"Anyway! A fire! Let me get you someplace warm." Filante's voice was already a hint at the warmth that awaited the 2. Slowly walking farther into the Lost Village so Corwin could follow, he led them into housing areas and shop areas. the INN wasn't too far from here.

When Filante clapped slightly, Corwin bowed with a little flourish. Filante's aura was mesmerizing, hypnotic; the stars sparkling with Filante's smile. When Filante asked if he should try with his aura, Corwin nodded fervently, watched happily while Filante poked one of his stars. Corwin laughed as it wibbled, and his markings flashed again, the happy sound filling the night around them. Corwin's skin glowed and pulsed with a kind of happy warmth. He was delighted to see that even though Filante was so grown up and serious, he could still have fun with little things sometimes.

Corwin was not used to this kind of interaction. He followed Filante, trailing slightly behind the starry-aura Twilif so that he could take in the surroundings. He had never been inside the Lost Village, not that he could recall. Corwin thought some buildings looked like dwellings, others looked like they perhaps sold goods. "It's not too much trouble, is it?" Corwin asked, suddenly feeling a little like a burden on Filante. He didn't know how anything in this place worked, and he had always been more comfortable on the fringes. Corwin hurried his steps a little to walk closer to Filante.

Too much trouble? What trouble was there? Taking another to an INN to keep warm was no trouble at all! in fact, Filante kind of needed a warming start up as well; the chill here did not agree with him at all. When Corwin had asked that, Filante just shook his head so he could see he was saying no from behind.

"Don't worry about anything as of right now." Filante stopped in front of a coz looking stone building. above in th small drifts of wind that were about, the wooen sign with the letters I-N-N swayed slightly. "We're here~" Filante sung slightly. the INN was lit up and the light looked very warm indeed. Filante opened the door, the night being chased away just a bit by the yellow light that flooded out into the street.

"Just c'mon in! Doesn't that fire feel nice?"

By Filante's sing-song indication that they had arrived, Corwin wondered if Filante had a nice singing voice. Corwn himself certainly didn't, though he liked to sing to himself when he wandered alone, to keep warm. When Filante opened the door, Corwin stared, wide eyed, into the Inn. Filante's question prompted Corwin to enter the Inn with no hesitation, heading straight for the fire. He stood by it, placing his hand a little too close, calling the flames out. Just for a second, for one touch. He smiled, letting his warm hand wrap around his cold one. He turned back and looked for Filante, beaming. "The fire feels wonderful," Corwin said, staying by the fire. He yawned and wondered how much longer dawn would be; it had been a trying night, in a way.

He felt that someone was watching him, and it chilled him a little. But it wasn't a bad watching; he felt a sense of approval, and relaxed. Maybe it was the same presence he'd heard before. While Corwin considered this, his eyes kind of glazed over. When he realized how slack his expression had gone, he shook his head and grinned sheepishly. What did one do, in an inn? Corwin clasped his hands in front of himself and rocked back and forth on his feet, not really sure what he was supposed to do now that he was here. But, he thought, at least the fire's warm.

Looking over to Corwin who seemed to be enjoying the fir, Filante smiled brightly. He was glad his friend was nice and warm again, since he had used most of his energy trying to keep Filante warm. Which was... odd to the starry boy; why would Corwin rather keep others warm than himself? Either way, it was a question to ask later. Filantes toddled over and kneeled next to his friend,

"The fire is very nice. Basically, an INN is just a place where you can sleep for the knight, and then you pay. They feed you food and keep you warm, basically." Filante had his hands out near the fire. "Are you hungry? I can order us something to eat! I have money, so it's okay."

Corwin positively beamed when Filante kneeled next to him. A friend. He never could have imagined that he'd meet this starry Twilif and get along so simply. He felt a little nervous that Filante was so much more composed than he was, but Corwin felt this desire to keep him warm. It was a simple desire, and he didn't want anything else. Maybe that was the way to start; wanting not to start a fire, but a spark. Maybe he needed to take it easy and the fire would blaze without his direction.

"Ah, I understand, now...I have a little with me, too. I didn't really have a use for it until now... I think it was left to me by someone. I don't eat very much... Do you have a recommendation?" Corwin smiled sheepishly. He would feel terrible, using up Filante's money like that. Corwin looked back to the fire, watching the flames curl and flicker. His skin heated in response, their glow reflected all over him. His skin almost seemed to flicker in response. He looked back up at Filante again, his eyes shimmering with a liquid metal sheen. Everything was so new.
