Freak.

Human.

The pair literally had stood in silence until Zeke returned with the ice, which Rong Wei took with a nod and quasi-grunt of thanks. Her face was red, her nose standing out like a sore thumb against her cheeks, and the moment she let the package of ice touch her skin a thin hiss escaped her lips. Ripley turned to watch her actions, his attention having been swaying from thing to thing, but he didn't smile or do anything. Instead he merely looked at her, though Rong Wei could have sworn one of his eyebrows lifted slightly.

". . . What does he eat? I remember the white one, Xiu, had mentioned something about being unable to eat proper human food the last time, and I would rather not have Ripley starve on me. I said I'd take care of him and I'd rather not go back on my word."

She meant most of what she said, partly because she had no idea how her parents would react to watching something so humanoid die on their hands. She was also pretty sure that it could be considered a crime and the people here would hunt her down for it, not that she couldn't handle time in jail. She'd never been of course, other than the occasional one-night stint she had when she drank too much or a brawl got out of hand, but even then she never stayed longer then a few hours. Besides, that was years ago, moving along.

"I imagine it's going to have to be something specific considering I can clearly see he doesn't have any internal organs that are generally required for eating. I suppose drinking falls under the same category as well."

Ah good, a question so quickly and one he had been asked before. Unlike with Anita though, he had a better grasp on a reply and flipped the file open to review what Ripley's Essence was before he gave his answer, only minutely noting Rong Wei had met Xiu. No time to dawdle...Ah...There it was: Black Lightning.

"Their food is quite likely based upon their Essence." He was aware the Frei wasn't paying him any mind so Zeke assumed he could speak freely - but briefly - about what the Raevan was composed of. It would help his new guardian in the long run and looking back now, he should have explained it before rushing the woman into the waiting Raevan's room. Ah well, what's done was done. "Ripley's Essence is called 'Black Lightning' and his soul is that of a Sphinx. Judging by the way he's making the lights flicker now," he pointed up to draw eyes there, "just means he's probably feeding off the electricity." That seemed like the logical reason and Zeke wouldn't be surprised if after a three year sleep the Frei was starving, even if he didn't appear it. What Rong Wei said about not going back on her word made one corner of Zeke's mouth lift, believing this to be true. Okay, he thought, she was starting to warm up to the idea of taking care of such a being. Good enough for him.

"Right," he continued, "I'm sure he could taste the stuff but actually eating it might not be good for him or your floors." He was talking about the void between the Raevans partly-formed chest and hidden by his black rune. It was likely that anything he ate or drank would just fall right out of him, as amusing as that would be to witness. "Once he grows and gets a stomach like a few of the older Raevans have, I'm sure he could start weaning onto human foods slowly." 'Weaning' was an odd word to say when the subject you were talking about was of the human variety but clearly not an infant in appearance. It fit though. "I'll start taking you both up to the front now, since I'm sure you don't want to spend the rest of the night here." He made another 'follow me' gesture with his hand, closing the folder once more and walking toward the cafeteria doors to the hall. Again he held the door open, waiting patiently for the two to follow and taking a moment to rub the back of his hand against his eyes. Darn lights.

"You're free to keep asking questions as we go; the Lab is always willing to answer guardian quandaries."

Ripley's wings flicked the moment he heard his name, his attention being drawn though not enough that he actually bothered to turn his head towards the speaking source. It was best for him to keep his eyes on the woman and the back of whatever it was she now had in her hands (they called it ice?) since she apparently was going to be the one he would be dealing with from this point forward. He had thought it might be the man or the one who'd let him out into that room, either of them being the one to care for him for a while longer, but it looked as though they'd passed hands of him and Ripley was now stuck with the woman who smelt highly of smoke. Not really an unpleasant smell to the Frei (oddly), but one he certainly hoped she did not allowed intend to wear as a natural perfume. Or dress like such a slob. Compared to the man this woman was horrible attired, she looked like a slave when standing next to him. If she wished to be with him, she would have to dress better as well. Ripley could see to it that she'd be properly inspired, there was a manner of things that could be done.

Of course, it was odd to think that he was thinking so clearly. Most of what went through his mind were childish comparisons, the woman smelling bad and looking bad compared to the man, but it was in that fact that the Frei also found himself wanting to be with her more. She was, how do you say...fascinating. In this case, however, that was not a good thing. Not a good thing at all for the Chinese woman.

"I'll cross that bridge of him growing when I get there. There's no point in counting my tiles before they reach my hands, since in the end all we're doing is seeing how things will go. This may be the best choice of my life or this may be the worst thing ever to happen to me - I don't know. I feel this way about everything I do though, so don't wad your panties or anything. I gave my word to you I'd care for it - him come rain or whatever else, and I intend to."

The woman had been silent for a while while the man talked, and Ripley felt his lip twitch at the sound of her voice when she chimed in to explain her ideas on not rushing in to things. It looked like she was prepared for the long run, be it good or bad, and such an attitude likely suited Ripely just fine.

"But if you say he's feeding off electricity, I'll find something he can go at. I'd like to think batteries might be a good option, but those don't hold charges long and. . . ."

Rong Wei rattled off in thought, tapping her lips with the tips of two fingers - a sign she wanted a smoke. She'd done well this long without a cigarette considering all the s**t that had just gotten piled onto her, a freak of nature and the issues that came with such a thing, and her temper was surprisingly leveling out for now. A calming effect perhaps, or she was too tired to care? It didn't matter anyway, as they'd gotten out of the cafeteria during their talk and were at the entrance, ready for the pair to depart. Not depart fast enough according to the Chinese woman, but whatever.

"I'll be in touch should something come up, you can count on that. But anyway, I guess I should say thanks and wish you good luck as well? Hell, I don't know."

The woman shrugged and snapped to get the Frei's attention, seeing as Ripely was still making the lights flicker and was glancing around, as though unnerved. This was yet another new place he'd been taken into and he wasn't pleased, though Ripley played it off by not floating too close to Rong Wei's side. He'd leave that level of interaction for when they reached the open outdoors and he had no place to hide.

"Say good-bye Ripley."

"Good-bye."

The Frei parroted the sound as he turned to face the man one last time, ignoring the woman who had stepped outside and was already swearing something in that odd language while lighting up a cigarette. It might have seemed he was intending on lurking for a little while, as though he were afraid to leave the building, though Rong Wei's sharp voice caused him to glance over his shoulder at her before taking one final look at the man. He decided to leave him with a parting smile since smiles were polite enough, though the one that spread over his face could not have been counted as such. Cruel and large, eyes sparkling with intent, the Sphinx Raeven turned his torso and floated after his new keeper into the darkness of the evening.

There was some agreement there about how Rong Wei phrased the "don't count your chickens..." saying. That would likely be a long time off from now though the vet hadn't the foggiest idea at what time or age the transformation occurred. Nonetheless, she was right there. No need to fret over something that right now wasn't even casting a blip on the radar. He wasn't sure how to respond to what the Chinese woman said about Ripley being the best or worst thing ever for her, so he only quirked a mild smile at her before leading them up the hallway again. He wouldn't "wad his panties" as she had said; he wasn't that sort of man. Besides, he had been daring and gone commando today.

"Since you've said that, I'll be holding you to your word." It could likely be taken as an idle threat, but those small pangs of jealousy that had showed up during Zurine's homing were cropping up again. He hadn't taken to Rong Wei like he had with Anita or even Phiel (though the latter was more a start of an acquaintance, they did get along well enough he thought), but she was going home with her Raevan now no matter how on the border she was about this fact. His was still growing and wouldn't be out of the tank for awhile yet so each weekend he went home alone. He really would need to get that car as soon as he could. The vet dug his thoughts away from that as the doors to the lobby came into view and as before he held them open for the two following behind. As Rong Wei spoke about leaving now he hastily snatched a business card and gave it to her. The phone numbers would help.

"This'll help," he said as she took the card from him, "and thanks. My own Raevan's still..."In utero" right now, so you'll have more experience than myself already." He sounded cheery enough but he was ready to sit down and take however long it was he had left in his shift to just relax. Everything was done now if he recalled right anyway. Rong Wei's snapping drew him to attention too, looking at the Frei. Seems he wasn't taking to the idea of leaving the room, but he'd adjust readily enough. He'd have to anyway, even if he didn't want to. At the farewells Zeke gave another smile and raised his hand in a wave, though Rong Wei was certain not to see it. Ripley, however, did and the returned smile made Zeke's own falter. Something made the downy hairs on the back of his neck rise up quickly before falling down again and the vet shuddered. What was that?

He just doesn't know. Came the thoughts, though try as hard as he might the words echoing in his head sounded really uncertain. He hadn't smiled at all during...He just has to learn. Yeah...
