It took Robin half a second to put the word together, and half a second more to ponder the meaning. "There's a couple meanings, isn't there? I mean, it's a band name, and I think there's something about Satan. Or it could be Keep it Simple Stup-- oh it's that one, huh." Give the girl a ribbon, she figured it out! "... Uhm. Maybe we'll just call you Spectre. It's a properly monster-ish name, anyway," Robin suggested. She obviously didn't mean any insult by that, just a simple statement of fact.
All the talking must have been making her throat dry, because she set aside the sandwich and cracked open a bottle of root beer instead, guzzling it down so fast, you'd think that she'd choke. "So!" She broke away from the bottle with a smack of her lips. "Have you run into any of the monsters out there yet?" Yet, she said, in just that sort of way that implied that it was inevitable.

It really took this girl three answers in to get the right one? It was enough to cause Ellie to pause from her inspection of her work. Heck, it was even enough to cause her to lift her goggles from over her eyes so she could see Robin in all of her FAILING glory.
There was a pretty drastic pause between the offered name of the Ellie-monster and the Ellie-monster's response.
"...I can live with that, I guess..."
It wasn't exactly exciting, but it was simple and to the point. She stared at Robin for a bit longer, still a bit dumbfounded by her failure, but eventually Ellie moved on with her life. Her goggles were set back to where they were supposed to be and her eyes back to her work. Maybe 3 more seconds back into her work, a rather familiar question popped up.
"...Naw, I ain't seen any monsters."
Again, technicalities were such a wonderful thing.

"Yeah? You aren't looking very hard, huh?" Even though this was the sort of topic that was right up her alley - and I do mean right up, Robin ******** lived for this stuff - she seemed disinclined to talk about it further. Maybe she'd caught traces of disinterest in Ellie's voice, and thought the conversation ought to move onto greener pastures. Or maybe her own experience, still marked by some long lines of scab on her leg, wasn't pleasant enough to brag about.
Still. It wasn't like she didn't have other cool things to talk about.
"I met Pecos Bill's ghost," she threw in casually. "He'd possessed this girl. It was pretty cool."

Something about the statement made Ellie laugh.
"I'm probably not lookin' hard 'nough because I've been studyin' fer somethin' pretty important! Can't be lookin' fer monsters if my nose is in a pamphlet all th'time." Of course, monsters weren't real, but Youma were. It was all a juggling act, but somehow it seemed as if the tomboy had found the balance in there somewhere.
Once again, the grease monkey set her work down, though this time she put the screwdriver back where it belonged. The trickier part of the two had been taken care of. Casually, she made her way back to her current company, goggles once again being pushed out of Ellie's line of sight.
"Pecos Bill, eh? No sh*ting?" The junior sounded interested, but not in the "OH MY GOD THIS IS SO AWESOME" way. It was more of a "You plan to tell me a story now, right?" way. Swiping up her burrito again, she sat her butt down on one of the desk tops. Forget sitting in those stupid plastic chairs. Those were uncomfortable as sitting on rocks all day.

"Have I got the face of a liar?" The correct answer was maybe, but she didn't expect Ellie to know that. Robin was really more of an exaggerator than a liar, after all, and she never could keep a perfectly straight face if she was telling an outrageous story she'd made up. This time, though, she was preaching pure Christian gospel, no embellishments included.
Not that anyone could tell by listening, of course.... "There was this girl, right? All dressed up like a Southern belle. I mean, she had the accent and everything! And she was throwing friggin' tornadoes around in this alleyway! You tell me that doesn't sound like a genuine Pecos Bill possession!"

"Everyone lies."
Obviously Ellie had a very high opinion of the general populous' morale. Burrito number 2 was quickly taken care of, and Burrito number 3 soon enough was pulled out of her lunch sack as she listened to the story. It wasn't much of a story, and in all honesty, Ellie had a pretty good idea as to what Robin explained really was.
Yet, the tomboy hoped not to let on that she had a better idea about the whole ordeal. Instead, she asked a simple question when Burrito number 3 was halfway gone.
"...Wasn't Pecos Bill known fer.... ridin' tornadoes? Not thrownin' tornadoes 'round?"

For a span of three eyeblinks, all Robin could do was stare. "... I tell you that I saw somebody that could throw tornadoes, and that's the only thing you can say about it? Geez! You're a cynic, aren't you?" Robin knew the type well enough, after all - sometimes snooty, sometimes intellectual, mostly just plain stubborn, but always frustrating beyond belief. It made as much sense as any other explanation for Ellie's behavior, at least, so why not?
But that was all right. Robin wasn't too bothered by it; Ellie's reaction had been more favorable than usual, after all. Washing down the last bit of her second sandwich, she mused, "I figure, it's not like you'd hear everything from the stories. I see whirlwinds, I see the right culture, and all at the same time as reports say the ghost should be in the area, then I figure it's Pecos Bill, right? Unless you've got a better theory, eh?"

The taller girl's shoulders rolled into a shrug. Burrito number 3 was finished off, and soon enough a bottle of water was pulled out of her lunch sack. "I ain't claimin' t'have an explanation. Jus' pointin' out what I recall from the 5th grade... Pecos Bill was known fer ridin' tornadoes." With a twist of the wrist, she pulled off the top to her beverage and began to guzzle it down. By the time the bottle was tilted back to the usual direction, half of the contents were gone.
After eating 3 burritos without anything to drink, it was obvious that Ellie had been thirsty.
It almost seemed as if it was a complete change in subject, but then the blonde stood up and asked "So, do ya have a sensitive nose or anythin'?"

Pah. Ellie, obviously, was not a visionary. Not like Robin was. If Pecos Bill could ride a tornado, after all, wouldn't it make sense for him to know how to call them? Otherwise he'd just be stuck out on the plains, waiting for a ride that didn't even come except certain times of the year! It wasn't logical. But that was why Robin was the investigator, she supposed, and Ellie was a grease monkey.
"Uhhh... sort of, I guess? I mean, it's not like it's really sensitive, but I can't stand cigarette smoke or stuff like that," Robin answered, baffled. What sort of question was that, anyway?

The blonde's lips pressed into a straight line before she opened her mouth with a little pop sound. "Hmmmm... ya might be better off leavin' then kiddo... I gotta do some polishin'... and the stuff is pretty smelly if yer not used ta it!"
Yes, Ellie's question from before actually had a point to it. Of course, it looked like the sophomore had gotten rather comfortable. Which meant she probably didn't want to leave. "It's yer call whether or not yer gonna stay..." Hopping herself off of the momentary seat of a desk, she began to wander back towards the shop-half of the class.
"I ain't 'bout t'tell ya what t'do."

"Polish?" Robin furrowed her brow. Ellie was suggesting that she leave because she was breaking out some polish? Really - how bad could polish smell?
The girl was just about to open her mouth to say so, too, when an idea occurred to her. Her eye fell on the discarded burrito wrappers, and the sophomore seemed suddenly uneasy. Ellie had just downed three of those in record time. There were biological consequences for such actions, highly volatile and distressing ones. Maybe it wasn't the polish that Ellie was trying to warn Robin away from....
"... Uh. Yeah. Sure! Okay, yeah!" Her lunchbox clicked shut, and the girl rocketed up to her feet. "Wouldn't want to be around for that, uhm, stinky polish. I'll just head out... Andrea and Nora are probably missing me...." And they probably haven't loaded themselves up with gas factory food. Robin was forcing a smile so hard that it was hurting her face, now, but she held it in place right to the door. Waving one hand, she called out, "Enjoy the rest of your lunch!" and beat a hasty retreat from the danger zone.

When the girl finally retreated, the blonde snorted out "Finally!" from where she was at in the strange hybrid of a classroom. Of course, somewhere in the back of Ellie's mind, she couldn't help but notice how sudden Robin's retreat really had been.
There must have been something else she was leaving for. Paying it no mind, the tomboy settled in to work with the polish on her piece. It was a good thing she was by herself, because this stuff probably could peel paint, or at least one could assume so based off the smell. It would be better to turn in a clean project rather than turn in a dingy looking project.
