o3. The Arrival
As determined as Harley had been to stay awake until midnight, it had become obvious early on that that wasn't going to happen. The jackalope boy lay curled on the floor in the fetal position, sucking his thumb (Nathan would really have to quell that habit early with those teeth of his) with his ears folded back, dead asleep. Midnight had come and gone, and still no object had turned into a child of any kind.
Nathan was lent to relief and disappointment when the time rolled by and nothing had happened. It was good both to have a child and to not have a child, so he was torn with that at least. A small part of him believed that Switch had been playing with him, pulling his head so to speak. He should turn in for the night, but before that he needed to know what was inside the trickbox (if anything). He sat on the floor, sliding panels this way and that, twisting and pushing and pulling and often backtracking. When he reached the final step, he simply pulled the front of the box off.
The sound was indescribable. It was something like a "woosh" and a "bang" and a "whee" all at once. Whatever it had been, the box collapsed into 6 square pieces and dulled to black, and the cardboard within more or less evaporated. Sitting on the collapsed structure was a small child, peering up at Nathan as if he had somehow wronged it.
"Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" Harley yelped, having been awakened by the noise. He had really, really been hoping for a Transformer sibling, rather than a creepy one. Nathan just laughed and gathered the child in his arms, taking a quick peek before wrapping her in a blanket. Well then.
"Be nice," he chuckled, reaching out to ruffle Harley's hair, "At least you still have all your cars."
"Put it back, put it back!"
