I would not be less than thrilled. I would chase him in his boat and flip him over, Sakneth said. I think that would be great fun.
"Sakneth suggests that if you ever did make a boat, he would enjoy chasing you and flipping the boat if he caught up with you," B'shir reported. Just in case, he clarified, "He doesn't mean it in a malicious way."
He had his reservations about that assessment, but he'd caught the hint from Sakneth that he was to convey this to Jericho. Many times he censored his dragon's words because he had to. In this case there was really no reason to do so, and so he acquiesced, despite his own misgivings. Maybe it would be fun, at that. Not that B'shir had a well-developed sense of fun. Just a dry sense of humor.
B'shir nodded absently in response to Jericho's question about cross-crafting. "I can't say I'd ever given much thought to cross-crafting before coming here. I was raised to be a dragonrider and my family assumed it would only be a matter of time until I Impressed, so I wasn't encouraged to do anything else. But you're right. There's almost no cross-crafting here. I guess they don't need it?"
As for not liking an ancestor's chosen craft. Well, people did lots of things to please their families. B'shir did all the time.
That's because you haven't the balls to tell them to go suck an egg, Sakneth interjected, eying the terrified fish that swam around his legs. They were too small for him to consider pursuing them.
Thanks, B'shir muttered mentally.
"Glad to hear that. I'd feel bad if he made anyone's work more difficult. We're only here on sufferance, after all, and I'd rather not step on any toes."
Of course, immediately after saying so B'shir remembered the question he wanted to ask but had neglected to. It might offend Jericho. Possibly. But he was curious to know, "How did you meet Tanda, anyway? You're a bit old to have been assigned to the creche."

Jericho chuckled slightly at the image of being chased down by a dragon while in a boat. It was somewhat terrifying "I bet he would. No doubt all the dragons would make sport of me in my little boat." he said with a wry smile, making a mental note never to try sailing on a weyr lake, especially if Sakneth was around.
"I suppose it's not really necessary in such a contained population." the man said with a slight shrug, though it still seemed like a waste to him. Then again, the people of Ghenza all worked hard, day in and day out, they didn't do it to achieve some sort of excellence, or mastery like you would elsewhere, but merely because it needed to be done. There certainly wasn't a lot of innovation here.
Jericho raised his eyebrows in surprise at the sudden change of conversation from the other young man, but went with it. It was a perfectly reasonable question. After all, B'shir was Tanda's brother, he could understand the interest, he supposed.
"I actually met Tanda in the dining hall." Jericho said "It was not long after I first arrived at High Reaches." he explained. "She was interesting, easy to talk to, and alleviated some of my fears about being in a Weyr." he explained, giving a quick synopsis of that first conversation. He still remembered it quite well.

"I don't think they'd actually intend you any harm," B'shir said. He didn't want Jericho to come away with the impression that dragons in general or his in particularly were inclined to violence. Sakneth was proud and liked to get his way, but he would not resort to violence in order to do it. Not really.
"I'm not sure how well it would work on a river, actually. Sakneth uses his wings to help him swim, and I'm not sure if this river is quite wide enough - or deep enough - to accommodate him. Maybe a green could do it, though." The more he thought about it, the more fun it sounded to be on his dragon's back as they pursued some sort of quarry. Ideally Thread, of course, but a boat in water would do for sport.
I have good ideas, Sakneth said smugly. You should listen to me more.
"There does seem to be some cross-crafting with the wher handlers," B'shir pointed out. "They even use whers to help people whose faculties are handicapped. It's actually a remarkable use for the creatures, though I wonder how effective they actually are, given the photosensitive nature of wher eyes."
Whers are squat and squalid, Sakneth interjected. I do not believe they are related to dragons.
Listening to Jericho describe how he met Tanda, B'shir found he wasn't the least bit surprised. Reading between the lines a little, he got the impression Tanda had imposed her company on Jericho, picking him out because of his curling blond hair most likely, and then proceeded to charm him. He tried not to think how many of her charms Jericho had eventually experienced, but his mind was an unruly thing on some occasions. Sakneth, his head underwater so he could look at the fish in their own element, laughed at his human and called him a prude again.
Let the female do as she pleases with whomever she pleases, the bronze advised. It's not as if they can go at it while she's at the Weyr and he's here.
True enough, B'shir acknowledged.
"I'm afraid she does tend to do that sort of thing," the rider said dryly to Jericho. "Just turn up and insinuate herself into people's lives. She really is good with children, though. I expect she'll raise hers well and he'll Impress nothing less than a bronze." It didn't occur to him that Tanda might have a girl.

"You're right of course." Jericho said, knowing that a dragon couldn't intentionally do a person harm "it would be a shame to accidentally lose the boat though. The majority of them aren't dragon tested, after all." he said with a small laugh.
"Thats true." Jericho said, thinking of all the Whers he had seen around. Everyone who had one seemed to either be an invalid, or had a craft of their own besides their bonded. He wondered how smart they were. The ones at home were not very smart, hardly more than oversized firelizards, though they did have their uses. The dragons here seemed a bit sharper than the average, or so he had heard. Something to do with some herb mixture, someone had said. Perhaps the Whers were more intelligent as well.
"They do seem very useful." Jericho agreed "Though I do wonder how they have gotten over the photosensitivity issue, since I have seen them out in the daylight here...perhaps it is a special breed." he said with an unknown shrug.
"They're hardly as impressive as a dragon though." he said with a slight grin to appease Sakneth and his rider, knowing that some riders were a bit touchy about the dragons smaller, uglier cousins.
As the topic turned back to Tanda, Jericho smiled and nodded in agreement "She does work well with kids. Hers will be a happy one, I'm sure." He arched an eyebrow and said "And if its a girl?" a small jab, he had heard from his sister that B'shir could be a little on the sexist side "Though, I have no doubt she will impress as well."

Almost to himself, B'shir murmured, "Dragon tested, seacrafter approved."
Hearing it, Sakneth snorted his laughter, jerking his great head out of the water so he could look at his human. It had been a long time since he'd seen B'shir in such a good humor. It didn't occur to him that his own distaste for Ghenza might have been depressing his rider somewhat. After all, B'shir was too stubborn to allow his dragon to influence him unless it was done sneakily. Sakneth doubted he'd even get through during a mating flight some days.
"I've heard they feed their dragons and whers some herbal mixture that makes them more intelligent. I don't know if it does anything about the photosensitivity, though. Perhaps, as you say, they're a breed apart."
Like their freak dragons? Sakneth suggested. He hated how Ghenzan dragons dwarfed him. He was a bronze, for Faranth's sake, and should not be considered small by any measurement. With poison in his tone the bronze asked, Does he hope to Impress one of those mutants?
Whether he does or not makes no difference, B'shir reminded his dragon. The dragon chooses the rider.
But what does it say about a rider chosen by a freak of nature? Sakneth pressed. B'shir ignored him.
B'shir looked at Jericho levelly. "If her child is a girl, she won't stand, and so she will never Impress."
