Panata was throwing up before he reached the sands. Not the kind were your nerves kinda make you wobble and feel uneasy, but a literally vomiting that meant while his heart and brain were more than ready for all of this his body completely wasn't. The memory of claws raking into his flesh, of being left to bleed on the sands, that feeling lingered inside him enough that the moment the dragons had started humming that morning he was filled both with elation and the need to hide himself.
But there was no hiding now - he had come to stand on the Sands at Ghenza and perhaps Impress his lifemate. He'd gotten to the sands arlight and had been standing with the others when the first egg had Impressed, a Green that killed and maimed before going Between, and it was at that point in time his stomach gave out and he had to turn away and cover his mouth lest someone else really see him puke again.
No, I can't run. I have to stay here, this is what I'm meant to do.
Being at the back of the pack meant that he was safe, that he wouldn't get mauled this time if he didn't do something stupid. . . .right? Right?

The lull in cracking eggs gave him a chance to look around at other people more, and in doing so he spotted Panata. Oh dear. He supposed he should have expected this; after their talk a few days ago he'd become quite fond of the boy but it had to be said that he was a total wuss. Add that to actual trauma, and it was small wonder he was throwing up. Seen as they were behind the Ghenzans hoping to Impress (or at least not averse to it) it wasn't too crowded for him to move... Yes, he could study people and dragons more later, right now somebody needed to look after Panata and it didn't seem as if anyone else was going to voulenteer.
Stepping back a little to get further from the press of people, Fealty moved around to the slight boy's side and laid a hand on his shoulder. "Panata," he began, keeping his voice whisper quiet... and then he didn't have anything to add. Egh. How had he ended up trying to reassure someone? He really had no idea what to say or do... Well, this was a start. "Here," Fealty reached into one of his pockets and pulled out a rag; he'd stuffed quite a few bits of cloth into his pockets just in case somebody did get hurt and he needed to stop bleeding until they could be seen by an actual healer... Still, it did for cleaning up for face and hands after hurling as well.
"You'll be safe back here," he went on, patting the scared youth vaguely, "I'll make sure of it." As best he could anyway, really all he could do was yell at him to move if another angry dragon came their way, give him a hard shove at best... Still, even he had more sense than to voice those thoughts; the boy might wet himself or something.

The Hidden Egg was taking it's turn to hatch. The dragon inside was a timid bronze if there ever was one. Nalina looked absolutely disgusted, and quite frankly, found it to be a blessing when 'it' Impressed to someone who wasn't one of her people.
Had there only been Ghenza folk among them, this coward would have gone between, she thought.
The dragonet struggled to free himself from the final piece of shell caught around his back leg, and managed to stumble out from the clutch and into the crowd. All the faces seemed to scare him, and he covered himself with his wings, daring to peek out only long enough to call for His. Panata! Help me!

Helios watched as others impressed and while some might have groaned at the dragons choices, he really wasn't much affected. It was better to pick anyone than go between. In fact, he was glad to see new faces among the many common ones even if he wouldn't blurt that out as common information to some people in Ghenza. Helios was rather open minded for the most part because his curiosity about the other dragons kept bubbling to the surface despite the last scolding he and his twin suffered.
The hatching seemed to be settling into the usually cracked shell, dragon hatches and finds a person mode. Well, he couldn't say that the whole event would go that way but he hoped that would be the case. He realized that after this event he'd probably get to watch his father examine some of the rascals and that thought amused him greatly.
Dragons were so clumsy when they were small even the ones that thought highly of themselves might trip up on a wing tip. While they were young, he and Jetta would probably get to record their health and nutrition intake even if he was only taking down the notes that his father dictated. Overall, Helios felt good about the future.

Panata had just finished wiping his mouth with the rag Fealty gave him and was slowly gaining his nerves back when the sound of cracking shell filled the air, sending the skin on the back of his neck up in goosebumps and his stomach whirling again. He couldn't see the beast from where he stood, everyone around him rather blocking the short boy's view, though he clearly heard him.
Yes, he heard him. It was a faint cry for help, something that echoed into his heart. It wasn't a trap, he'd actually Impressed to...a bronze. There would be time for him to sort that out later, for now he needed to get to his dragon! He could feel the fear seeping into his very being and he could clearly seeing the sneers from all the people on the sands, Ghenza not happy at all that such a dragon was born amongst them.
But Panata was happy. He was very happy, and he started toward his dragon at a walk-trot that almost ended with a run and him wrapping his arms around the shivering mass that was his lifemate.
"I'm here! It's alright, I'm here!"

Jarvi's arched brow rose high and he stepped to the side, hearing a boy beside him retching. Disgusting. The same boy, however, began a hesitant, stuttering movement through the crowd, toward an equally cowardly bronze dragon.
Holding in a wry laugh, too old for his small body, Jarvi assumed that the Ghenzans were relieved. None of them wanted this creature as their own. In fact, they were probably rather disappointed with this clutch so far.
Soon the boy was running through the crowd and crying out, with relief and fear. Interesting. At least they matched. Jarvi's gaze found the sky, estimating the time of day. Most of the tranfers were probably glad for the break from work, but Jarvi had a lot of things he could be doing instead.

When Rinee saw that the bronze had chosen a familiar face - she couldn't remember his name, just that he was a newcomer she had met - she was genuinely happy for the boy. She clapped her hands lightly and bounced up and down giddily on her toes. Of course, this reaction wasn't much different from what she'd given the other two when they had impressed.

...Well, fine. He should be happier for the youth than he was, that dragon couldn't have been for him in a million turns, and he probably wouldn't have the patience to deal with a cowering lifemate anyway. Having a wimpy friend was one thing, it was quite another to have it inside your head all the time... Still, it was a bit galling to see his young friend walk off towards his lifemate. The boy still had turns left to Impress. This was probably he his last chance, why couldn't that have been him? He wanted it to be, not to that dragon, just to a dragon, a dragon right for him. A mind to equal his would be nice, or perhaps a dragon with actual people sense...
But there was no use moping. Sighing slightly, Fealty moved forward once more to stand just behind the Ghenzan boys and girls. There were still eggs, there was still time. It might still be his lucky day.

Jericho watched the hatchings with interest that was marred by a brief sadness when the first of the hatchlings went between. Such a shame the poor little creature had not found hers...The other transfer, Hivex, he thought his name was impressed and moved off again, and Jericho gave him a warm smile of congratulations. He wasn't familiar with the boy, but it didn't matter. He wished him well. When Panata impressed though, Jericho gave a shout of happiness "Grats Panata!" He said, slapping the small boy on the back and congratulating him in a much more familiar fashion than he had the other boy. Good for him, good for him. Jericho found that he was well and truly pleased that the boy had found his at last, especially after that fiasco at the last hatching that had so hurt and upset Panata. He hoped he'd be up to the task of ignoring the slights he would no doubt have to endure as a transfer who had snatched away one of Ghenza's precious dragons.

Koriander had actually been near the shore at the time the humming started. She had been taking a package to a family friend and was on her way back home at the time. Something had bubbled in chest when she heard it, when she saw the people begin to make their way toward the water. Excitement? Maybe. When she arrived there was already a small throng of people and more were still arriving.
She stood calmly amongst the crowd of Ghenza youth, standing around the clutch. She didn’t join in the nervous twittering of the girls around her but instead kept herself to herself, as she usually did. There were no dragons around, except for the gold lying protectively behind the clutch, and it helped to relieve the tension that was building in her shoulders. Every one of those eggs out there had a dragon inside of it, hungry and thoughtless beasts.
When the first egg hatched, the girls standing near her were unprepared. They panicked and they suffered for it. People cleared away from the area, leaving the body. It wasn’t the first time that she had seen someone injured at a hatching, but this was by far the closest she had been to it. Koriander watched the wounded walk away and swallowed the disgust rising up her throat. Beasts, she thought, vicious beasts.
More hatchings, more impressing. Outsiders impressing! What could she say to that? It was the dragons who chose their riders, if they chose an outsider over a person of Ghenza birth, well, it only affirmed her opinions. Another dragon broke free of its shell and staggered out onto the sands. As it moved its wings caught the light and Koriander’s heart skipped. The wings on the hatchlings were weak, hardly anything, but she saw for a moment what they would become and remembered why she was there.
She kept her face expressionless and watched.

The Brown Spot Egg hatched next. The most patriotic of Ghenza's residents held their breath. It was a relief to know the new bronze was far less of a sideshow attraction than the one before him, but without knowing who he planned to Impress, they could only wait...
...and then, finally, relax somewhat.
The dragon stumbled a bit at first. The most damage he did was knocking a few people over on accident--or so it seemed. He took the longest in deciding so far, eventually setting his sights on one boy in particular.
That boy he approached and promptly headbutted. The gesture looked as though it was intended to be friendly, but the unexpected force no doubt had the poor fellow dropping like a rock. Your posture is horrible, Shenmine.

Ah, another bronze. Jericho smiled to himself wistfully as he watched the sedate creature find his and impress. It seemed like a very stolid sort of dragonet, and he found himself wondering if he would ever find his lifemate. He could always hold out hope...at least until his twenty second birthday, then all chances would be gone. Well, he was twenty and a half a the moment, so he still had time, though he felt it slowly but steadily slipping away from him.

Another bronze, not too interesting to him, so Fealty took his eyes off it and looked back over to Panata... Poor lad, looked like he was struggling with the big scared bronze. Still, there was nothing he could do for either of them at the moment save hope they didn't somehow get caught up in violence. At least the boy who had been so terrified a few moments ago now looked overjoyed. Yes. He was jealous, but he was still more than glad for the young glassmith.
Ah, well finally a bronze took to a Ghenzan boy, that should at least lessen any bad feeling that might have been building; two bronzes was already a lot for a clutch this size, for there to have been a third that also chose someone of High Reaches stock would have been a really kick in the balls to this shut in place.
So, what did that leave then? Gold egg; not him, dead egg; not him, but there were seven that might be interested in him. Not amazing odds, but hatchings never had amazing odds... Perhaps he would be lucky here because he wanted it more than the Ghenzans. Maybe that was why half of the dragons that had hatched thus far had come to High Reaches folk. Who didn't want to be wanted? The Ghenzans were too dispassionate by half, and that was coming from him!
On the assumption that it was desire that was currently giving his peers the edge, Fealty turned his mind to all the reasons he wanted to Impress, needed to Impress! He couldn't go back to his Hold. He could never be happy there.

As if being summoned by the inner-voice of his soon-to-be-bonded, the Split Egg wiggled, stopped, shook rapidly then shattered. The brown that stumbled out was a respectable sort to the people of this isolated nation.
At first. Fealty! I hear you! I am here!

So many browns and bronzes, though Laelin, and for a moment he was a bit nervous, his chest full of worry. He felt pride that they were so handsome and large, and yet at the same time, the interlopers here seemed to be having such luck --
Jealousy was an ugly emotion. Perhaps, Laelin thought, he was below the interest of even the dragons, a brown boy covered in brown clay who was so dull and shy that even a dragon could not have cared less about him. He breathed out hard. At least, he thought, Shen had Impressed. One among the boys he could call friend... He smiled anyway, though his stomach had knotted itself firmly with frustration. "Congratulations, Shen," he raised his voice to cry, despite himself.
There were yet eggs on the sands, and Laelin could wait. Patience had always been his forte.
