If a diety created all that is...

"Why yes, I was looking to spar Mr....umm...I'll call you Tophat, is that okay?" Xeiashi said to Bapp. Before any answers came, he heard his name called. "Yup, I'll be right over!" he shouted back, then added a 'one sec' in Tophat's direction.

He exited the Arena proper to find a catwoman awkwardly holding up a large piece of paper. "Right there?" he asked. A 'yes' came back his way, and he immmediately began focusing on the poster sticking to stuff. A glow came and went from his palm, and he finished by Dispelling any magic on the catwoman's hands. [Glue and Dispel] "There, it should stick for the next week...and I unstuck your hands, just in case." He said as he returned to the waiting Mr. Tophat, though not before picking up a sturdy stick to defend himself with.

"Ready when you are!" he called out to the eccentric man

On immediate response to the blue haired kid, he lunged forward and dug his elbow into his adversary in the area between his neck and shoulder, an effective stun attack.

"It isn't a good idea to give your opponent the first move, you know." He smirked.

If a diety created all that is...

Frail as he was, the attack completely numbed his left side; thankfully he was right handed. "Oof...Oh well, it is better than beginning a friendly duel when the opponent isn't ready ya?" he replied as he twisted away and began a chant to accompany his glowing palm. He thrust his staff in a sweeping gesture, channeling his magic through it in a possibly futile effort to increase its effectiveness. He settled into a simple defensive stance as he shouted to Meta "I hope you're a healer, because one of us might get pretty beat up...and I don't think its going to be him!"

[Break]

((also, is it a strict 1 ability limit, or can parry/sig travel/sig strike be used in the same turn as other abilities? also, pretty much every action requires a roll, right?))

(( Only one ACTIVE skill may be used per post. An Active skill is anything you have to actively use. You can have as many Passive skills going as you want, though, and with a skill like Dodge you can [Dodge] and then [Attack] on the same turn. Examples of other passive skills are the weapon proficiencies.

Every action that would harm your opponent requires a roll. EXCEPT if it's an Illusion skill - then it automatically succeeds, and your opponent needs to roll to escape from it.

@Bapp - Be sure to STATE the exact skill you're using, and instead of stating that the attack was effective allow your opponent to react to your roll. There's no need to go back and change your post after you roll. ))

((Thought I'd give a few pointers, seeing as I have a bit of experience.

First piece of advice I'd like to give is to keep a separate tab open for the Skill Guide. I say this because most people would assume that all skills follow the "1-2 fail, 3-4 partial, 5-6 success" framework, but this is not always the case. Keeping a guide open for quick reference helps a lot in this regard.

Adding to what Lorika said, it would be advisable for everyone to get used to rolling and posting at the same time. Some of you edit your posts after rolling, which isn't really necessary, not to mention it causes a lot of problems for characters with skills to counter the one made by the opponent.

A prime example of this would be the Parry skill which gives the user a chance to lessen the effect of a successful attack. How would the user be able to make a proper Parry post if the opponent says that the attack had already connected? Remember that it is up to your opponent to dictate the effectiveness of your attack based on the roll you made, so editing isn't really necessary; just keep your post open-ended:

Open-ended pt. 1
Without another second to waste she charged in, thrusting the wooden trident towards Harata. She'd answered her question.

[Signature Strike]

Notice how it was never mentioned if the attack connected or not? That leaves the opponent with enough flexibility to decide whether they take the hit or counter with something else. For the sake of discussion, let's assume Signature Strike rolled a 6, and the opponent decided to counter the attack with Parry:

Open-ended pt. 2
Anticipating the attack, Harata raised her weapon in attempt to block it.

[Parry]

Again, note how it wasn't mentioned whether the block was successful or not. That's because there's still a possibility that the Parry would have no effect. With Parry, if you roll for 1-2 it will take down 1 point out of your opponent's preceding roll; which means Signature Strike that was once 6 gets bumped down to 5, which is still a success.

So remember, open-endedness is key unless your skill is a guaranteed hit.

Also, I understand that people edit because they want a specific end-result. In which case you could simply hint the desired result in your post for your opponent to pick up on:

Hinting
Grabbing her weapon's handle firmly she made an attempt to spin it around. Had her intention been met with success the Duremite would find her boken several feet away, far out of reach.

[Disarm]

Aaand that's all I can think of at the moment. I hope this helps, and have fun fighting!))

OMFG! I forgot to roll! I knew I forgot something important...did I mess up too badly?

^for Break

also, so Dodge can be used at the same time as other skills (yes I remember the once every 5 turns thing) but does that apply for parry/counter? or are those the kind of 1-only 'normal' skills?

(( ;//3//; <33

Dodge is passive I think, so you can use that along with any active skill like Signature Strike. Only one passive skill and one active skill per post. Lorika, maybe it'd be helpful if the skills were tagged? So we can tell which skills are passive and which are active?))

(( Well, he can still use it, but it only had the effects of a regular Strike.

I think I may shorten Sig. Strike to just Strike, same with Travel. The "Sig." bit was my ex's bright idea >3> based on the "customisation" aspect of the skills...

It's been bothering me a while... so clumsy and long... so yeah, there we go. ))

((I was using it as what it is supposed to be, an improved knock/knockback skill...also, would it be too derailing to just say that Bapp used a normal Strike?))

(( As Bapp didn't state his skill and you responded thinking it was a regular Strike, then no, it isn't derailing at all. Sorry Bapp, your awesome stunning blow has been negated by your awesome forgetfulness XD

I hereby definitely state that used on a person Break has the effect of a regular old Strike.

EDIT: And to clarify further, a Strike will be ineffective in breaking down a door or breaking open a lock - Break is necessary for that.

And I'll be watching the battles here carefully as inspiration for any changes that need to be made... so my advice to you guys is to be nice and realistic, use the effectiveness of a roll as an indication of the damage dealt, don't let your characters remain unfatigued forever... just be sensible. Bapp. ))

[Endure]

Bapp was knocked back from the force of the strike.
"Oh-ho, a magician?" He grinned. "I was thinking of picking it up sooner or later, but for now Imma' have to learn through experience."

Pushing up his top hat, he shifted into his own battle stance.
"The name's Bapp. Hope I'll enjoy this fight!" Bapp announced his name as he kicked, aiming for his opponent's solar plexus.

If a diety created all that is...

"Bapp is it? I'm..." Xeiashi began, only to find a foot flying at his chest. He instinctively brought his makeshift staff up for a block.

[Parry]

((I'm going to assume that the Parry worked, because even if I get a 1 it takes 1 from Bapp's roll, making it a fail...so instead, I'll say that with a 4-6 the staff survives the kick, 1-3 it breaks))

((Lorika? could you explain exactly how restricting it is to be stunned? I'da been out if it weren't for Parry))

...wouldn't all writers be dieties of their own worlds?
