At first, when Syrea stopped, Damien just kept right on walking. After all, he wanted to get rid of her, didn't he? She was just a little thorn in his side. Not that Damien knew the pain of a thorn. But after a while of his calm, paced walk, Dai couldn't help but look back at the filly. And she was talking now, denying stupidity and whatnot.
There the colt stood, debating whether he should go back and console her or simply leave her as she was. Honestly, from what he could tell of fillies, they took everything to extremes. 'Dumb' was just a word. Muttering his displeasure under his breath, he turned about and walked right back to Syrea. He didn't have anything better to do so might as well... "Geez. If you weren't dumb before you're dumb for taking it all so personally."
Who knows, this filly could provide him with what amusement he needed in this bland forest-home. "Yet? Who's to say you'll ever know everything about my secret Kingdom?" Getting right back up onto his high horse, Damien was bright and grinning as was his default composition.

Syrea shifted slightly again, face drawn into uncomfortable, unfamiliar lines. If she'd been a little bit more unsteady, she might have cried; instead, she just looked at him, an odd mixture of wonderment and disappointment in her face. There came that dumb word again, which apparently had all kinds of meanings and applications. She was dumb for not knowing what a king was, and now she was dumb for taking him seriously. Why wouldn't she take him seriously? He'd been joking?
Well, he wasn't very good at making jokes!
Pulling her bottom lip in, she chewed on it, brows drawing together slightly when he adopted the cocky posture of earlier. While she liked seeing the colt grinning, she couldn't help but feel it was a little mean. She didn't like when people were mean, though to date, she hadn't actually met anyone who was mean. Well, Einarr had been a little mean, but her momma said that was just because he was awkward and not because he was actually mean. She wished she didn't know what it was like to have someone be mean!
Mean was just... well, it was just not good!
Expelling a breath, she stomped a tiny hoof, tossing her head as she did. "I'm not dumb, I told you! Maybe y-you're the dumb one!"
There was tremor to her voice, and she blinked rapidly, beginning to stomp past him. Yeah, he was the dumb one, if he couldn't even realize that she wasn't dumb! She'd told him she wasn't dumb, hadn't she? But it didn't feel right being mean, either. She didn't want him to be mean, so she shouldn't be mean... but he'd been mean first.
Head swirling with all the confusion a day-old filly could muster, she looked over her shoulder, tossing back at him, "I'll find out all about that kingdom, too! J-just you wait! I'll get there!"
To her horror, she sniffled, and started stomping again. Though she muttered, she didn't realize how loud it was as she insisted, a little uncertainly, "I'm definitely not dumb."

Damien grew solemn again when she called him dumb. He went to the trouble of coming back, trying to be nice to her, and all he got was the name slapped right back on him! Pressing his lips tight together, he puffed out his chest once more for the sake of arrogance and huffed, "well, you're still gonna need the password, and I don't have to give it to a mean girl like you!"
Sure, he'd been mean first, but never, ne~ever could he fathom a reason for someone to be mean back! Keeping his composure, he fidgeted his wings, unsure of what to say now. Couldn't call her dumb again, that'd be a really lame comeback!
"And... And if you don't want to be my friend, that's just well and okay, because... Because I can just pick someone else to be my friend and come with me to the Sky Kingdom!" His nose turned up further skyward, at a 45 degree angle and to the side, which was perfect to show him Syrea's face out of the corner of his eye. Her toughness - what she had of it - seemed to have faltered a little and she was... She was sniffling? Well, that couldn't have been good! What if her parents heard her or something? Was her dad a big stallion? Dai's legs grew a little wobbly at the thought and he began his retreat by taking a few shaky steps backward. "D-don't cry!"

Oh, no! She'd forgotten about the password! The thought made her even more miserable, and she nearly lost it then and there. Oh, she was never getting to the Sky Kingdom if she didn't even have the password, and he was being so mean, and he wasn't going to help her out at all. And, wait, they were going to be friends? Since when? He didn't tell her anything! And she'd messed it all up by calling him dumb, when she didn't even think he was dumb!
Faltering, she looked down at the dirt, ashamed to see a couple of teardrops spatter between her hooves. Oh man, she didn't like this, what the heck was going on? Her stomach was twisting, her head hurt a little bit, and her eyes were burning. This was just not fun at all.
"I'm n-not crying!" She sniffled again, rubbing her face on her front leg. Was she crying? "Wh-what's crying?"
Spinning, evidence of tears clearly on her face, she blustered, "Y-you don't even want to be my f-friend, do you? 'Cause you think I'm dumb and who wants a d-dumb friend?"
Her ears flattened, and she tucked her wings against her sides, clearly miserable. "Sorry I called you dumb, I d-didn't mean it, I just don't like that word and you won't stop saying it."

"Ugh..." He voiced his displeasure quietly, so as to not send her bawling. But she was crying, alright. And she didn't know what crying was. Come on, crying was like, the first thing you learned as a foal, wasn't it? Maybe she really was dumb, but he wasn't about to call her such - at least not out loud - again.
"Crying," might as well explain it to her, "is what you're doing now. It's when you're sad and tears come out'a your eyes..." Might as well explain 'tears', too, she didn't sound like she knew much, "and tears are the water that comes out of your eyes when you're crying." How's that for all-knowing Sky Kingdom colt?
Of course she had to ask him what he thought of her. And he couldn't speak the exact truth now, could he? "Sure, I guess you'd be an okay friend... And I..." He had to say it so she would stop those damn tears, and he'd say it through gritted teeth if need be. "I-I'm sorry for calling you dumb..." Not exactly through gritted teeth, but as audible as a butterfly's flutter of wings.

There was still a little more sniffling to be done, but for the most part, Syrea cheered up at the explanation and apology. She liked knowing new things, and having it explained, it made sense. She was sad that she'd been called dumb, and it was normal to react this way. Crying wasn't something she wanted to spend a great deal of time doing, but at least she knew it was normal. Besides, he'd apologized. Offering him a weak smile, she said, "That's okay. I just came out of my basket today, you know, so there's a lot of stuff I don't know." She sniffled again, but this time, it was mostly to clear her nose. No more tears, thankfully. "I'll learn really fast, though." Edging closer, her smile transformed to a grin, ears perking toward him with interest. "So, about the Sky Kingdom--" "Syrea." Head whipping around, she looked up in surprise as Indah picked through the bushes, looking calm and tired as ever. Glancing between her new friend -- maybe? -- and the familiar face from the herd, she hesitated only a moment longer before whispering, "Bye," and trotting toward the older mare. Giving her a quick nuzzle, she swung her tail, looking back over her shoulder at Damien. Indah, too, looked at him, though if she had seen the exchange, she didn't say. Instead, she smiled faintly, saying, "Syrea can play more on another day." Her wings fanned lightly, and she said briefly, "See you later, Damien!" It had been fun, and certainly informative, but Syrea was glad to be heading home. Oh, man, she was going to have a lot of questions for her momma.
