Earendil choked on the food in his mouth, and it was a moment before he could breathe again. He stared at Senka, his eyes wide with shock.
"A baby?" he repeated incredulously. "What ... how? When?"
He was so shocked that he couldn't get anything more comprehensible out of his mouth.

While Senka wasn't old enough to know how normal this was, she was observate enough to figured this was their way of reproducing. It also explained why except for her owner none of the Winters children looked alike.
"That stupid bird brought it of course," Senka replied as if it was a matter of fact, "Just for her."

Earendil blinked and dropped his fork. "Bird?" he repeated stupidly. "What bird?"
What kind of bird brought children to people at random?

"THE bird!" Senka emphasised, "You know the stork?"
It hadn't occured to Senka that Earendil would have no idea because babies did not come from storks, or feathers, or vases, or even magical portals or cabbages from a garden. They came from people, which was completely different.
"You have to know about the stork it brings babies."

"Afraid I've never heard of it," Earendil admitted, his cheeks tingeing slightly red. "A bird brings babies to people in your world?"
He paused a moment, thoughtful, then asked, "To everyone? To people who are married? Who aren't? Who are in a relationship? Who aren't in a relationship?"

"I don't know," Senka shrugged, "But that grump with glasses, Donovan... he told her 'welcome to the circle of life' so it must be so."
Without Senka really realizing that the Winters clan was just odd that way. There had been only three recorded births (if one could call Yue's children that), in the entire clan.

As serious as the situation was, Earendil couldn't help but snicker at Senka's description of Donovan. He didn't see the man often, but he could definitely understand where Senka was coming from with it.
"So nothing else has happened since Lin went home?" he asked giving Senka a second piece of fish. "Nothing else new or out of the ordinary?"

"No, just the furball," Senka gladly accepted the other piece of fish.
"Senka...what have I told you about calling Miyuki a furball?"
Lin had just happened to walk in on that moment, unaware exactly how shocked Earendil had been or confused for that matter seeing as Senka didn't understand how weird her family was.
Granted at the moment Lin herself looked a bit odd, she was her usual short and somewhat serious self. Her taste in clothes had not changed, and while her hair was still long (she never managed to get that cut) it was held back nicely. The only thing out of place was the carrier which held the so-called 'furball'.

Earendil laughed and turned to see Lin as she entered the dining hall, and he waved at her, over his surprise now.
"I agree, it doesn't sound right for a child," he grinned at her. "I thought it was a pet when she first told me."
He pushed his chair back and headed over to Lin. He leaned over and hugged her and the baby together, squeezing her slightly before letting go again. "I'm glad you're back, Lin," he murmured warmly. "It's strange, you being gone now."

Lin chuckled, "Well it has been longer for you since I've been gone. I've only been gone for three days."
Though what a three days those were, Lin didn't think she would make it in time at all. There had been at the time just far too much to do.
"But I'm back, and ready for another trip. Shiro sends his apologies though, Ura didn't want to leave so soon and he and Ura can't be far apart." At that moment Miyuki chose to fuss, who was this new person who was here?

"Month and a half for us," Earendil told Lin; and it showed. His hair had been cut short again, his wardrobe replaced with new clothes. "It's been busy here, but it's not the same as it used to be."
He looked at Miyuki and smiled again, then held his hands out to her and said, "May I?"

She supposed after traveling for six years and mapping almost the whole time it would have seemed quite different. Seh was quite relieved though to know she hadn't been keeping them waiting for too long.
Lin chuckled as she reached in carefully and lifted Miyuki out of the carrier. She was careful not to be whamped by Miyuki's bushy tail as she handed the baby to Earendil.
"Here, watch the tail, I don't think she can control that yet."

Earendil grinned widely and took the baby carefully, holding her in the crook of one arm.
"She's beautiful," he murmured, his eyes shining warmly. "What is her name?"

"Miyuki," Lin replied.
She was smiling though, she was glad that Earendil thought so. Lin knew this was going to change the way she spent her time, and with her having almost grow up along side Earendil this also had the potential to change their friendship.

Earendil tapped the end of Miyuki's nose gently with the tip of his finger.
"Miyuki," he murmured softly, looking at her closely. "It's a pretty name. Does it mean anything in particular?"
His brain was still catching up with the idea of Lin having a baby, but it was a cute baby, and he could already feel her stealing his heart as well.
