GLBT LGBT are more prone to alcohol/tobacco/drug abuse as is, although familial support has been found to DRASTICALLY reduce this. Conclusion: it has more to do with being ostracized and self-hatred as a result of sexual orientation/gender identity than the orientation/identity itself. i've heard that, too. i guess i'm lucky that i haven't really done it. but then again, i care more about preserving my lungs for the zombie invasion and find other dangerous stress relievers. we're all different.

Zero Fail How is being gay or bisexual an alternative? I don't get it. This. Stating that homosexuality, bisexuality, transgenderism or anything in the spectrum of LGBT is an alternative lifestyle makes it sound like you choose to be gay/lesbian/whatever. If anything the only thing I use the term "alternative" as for an umbrella term to catergorize certain subcultures pertaining to punk, goth, and so on. "Alternative lifestyles" just sounds like some politically correct bullshit term politicians made up to be nice to the LGBT community while making it sound to homophobes that it's not the correct way to live.

I only smoke once in a blue moon (in other words I have to be kinda drunk or beyond stressed out) so I would say I am 90% of the time a non-smoker.
I actually do not notice a trend between smoking and sexuality but then again I prefer hanging out in non-smoking places (which in North Dakota is pretty much everywhere but a bar).

hmm I know a lot of my gay friends smoke, over 25 out of 50 smokes, but I don't think it's directly connected to being gay. More to having friends that smoke and whether you easily give in to peer pressure. I know different groups of gay people, one big group is from the local lgbt group and there almost everyone smokes. Then I know a lot of lesbians from sport and almost none of them smoke.
My straight friends are not a good for comparing since they're almost all from university or college. And well almost nobody smokes there. (When looking at law students a lot of them smoke but I don't have friends that study this)
I think there are a lot of factors for smoking, but I don't think being gay is a factor...

I agree. I do not believe that sexuality is to be a base consideration for alcohol/tobacco use. Many people just because they get addicted to nicotene, or they relieve stress about things in life, or some just do it because its socialable to their environment or environments that they put themselves in. The only relation to sexual orientation and alcohol/tobacco users is the factor that it is possible to be both, without relational reason to the one or the other. Its just a society effect thing.
