I feel that warm spring sun come strolling towards my window with a faint breeze coming through it's screen. I hear many sounds whispering in my ears. First, you hear the new born baby chicks yelping for their mother or their meal. Then, you hear flip flops cackling on the pavement. But the best sound is when on the nearby bay is waking up. The waves rolling and it's waters beloved creatures rising on the perfect day. I sometimes will even imagine Neptune's roar of laughter. I walk outside and stretch out my arms wide and tall and yawn. I see those same baby chicks chirping in glee and those same people with their flip flops cackling on the pavement. I walk towards the bay eyes open in amazement. The dolphins leap in the air, as if trained. The sharks fin circling, rising out of the water. In the distance, the familiar bellow of a blue whale laughing with Neptune. What a lovely, warm day. What do you call a day like this? Ah, yes. Spring.

Spring is the season between winter and summer. It's the time of year when life begins again in nature. In the Northern Hemisphere, spring begins on the day the center of the sun is directly over the equator. Usually, on March 20th, the sun crosses the equator and starts northward. As it travels north, its rays strike the northern countries more directly each day. Spring lasts until June 20 or 21.
In the Southern Hemisphere, spring begins in September and ends in December. Spring begins a few hours earlier in Leap Year.

Stories that didn't win:
Mystique Phoenix07 Wrote:
There was a cool crisp breeze flowing in the air. The window was obviously open. She opened her eyes and looked around the white room. It was spotless, as usual, with an assortment of gadgets and electrical appliances. Then, fully awake, she looked out the window. There was the tree. And the grass. And the sky. Always there. But today there was a different air. The outside world seemed fresh and new. A week ago, the snow had melted, and large, brown puddles had formed on the ground. Now, the ground was dry, as far as she could see it. Little green spurts of grass poked out from the ground, giving a speckled appearance to the otherwise barren ground. The tree, however, was still leafless. But the leaves will come, she thought. And she smiled. The new weather change made the girl restless. The bright new scene made her hungry, visually hungry. She wanted to touch the newness, which was like a delicate spring bud. Steadily, she slipped into her wheelchair, which was positioned next to her bed. Quietly, she moved herself outside. Outside was as she had envisioned: a free, relaxed, happy atmosphere. Breathing in air never felt as good as that first sip of the morning warmth. She blinked lazily and spotted a bird in one of the lower branches of the tree. Birds fly. That simple statement etched into her mind. Then that etch stretched deeper into her memory. There was a time when she knew how to fly, with her legs. She used to glide across meadows and dirt roads, her feet carrying her boundless, morning and evening, into the country. But then it happened. One day, she fell down. That did not discourage her. But it was troubling. There was no explanation for it. And then she continued flying. But the next day, she felt slightly faint. That was strange, too. What is it? her mom had asked. I feel different. Maybe I’m sick, she replied. Her mom placed a warm palm onto her forehead. You’re fine. Go back and play, was the response. But day after day, the girl’s energy seemed to decline more and more. Eventually the mother noticed. But that was only when she had finally collapsed, too exhausted and disturbed to run anymore. They went to the hospital. She needs to stay here, the doctor said. And it was so for four months already. The girl had remembered the red leaves at the beginning of her stay. Then they disappeared for most of the time, with the white snow replacing them with their strange pureness. But she was warm, and sheltered inside. Always. The whiteness outside seemed much different from the whiteness inside her room. The one outside seemed wild and changing. In fact, she wasn’t sure if the snow was in the same place everyday. But inside, it was the same. Always the same. Now, she was stronger. The natural outside encouraged her. Slowly, she raised herself with her arms, so that now she was in a standing position. She took one foot off the footrest and laid it so carefully on the ground. It was steady. Now, the other foot. That was successful, too. Now, to put one foot in front, one at a time. Steady, now. It was all about the moment. She was walking again. Finally, after 4 lonely months of waiting, she could walk. Encouraged, she tried to fly. Like a bicycle, it was slow and wobbly at first. But quickly, she re-mastered the art. She ran once, twice around the tree. It was almost like before. There was something lacking. But she did not care right now. Right now, she was content with the bliss of being able to use her legs again. There was a bird above her, chirping a sweet tune. She looked up at the tree, where it perched. But she could not find the bird. Instead, she saw a gleaming bright light from the sun above the tree. The light grew stronger, and it hurt to see. She averted her eyes on the ground. But it was gleaming too, for some odd reason. The chirping by now had become a harsh beeping tone. Then all around, the happy scenery and cool air were fading into the bright white light. Her legs did not feel attached to her anymore, and she could not move. Then she opened her eyes, staring up at the blank ceiling of the hospital room. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Loki was sitting obediantly on the front porch in the snow as his owners carried out several boxes. He was confused. For a young pup, he has the slightest idea about what was going on. He peeked inside to see the front room empty. He stared in awe as the father yelled for the kids to get inside the car. "Come on boys and girls! Time to load up and get out of here. Come on Loki. You're coming too, boy." The confused little pup tilted his head and pranced to the car. As they loaded everybody into the Toyota, Loki noticed something different about the baby. He was missing his favorite toy! The car was already going. He was full of sorrow. The baby wouldn't stop crying no matter what the parents did. Finally, the parents stopped at a gas station to get the necessities. Loki knew that this was his only chance. He grabbed a paper with the family's new address on it and darted out of the car door without the father noticing. Loki ran and ran. He ran many cities trying to get to the old house. He just wouldn't stop running. Loki knew that the thing the baby would want the most for Christmas was his favorite toy. So, he didn't stop. He didn't sleep. He didn't eat. He didn't do anything except run. About 4 days before Christmas, he arrived at the house. Luckily for him, the doggy door was still installed in the back door. He crawled through the opening and darted to the baby's old room. Loki scooped up the little doll in his mouth with the piece of paper. He began to run again. He kept running. He didn't want to give up. Loki knew that the child would love him forever for the return of his toy. Loki was almost there on Christmas Eve. It was snowing and the puppy was growing weary. He slowed down with each step that he took. Until he finally layed down in the snow. The soft blanket made every inch of his body shiver. He was freezing and hungry. Loki then closed his eyes very slowly. Then, he heard music. He hardly opened his eyes and saw twinkling Christmas lights. They were glowing and warming him. Suddenly, a shadow drifted over him. Loki began whimpering helplessly. "There, there little pup. Everything will be ok. I won't hurt you." The stranger picked up the lost dog. His hands seemed to give warmth throughout Loki's whole body. He felt strong again. His eyes shot open revealing that it was all a mirage. His body was still tingling with warmth. He began running again to the address on the paper. Loki finally arrived. He scratched helplessly on the wooden door. It opened. "Hello?" Loki barked at the shadow standing in the doorway. "My lord! Everyone! Loki is home! He has come home!" The father was overjoyed. The whole family ran to the door. They all were very ecstatic. "What's this?" The father took the toy and piece of paper from Loki's dried mouth as the family lead him in for food and water. "Well I'll be darned. He took this paper and ran all the way home for the baby's toy. He's a true hero." And with that, Loki was home. The family was one and Loki was dubbed a hero.

'It smells like spring.' She shook the thought from her head as she walked past newly bloomed cherry blossom tress. She was out near the mountains in Japan, far from her home in sunny California. Only one person could could bring her here, back to all these memories. Her brother. If the rumors were to be believed Alex was tightly wound in with a drug dealing gang, moving out to the mountains to avoid the cops. A sudden wind shook the tress and as cherry blossoms drifted to the ground, she remebered. The good time her family had in Japan, espcially during spring. All the festivals, the smiles, and laughs came back to her. But she remebered what took them away too, she remebered that all too well. She remebered her and Alex siting in the ambulance waiting, waiting for them to bring their parents out of the house. They never did. The fire had consumed them and with them all the happy times. Yuri came back to reality as her brother opened the door sweeping her into a hug, pulling her through the strangely neat house. He left her in the living room to get them drinks. She looked around, pictures of him with some bad looking people who were smiling, a wide-screen t.v, and a picture of him with Yuri. They talked for hours until it got dark, Yuri whispered, "Im so sorry." Before Alex could respond, she had plunged the knife through his heart. Pulling it out she wiped it on a piece of cloth she had with her and left the house taking all evidence she'd ever entered with her. Yuri pulled out her cell with tears flowing heavily down her face, she called her agency. She had completed her mission. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Everything starts somewhere... flowers from buds, bears from cubs, humans from babies, everything had a beginning including an end.
My lover died when I was 15, springtime, 3 years have passed and I dread the bright blue skies, the color, everyones happiness. I've fallen into darkness, never have I looked back and smiled... never. Something happened though, like a chemical reaction to the sky above me, it pulled me out of that darkness like nothing happened and I was... happy? Was that what the emotion was called?
Late spring, "Eliza! Your to slow!" A tall teen called after the short brown curly haired girl. They were running towards the mall, he was a bouncy eager one with his crystal blue eyes, athletic, something she wasn't. Almost every girl in high school liked him, why did he like her? She was nothing special, she didn't even like him. He stopped and looked down at her, his eyes... filled with love, "You need to get into shape little girl." He smiled... his smile.. She blushed and looked away, still gasping for air, she spoke between gasps for breath, "Jaden... Can't you just... walk?!" He laughed at her, his hand rested on her back and pulled her to his side, "Nope." He began to walking looking forwards into the building as he spoke, "I just want to have fun... with you." Again she blushed, Eliza didn't understand why her face was red all the time over him. They weren't dating, were never friends until one day he just... simply came up to her and said he loved her. She didn't like it, "Can we have fun that wont kill me?" They passed the easter bunny, picking up little kids... still? Things were strange to her, she didn't understand them or come to grasp they're meaning to the world. He, who was still pulling her along, was smiling and chipper. It seamed he could never be sad, everything in the world was just happiness to him. "I would never want to kill you." He pulled her into a video game store... he was trying to kill her. Bubbly little nerdish boys ran around the room, it was strange for them to see a girl. Jaden released his grip of Eliza and ran towards the store clerk, he looked back at her, "Just look around i'll be done before you know it." Eliza sighed, she strolled down the isles of game consoles and games, one isle had a little boy, no more then the age of 6. He stared at her then ran away to his father, the 6 year old was scared, she looked at her appearance, a black coat that draped down past her hips, dark blue skinny jeans, with all black converse, her hair was a mess, and eyes covered in black make-up. To a child she seamed rather frightening. She looked over at Jaden, he was the opposite of her, always in a hollister t-shirt, baggy blue pants, and flip-flops. He looked over at her and smiled, his smile... so warm. She shivered, he looked over and shouted, "Almost done!" 5 minutes later he was done and they were leaving the mall, Eliza didn't mind. Most girls spend hours in the mall, she didn't like going. She sat down in the passenger seat of Jaden's car, he drove off. Passing his house, passing her house, she was confused, "Where are we going?" "You will see." He spoke softly but sternly. He didn't look at her.
The sun was setting as she looked out the window, pink with purple streaks soaring across the sky, it was beautiful. The car stopped. Outside the window was a field, bare with nothing around it instead a little hill with a willow tree resting on top. He got out the car walked around and opened her door, she looked at him confused, "What are we doing here?" "Just wait." Jaden cracked a smile and pulled her out of the car. A bag was in his left hand and in his other was her hand. They reached the top of the hill, he placed the bad down, there was a faint breeze. He sat down and looked up at the sky. "3 years." Jaden looked down and sighed. "You know what the last words Mogi said to me?" Eliza sat down next to him, her heart raced as her past lovers name was said, "Take care of her. He never told me to... love you." He looked at her, the fading sun with the newborn stars shown in his eyes. "He wanted you to be happy, no matter what happened. He passed away and do you think he would like to see you to this day... depressed." Eliza didn't know what to say and listened to Jaden continue. "Spring was his favorite season, yet you hate it I remembered when you had color to your face." He leaned closer to her and brushed her hair back, "Eliza... Be happy." Her heart raced as he leaned forward, with wind breezed chilling her skin once again, "Live..." a familiar voice called to her, it wasn't Jaden's. He was an inch away from her face, she met him the rest on the way. Their lips met, his scent overwhelmed her, she came to realize with each passing moment she was living like a shell, hallow and cold. Thru this kiss she came to grasp that her life was like the earth. Thru the winter her body was lifeless but as the season changed her heart opened up to something beautiful and warm. Even when the season change and it is back to winter she will be happy, knowing her past lover, Mogi, wanted it so. The End.

Lenna the Whale
There once was a witch by the name of Annel. Annel disliked her name, hated her family (they disliked her as well) and extremely disliked the magical school she was attending. Her school was called Chancers and was in the middle of Australia. Annel was so fed up with her school that, one spring night she left. Her leaving was actually very well planned out and she had gathered her supplies the previous nights. Her plan was to be become an animagi, or to be able to turn into a certain animal at will. She only took a few items with her; a spellbook, her wand, some food, and a few potion ingredients including gillyweed. The only gap in her plan was that she did not know what she wanted to become. She left on her broom thinking about what to become, she figured she had to start somewhere and would try swimming first. At the coast of Australia she landed and ate some of the gooey gillyweed. Then she dove into the ocean taking only her wand with her. She swam and swam, but soon she felt the effects of the gillyweed wearing off, so she reluctantly emerged from the water and dried off. but now she knew what she wanted to become, she wanted to become a whale. She ate the remaining gillyweed and tied the rest of her supplies to her leg. She swam out some distance and cast the spell. She immediately transformed into a beautiful orca whale. Annel, called Lenna ever since she became a whale, lived as a whale for four years. Though she was now no longer under her parent's control she felt no need to shift back to her human form, until she met an angel fish called Reese (formerly known as Eseer). Lenna and Reese became such good friends that they told each other secrets that they had never told anyone before. Then one day Lenna let it slip that she was an animagi, not a whale. Reese just swam there, mouth open. Lenna started babbling an apology about how sorry she was that she hadn't told him earlier, but Reese stopped her and said the reason he was so surprised was because he too was an animagi. He actually was a 19 year-old wizard that had become an animagi two years earlier. So shocked at their similarities they grew even closer. Then one day Lenna said she had started missing dry land, Reese said that he had been feeling the same way. But neither wanted to return to their previous home of Australia. So they swam together to England where they spent the rest of their days together living as a wizarding family. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Emily
The girl squealed joyfully as she ran through the trees. The boy behind her, somewhat taller, laughed with a deeper voice. They sprinted through the woods, leaping over logs and ferns, laughing and running, running and laughing. The tall pines towered over them, swaying slightly in the summer breeze. The hot sun beat down onto the trees, which shielded the boy and the girl as they played in the forest. Birds scattered, cawing in disgust as they were disturbed from their midday nap, swooping into the air to find another perch to sit on. They ran on, weaving through the trees and laughing. The girl leapt over a log, catching her skirts on one of the branches, and tumbling to the floor. She yelped as she landed, falling into a large fern. She laughing as she turned over, groaning slightly as she saw the state of her everyday out-and-about dress, covering in long mucky green stains, and splodges of muck. Her mother was a clean woman. “Are you ok?” panted William as he caught up. “Oops... Mother will kill me...” The boy laughed as he saw her dress. She shot him a sour look. “Don’t worry Emily, it’ll be fine.” He held out a hand and grinned widely. She smiled as she pulled herself up on it. Standing in front of him in the dull light, Emily looked at his face properly for the first time in, well, years. He had deep brown eyes, the kind that look like if you tipped forward you would fall into the deep abyss of them. His tousled dark, brown hair was untidy, but it suited him, in a way. Since the last year or so, he’d become more handsome, his slightly pale face becoming more manly rather than his filled out face of before. Emily smiled. Yes. William was nice. Not to mention his smile. It light up the day, she thought. Perhaps it was the only thing that kept Cartdale alight, William’s smile. She grinned back, attempting to copy his crooked style of grin, and he laughed. “You funny lass, what’re you doing?” He smiled as he placed his hand on the side of her face. She almost jumped away at it, as his touch was replaced by a tingling, as if someone was pressing blunt needles onto her flushed face. He pulled away his hand and coughed gruffly. “Better get you home, Miss Kensington?” He bowed with a mock posh accent and picked her up. She squealed out loud, laughing as he put her on his back. Snorting like a horse, he galloped down the track back to the village, holding her feet, so as not to drop her. She giggled loudly and wrapped her arms around his neck. “You are most certainly my best friend William horse.” He laughed with a certain mock whinny about it, and Emily laughed. Life was good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pandora
She knew what needed to be done. It would be long, hard, and boring, but the day after Easter had always meant spring cleaning in the O’Brian household; and now that Melissa had moved off into her own house, things were no different. It was ten o’clock before Melissa tied her curling red hair up in a tight pony tail and headed for the storage closet in her basement. It was filled to the brim with cardboard boxes containing what used to be her favorite things, but had long since been pushed aside for better, more interesting, things. She pulled out the first box, a heavy thing that nearly knocked the young woman down, and set it on the floor. Armed with a box cutter, she tore it open, putting the contents into one of three piles: keep, garage sale, and trash. Melissa pulled out one of the books. “The Invisible Man, why the heck do I own this piece of literary junk?” She tossed it into the Garage Sale pile, hoping to make some money off of someone else’s bad taste in literature.
The hours passed slowly as Melissa went through box after box, working her way to the back of the closet. By six, she was down to the last box. It was an old box that the red-head didn’t recognize, with DO NOT OPEN scrawled in heavy black sharpie, though the letters were faded with age and the tape that once securely held the box closed was peeling up. “What on Earth?” Melissa pulled the box out into the light. It was small and had a picture of an old music box printed on it. It couldn’t have weighed more than a pound or two. She slid her fingers under the edge of the lid and pulled the box open. Inside rested an ornately carved, wooden music box surrounded by old, yellowed news paper. Melissa’s heart pounded in her ears as she pulled the music box from the cardboard. The moment seemed almost magical as she held the box in her hands. It was so light, as if it was filled helium and simply wanted to float away. The lid came off easily in her trembling hands. She could only gasp as she looked into the little box. And that gasp was all that was needed to awaken the little creature inside. Reptilian black eyes met awed green eyes.
The police never could explain how Melissa O’Brian turned to stone. Nor could they explain the significance of the little wooden music box in her stone hands. The most mysterious part: a note scrawled in the careful hand of days long since passed, proclaiming ‘No one remembers Pandora.’

When the eggs were covered with nuclear material, they became evolved eggs! They soon took over the world because there were about 100,000 eggs that evolved. After this, everyone including Bob became slaves to the eggs. As I woke up,I looked out the window. There was no longer a blanket of snow lying on the ground. All the snow had melted and the rabbits came out of their burrows and played on the grass.A few birds were flying in the sky with the sun shining on their wings. They looked so beautiful.I laid my head at the window sill.I was still tired and fell asleep. When my mom woke me up,the rabbits were still there and two men planted four tall trees. The day was nearly gone. The sun was going down and it began to get dark.I started to walk away from the window but I had one more look before hopping into bed again. The rabbits were lying down on the grass. They were so tired after a day of playing outside in a new season. spring time
Those days in the summer, when days were long and nights were short... Lita would yell, "Higher, Spencer, higher!" with a cute little giggle when she soared upwards on the wooden swing. The oak tree supporting it had been there for as long as the children could remember, and, they hoped, for many years more. Spencer was a shy little boy, but very polite. He said 'please' and 'thank you;' often Spencer was the one to teach Lita her manners. He had learned them well, being eight years old, while his friend had much to learn at six. The two inseparable friends could stay for hours at the oak tree, and Spencer never even asked once for his turn to swing. He was happy watching Lita's long, red hair flow beautifully behind her as the swing glided forward and up. He had blond hair himself, but wished his was as nice to look at as Lita's. Their favorite thing about the swing, was the incredible field of flowers that lay just out of view when standing on the ground. But when that swing burst into the sky, the sight was breathtaking. To Spencer and Lita, it had symbolized their lasting friendship, as the tree did. They had both been present for as long as their little minds could recall. Life was wonderful like this. In this particular, wide-open village, there was no school. Children were taught by their parents, and everyone who could made money by growing and harvesting fruit. Lita's family farmed peaches, while Spencer's farmed blackberries. Spencer often called Lita his "Little Peach." In response, Lita would cry, "You're my Little Blackberry!" and the two would turn pink with laughter. One afternoon, while the days were still long and hot, Lita sat alone on the wooden swing, staring at her feet which were dangling in the air. She sat motionless, a very slight wind ruffling the tips of her strawberry hair. A peach lay by the swing, nestled peacefully in the lush grass below it. Spencer had been working at his family's blackberry farm that day, and hurried to the oak tree upon finishing his work. Approaching the little one from behind carrying a pad of paper he had picked up, Spencer caught a glimpse of a small cut on her left hand, which tightly gripped the swing's rope. He let his eyes rest on her head for a moment longer, and slowly reached up to lay his hand on hers. His heart skipped a beat as Lita threw her head back at the surprise. Her now upside-down nose was pink and her face was streaked with nearly dried tears. At the realization of who it was, the little girl snapped her head forward and continued to stare at her toes. Spencer circled the wooden swing and faced Lita, kneeling down to eye-level. He frowned and his grass-green eyes glistened with fake tears, hoping to cheer his companion up with his silly expression. Realizing that it was useless, he lifted her head up. "What's the matter, Peach?" he asked softly. In response, she jerked her head away from his hand and tucked it into her chest, with a slow shake of her head and a small, audible sigh. "You have a cut on your hand, Lita." The girl shook her head again. Upon receiving no reply after two more attempts, there was only silence. Spencer sat in front of the swing, his eyes fixed on his friend. Suddenly, Lita burst into tears and leaped forward with her torso. Her arms wrapped around Spencer's neck, and she buried her head in his chest. He could feel small tears dripping onto his buttoned shirt. "I missed you, Blackberry," Lita sobbed. Her voice, usually so sweet and giggly, was now hoarse with the day's crying. Spencer's eyes glistened once again, but this time, it wasn't to cheer her up. With a quivering sigh, Spencer murmured to her, "Little Peach, did you miss me?" "I waited for you," came the muffled reply. "I sat on the swing all day because I thought you would be here." Spencer's breath hitched. "All day? You did eat, didn't you?" He waited for the reply, worried that the little girl had skipped eating for him. Lita sniffed and sobbed, tightly gripping the front of the boy's shirt. After a moment of waiting, she replied, "My mommy was calling me, but I didn't answer because I didn't want to leave in case you came... Are you mad at me?" Spencer threw one arm around the girl's back, and the other around to rest his hand on her soft, red hair. He squeezed her gently. "I'm not mad, but Peach, you really need to eat something." Spotting the peach below the swing once more, he let go of his friend. He picked up the fresh peach and brushed off bits of grass, inspecting it for dirt. Lita wiped her eyes and turned her head towards him. Spencer held out the peach to her and grinned. "A peach for my Peach?" he laughed. With reluctance, the child snatched the fruit from his hand and bit into it ravenously. Spencer wiped off the juice from her chin and tasted it. It tasted of summer. Lita held the peach back out to him. "Wanna share?" Her voice was sweet again as she cradled the fruit in her hand. "Thank you." Spencer took it from her hand and bit into it. They shared the peach until it was all but devoured. When it was time to go home, Spencer gave a very drowsy Lita a piggyback ride home, and on the way, he said to her, "I promise you'll always be my best friend, and I'll always take care of you."

Summer had ended. Autumn came, and the fruits had begun to wilt. Leaves turned a beautiful orange, yellow, and red. This was the time the families had to work all day to harvest any surviving fruits that had made it, before winter set in. The season came and went all too fast. Winter arrived. Most of the fruit farms have died, and there were eventually no leaves on the peach tree; the blackberry vines had almost completely disappeared. The only fruits that survived in this village were the strawberry guavas and the pomegranates. They were the strongest fruits grown in the village, able to survive frost, heat, and neglect. The owner had, in fact, passed away twenty years before. Yet, the beautiful fruit was still blooming. Their oak tree had survived as well, but the flowers below had all wilted and the scene looked entirely different. No longer was it the serenity that accompanied the children's friendship. Spencer often stayed inside with his family and wrote during this period. He had begun writing after the last day of summer, but he hadn't shown anyone his story. It was about Lita, and he love writing it. He often spent whole days with a pencil in his hand, curled up in any place he could find. Lita had caught a cold. Fortunately, she was a tough girl and it was only minor, however, it made Spencer worry all the same. He would attempt to sneak out of his house some days and try to visit her. All she could do was get up from where she was laying down and stare with glazed eyes out the window at him. It made Spencer only think of the fact that they couldn't be together. He had promised her they would always be best friends and that he would care for her; what was he to do now? His mind drew a blank, standing before the girl's house yet again. For now, the little boy, dressed in only a tshirt and brown shorts, raised his hand and wiped the window before him. The fog only cleared a little, but it was much better if he got to see Lita's face. Upon seeing the pink cheeks and soft, blue eyes, Spencer smiled sadly. What could he do for her? He looked behind him. Lita's house was next to the strawberry guava tree, which was abandoned long ago. He spotted a strong little one, hanging by a thread on one of the branches. Shuffling through the long, freezing grass, Spencer reached up and grabbed the fruit. He breathed on it to warm it, and made his way back to the window. Lita was standing in the same place, looking very tired. The little boy gingerly held the fruit against the glass with one hand and smiled slightly. With his other hand, he ran his fingers on the fog-covered glass to make one word. "Peach?" was neatly written backwards so that Lita could read it. Upon seeing that this fruit was clearly not a peach, her sickly face had turned into a bright one, silently giggling behind the glass in such a cute way that Spencer had laughed, too. His legs were quivering from the cold, but he wanted to stay here with his Little Peach. The two drew on the windows to communicate; Spencer with his fingers, and Lita with a marker she had found. Undoubtedly, she would be scolded by her parents, but this time was too precious to worry about such a thing. No two best friends could be apart for that long. After a week or two of Spencer visiting Lita daily in the cold, his parents found out. He was kept inside and allowed out only once to tell Lita of the news. Upon hearing it, her face returned to the sad, tired one seen at their first meeting at the window. Spencer returned home and stayed inside once more, for the rest of winter. The season was long. Everyone stayed inside, but Lita sometimes stared out the window to see if Spencer would come. He didn't. It was a long, lonely winter. When would spring come?
~ ~♥~ ~
A series of excited knocks came on the wooden door to Spencer's house. "Spencer! It's the first day of spring! Let's go play!" Outside stood a wiggling Lita, her hair tied to the side in a loose ponytail, which hung down her shoulder. She carried a small pouch over her shoulder. The girl knocked energetically with a huge grin on her face, and waited for someone to answer. After a few short moments, Spencer opened the door, peeked his head out, and at once recognized the little visitor. Spencer shoved the door open and leaped towards Lita. He hugged her once and took her hand, leading her towards the oak tree. They ran past the flourishing fruit trees and vines, and past the strawberry guava tree. The little tough fruit had kept the two going through the long, freezing winter, and they were grateful. Arriving at the tree, the two came to a stop. Spencer turned to face Lita, laughing in happiness. He led her by the hand to the wooden swing, but the girl stopped him and took a place in front of him. He stood, looking down at her bright, smiling face. She was digging through her pouch; Spencer saw that it was full of fruit. "What are you looking for, Pe--" Spencer was cut off as a small, bright red fruit was pushed towards his face. Lita giggled and, as Spencer focused his eyes on the fruit, he saw that it was a strawberry guava like the one he had brought to her at the window. After showing him the small little survivor, Lita pulled out another, larger fruit. "A pomegranate?" Spencer asked aloud. He had noticed, though, when he held both fruits in each hand, that they were almost exactly the same in looks. Suddenly, he understood what his little peach had been trying to say. The pomegranate and strawberry guava-- they were the children themselves. After a moment of staring at the fruit, Spencer spoke. "Well," he laughed, "now I have a new name to call you. Strawberry Peach." "No fair!" protested the girl, laughing while she said it. "I never have a nickname for you, Spencer!" Laughing, the boy led Lita to the wooden swing, and set her on the plank. Before circling the swing to give her the first push of the spring, he was caught by surprise as Lita wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him once on the cheek.
