Somali’s will rule the world~:
Proposed Name of child: Mercury
Gaian user name: Syusaki
Prompt NUMBER: 1
Response: Mercury liked to consider himself the most adventurous out of the litter. He had inherited his father’s tendency to wander (wandering as in adventuring and flirting, unfortunately) and he was always looking for the next interesting place to crash in for the day.
Of course, that brought him a lot of hassling from his paranoid parents. Something about getting caught by a weirdo facility run by some bizarre humans? The kitten scoffed at the thought. Mercury may just be a young kit, but he was a wily one. He was well-versed in the ways of wriggling his way out of trouble, metaphorical or not. Besides, humans were nice and ditzy, just like the students that attended the University! He was far from worried about getting caught on his explorations.
“Mercury, should you really be going so far away from the University on your own?” echoed one of his siblings as the rest of the litter worriedly followed the adventurous Somali.
He hopped onto a fallen tree and whirled around to face his brothers and sisters, grinning and his golden eyes mischievously glimmering. “I’m not going to get caught by some humans, alright?” The boy was completely unaware of the shadows looming over the group of kittens. “So don’t worry your pretty little heads an—Hey!”
Strong, firm hands scooped up the kitten like it was nothing. Mercury squirmed in the human’s clutches, his protesting yowls mingling with the meows and shrieks of his siblings.
Golden irises blankly stared through the cold glass of his new prison. How long had he been lying here, longing for freedom and the taste of fresh air? Perhaps if he had been free to wander as he pleased he would have been more excited and admire the colorful birds and paw at the shimmering fishes. All the sights and smells were exotic and in normal circumstances his curiosity would be on fire.
His tail swished back and forth like a darting snake while his ears twitched from the scuffling and mumbling of the other kittens in the background. A disgruntled sigh and Mercury got to his paws, shaking off the loose scraps of paper that clung to his fur. This wasn’t a regular situation, but that didn’t mean he should be wallowing in self-pity.
Suddenly renewed with a sense of hope he whirled around so he could pounce his siblings, but was met with a pile of cowering, shivering felines that he had never seen in his short life. Baffled, Mercury spun in circles in a vain attempt to search for a brother, a sister, any of his family.
Goddamn. How long had he been a depressed idiot?
“Hey, you. Any one of you,” he snapped at the kittens piled to one side of the glass cage. They all tensed as one and huddled to each other more closely, large, fearful eyes cautiously staring at him.
A scowl and a sigh. “Speak up already!” hissed Mercury, his temper rising by the second. He wanted to escape, but he needed answers first.
Eventually, the group of kits pushed out a particularly small cat that had curly fur and a large tail. “Um . . . y-yes?” It spoke in a high voice, undeniably female.
“I came here with my siblings. Where are they?”
“S-Siblings . . . ?”
“Yes. Fluffy tails. Orange and brown fur? Ring any bells?” If she was more confident with herself perhaps Mercury wouldn’t have been so snippy.
She squeaked, her face turning a bright shade of flustered red. “E-Eh. I have. They all got taken by humans over the past day or two. I w-wouldn’t be surprised if you got taken any moment now either.” Without another word she hurriedly merged back to the crowd of kittens that gladly welcomed her.
He stared after her for a few seconds before scoffing and turning his back to the group, disgusted at their cowardly behavior, purebred or not.
Mercury placed his face against the cool, smooth texture of the glass, hoping to conjure up an escape plan.
“I-I hope you don’t think y-your weight will tip the c-cage over.”
He didn’t bother to look back, remembering the voice of the timid kitten from minutes before. “Trying to be witty now, are you?” Mercury dryly commented.
“It’s just that . . .” He could imagine her shyly twiddling her thumbs. “W-We’ve tried a lot of ways already. Digging a hole. Climbing the glass. Escaping out of a human’s hands when they take us out. They haven’t worked.”
She sounded more confident now, and that got Mercury grinning. “Then you just didn’t do it in the right way. Let the master show you how it’s done.” A cocky smirk graced his face as he turned to stare at her while she softly smiled back.
Mercury felt a familiar presence towering over him and he looked up just as human hands wrapped themselves around his body, effortlessly picking him up. Unlike the previous time, he blankly stared up at the human and then the shrinking figure of the could-have-been friend.
He didn’t think humans were so naïve anymore.
Anything else?: I wantz me a Hitler kitty!
