She had to remind herself to keep standing though his words threatened to make her sway with relief, a tired smile of her own pulling at a corner of her muzzle even as she dipped her head. "I will not mind." No, no, all the better to watch over him and make sure he would be all right. Still shaking herself off, shivering in the air, the mare pulled herself free from the stream and glanced over her shoulder for the kirin. She would allow him to lead, of course.

When she did not retract her statement, he accepted the response by starting off in a random direction, not certain where the more flavorful food was hiding, but at least willing to step out to find it. He hadn't lied: the pace he set was not the same, racing ease that he'd displayed at the beach, his joints protesting every time the pressure was greater than their worn state could bear. But the more he walked, the better it became, his hurts sealing with soft scabs made more flexible by the plant Laurelin had brushed them with. When they came to a particularly green grove, his sudden stop nearly sent him tumbling into the dirt, a quick extension of his leg and a masking smile in her direction saving at least some face. The grasses billowed serenely around them, high enough that he barely had to bend his head before he could begin tearing them with his flat teeth, the tiny burst of taste reassuring him that he'd found a prime location. A colorful overhead of dangling bulbs attracted his notice in short order, and he considered them pensively up in their homey little branches, wondering if his tail would stretch long and knock a few of them down. He glanced behind him to the fey creature, wondering if she would disapprove of fruit-snatching as she had of thorn-smashing.

She kept close to his side desite his pace, ready to lend him her aid if he asked, but not before. She'd fussed over him enough for the moment, she supposed, and though ever instinct was on protective overload, she had enough tact to keep herself quiet and respectful. Her sudden stop made her jolt with surprise, quickly trying to return the smile he offered while still looking casual. Once satisfied that he would begin eating, the mare stepped a few feet away from him, enjoying the way the plant life tickled at her sides in greeting. His glance was received with a soft, if encouraging whicker, and she folded her limbs underneath her, curling up within the tall grass while still watching him from the corner of her eye.

Whether or not she understood what he was angling at, the amber-banded male took her expression for one of preemptive forgiveness. He strained his tail up, feeling the metallic links at the base spreading in calm acceptance, the only part on him that was not suffering from a scratch or some other kind of impairment. It took a while for him to hit one of the red globes, several swings and misses making him wonder if maybe there wasn't a better way when he caught a side and it wobbled teasingly before dropping to the ground. Eagerly seizing up his prize, he had already taken a hearty chunk out of it by the time he remembered her presence in the long blades, crunching up the sweet flesh in his mouth before lightly picking it up between his teeth. He smoothed a path through the waving landscape to where she lay, releasing the bitten thing near her legs with a contrite nod of his head. As an afterthought, he nudged it with a hoof so that the side that wasn't already contaminated with his bitemarks would be at her disposal, his sore tail giving a faint wag of confidence. It was not, he had to remind himself immediately to keep from losing nerve, any sort of lasting gift. No pearl or precious stone, waxy and fresh though the surface of it appeared to be. To be fair, he had already ruined its perfection, but she needed to eat something as well, rather than watching like a nursemaid as her ward tested solids for the first time.

She watched him curiously for quite a while, easily figuring out his intentions. No, she didn't mind; everything had a cycle, and fruits were made to be eaten. How else would they be able to spread their seeds? A smile flickered across her face, pleased when he finally managed to dislodge the treat, though it quickly faded to surprise as he strode towards her and offered the fruit as an apparent gift. Her eyes were a little wide with surprise, and she immediately ducked her head down with a humble sort of gratitude, glancing up at him long enough to smile again even as her heart swelled "...Thank you." She'd take it delicately, savoring its sweetness after a few, delicate bites.

He was clearly as satisfied with her acceptance as she'd been with his initial offering, a gradual, gratified smile overtaking his own muzzle while he studied the mouse-sized dents her nibbling left. She was polished in speech as well as gesture, something that he normally prided himself in, but was shipwrecked from now. Yet he was unnaturally fond of learning it in another, even when he contrasted it against her high, shrieking laughter and darting coyness on the beach, too many layers to select which one he appreciated best. A moment and he eased himself down beside her, picking the grass from the roots now as he continued his gluttonous streak to lessen the ferocity of whatever beast had been introduced to his innards. Some decimated stalks later, he was drowsy and stuffed, his meager belly refusing anything more until it had a chance to absorb what had already been taken.

If surprised when he, too, lay down, she did not show it, munching quietly on the remains of the fruit until only the core and seeds remained. Hopefully they would scatter and bring new life, though if they did not, it was mere fate. Her gaze was fond even as she allowed it to wander over him, unconsciously craning her neck forward so she could lip a few tangled stalks from his mane, settling once more when she was satisfied. With any luck he would sleep, and she would carefully watch over him until he chose to rouse again.
