If there was anything that Topher couldn't handle, it was awkward silences. He hated them with a passion especially when he didn't know how to break them. Another second passed and he was compelled to stuff the rest of the tart into his mouth despite the size just so he would have a reason not to talk but...that was a lot of chocolate tart. He settled on taking another very Topher sized bite, chewing his way through his thoughts of what to say to her. Honestly, he hadn't meant for her to misinterpret the statement. It wasn't in his nature to try and make her freeze up like that. Was she overacting or had his comment really been out of line?

Surprisingly enough, that bite of tart didn't last forever and he was forced back into the awkward situation he'd found himself in from the beginning. An uneasy laugh finally left him as he swallowed. "Well, I know your Dad loves you. I was just saying that parents like to do that I guess. No harm done or anything..." At least he hoped there wasn't any harm done. Causing Yvette's little mind melt wasn't too hard but he knew bringing her back to a topic she could talk about was pretty tough if you didn't know how to do it. He didn't even know how to do it. Every time she spoke more than a phrase was a bit of a learning experience for him. Sadly, the lesson for today was how to shut her up indefinitely.

Topher starred down at the tart in his hands as he tried to think of something else to say. "So...what are your parents like anyway? You've met mine and I don't really know anything about yours..."

"Ummm..."

The girl at least seemed to be trying to move past the mental hurdle she had set up for herself.

"Uh..."

Her eyes drifted to her cookie again, and soon enough it was back up to her lips, teeth delicately gnawing on it for a moment as she thought over how to respond to the new question. The first description she could think of resulted in her pulling the treat away from her mouth so she could talk without distorting her voice with cookie-mouth.

"...w-well... Mommy is a jeweler... she's actually quieter than me."

Yes, it was possible to be quieter than Yvette Weaver apparently.

"She doesn't like too much excitement. She likes doing quiet things, like reading and crocheting."

There was another pause so that she could nibble on that cookie again while she attempted to pin a decent description of her Daddy without scaring the hell out of her friend. If Topher was a girl, it would have made things easier. Topher, unfortunately, was a boy. And unfortunately, Daddy had a big problem with boys.

A very big problem. She thoughtfully glanced over the display of treats, as if trying to distract herself from the current task by debating which treats she would attack next. Of course, it would probably take her an hour to get through all of the food she could scoop up, so it was better to take each treat one at a time. Like a cat in an unfamiliar setting, she edged towards the treats, eventually sneaking a plate and gathering up a white chocolate brownie. She paused in place for a moment, locating the chocolate tarts, but then stopped.

Oh, right! Topher's question!

"...and then there's Daddy... um... Daddy's a big guy. He's a construction worker. He believes in the only type of good work being the sort you have to use your body for. And... um..."

There was a long pause as she gulped in a bit of air.

"...Daddy doesn't like me hanging out with boys..." That was the light version of the actual scenario.

A person that was more quiet than Yvette? That was definitely the shock of the century! He couldn't help but wonder how that was even possible. Was she mute? She had to be mute. Maybe she did take after her father after all. It was a wonder she even spoke at this rate.

"She sounds...nice." Nice felt like such a cop-out for the boy who could talk you to death but it was better than absolute silence from him. Though he had no idea about the whirlwind he's started. Knowing absolutely nothing about her father, he expected the usual. 'He's a nice guy' or 'He loves me a lot' or even 'He can get a bit angry at times' but not what he'd heard.

He didn't like boys...

Topher starred down at the tart, confused by the sudden revelation. "He really doesn't like you with boys?" The teen lightly squeezed the half eaten tart in his hands, only stopping when a bit of the filling spilled over his thumb. "Then...could you get in trouble for being with me now?" Yvette getting in trouble was definitely something he didn't want to cause. That wouldn't do at all. He'd feel way too guilty to do that to her.

Hopefully Mr. Weaver would never find out about her little Valentine's day outing considering that this was his house and he most certainly was a boy last time he checked.

Her eyes had managed to find her plate. And they were now lingering there, almost frozen upon her white chocolate brownie. The boy was reacting as most boys would if they found this out. Surprise, shock, maybe a teeny bit of fear.

And in all honesty, she wasn't going to be helping with her next statement either. "...D-daddy says that boys o-only w-want one thing..." Her face was now a brighter red than any Valentine's heart, but she attempted to make things right by adding "...b-but, you aren't like that! You're my friend! I... I just wish Daddy could understand that!"

With a small childish pout on her face, she proceeded to stuff some of the brownie in her mouth. It wasn't a very large bite, or even a normal bite. Yet, it was still much more than Yvette would usually fit into her mouth. She chewed and chewed and chewed, and after about 2 minutes of chewing, she finally managed to swallow down the bit of brownie.

With her mouth cleared for talking, she added for reassurance "Daddy won't find out."

Topher didn't quite know how to respond. If there was one topic that he really couldn't handle with someone, it was condensed into her statement and magnified one thousand times. His hand was shaking as he brought it up to his lips so he could lick off the bit of chocolate filling that had leaked out of the tart from earlier. This wasn't going to be easy.

"Well...I do know what your dad is talking about..." Yep. This was going to be awkward indeed. Though, he wasn't like that right? I mean, he'd never really been that type of boy so why would he start now? So, he was safe right? Those two minutes where she was trying to chew were completely silent. Topher was actually stuck on what to say. What could he say? He doubted he could win over her dad just by putting on the charm. Her type of dad would probably take a sledgehammer to his face before he could even get a word in edge wise.

Still, it would be fine if her dad didn't find out. He just could never find out. It was weird. Something about this felt like an affair but, as long as she was determined to keep it a secret from her father then he was sure it would be okay. "Well, let's just make the most out of it then!" He smiled widely. "How do you like your brownie?"

The girl's head bobbed up and down one time in a sharp, silent "YES." Unfortunately, Topher's timing for his question on the food was a bit off, for Yvette had already stuffed another "large" bite in her mouth. She tried to chew faster, and she even signaled with a single finger waggling at him to let him know it would take a minute for her to respond.

Of course, it actually took 2 minutes.

She swallowed down the well chewed lump of white chocolate goo, then with a small gasp stated "It's very good! I've never had a white brownie before. It seems kind of funny though, since the name suggests it should be brown." She giggled, because she thought she made a funny. It was a very lame funny if anything, but for the quiet girl, it honestly was an improvement.

Half of her current treat was gone, and now that she had answered the question, she once more dug her teeth in, anxious to move onto some other treats. Yvette still wasn't going to pile all sorts of treats on her plate yet, but she seemed to be trying to make an effort to get to another pastry of some sort.

Sometimes he wished the girl could chew faster. It was torture having to stand there in silence, so much so that he popped the rest of the tart in his mouth. Though it didn't astonish him that he finished it before her. Good lord. He'd hate to watch her eat an entire meal. Suddenly, his hands felt very empty. He'd been holding that tart for so long that he could still feel it even as he flexed his fingers. This was the third time he reached out and the 3rd thing that was covered in chocolate. An entire basket of chocolate covered cherries.

Topher was almost surprised when she spoke again and actually made a joke. Admittedly, it was a bad one but it was like the first moon landing in his eyes. "Uh...yeah. Mom said that too when she first made them." He laughed, trying to make it sound like he was both laughing at her joke and his own statement.

It was better to keep Yvette's hopes up rather than make her stop talking again. "She makes all different colors of brownies! It's kind of funny. Lucas was so confused when he first saw these! He thought they were marshmallows or something!" He'd remembered it clearly. Lucas had been debating it with his mother for nearly five minutes before biting into the desert to prove his point only to find a dense texture that was most certainly brownie.

Despite having her mouth practically crammed full of white brownie, she managed to make a noise. An adorably muffled giggling noise that almost sounded like it was coming from a mouse or gerbil. It might have been rude, but she couldn't help it. In her mind, the image of the scary Lucas (yes, she already had it set in her mind the man was scary) arguing with Eva over something so trivial was playing. It just seemed like a very off-balance sort of argument, since Topher's mom really was very nice. How could someone argue with her and really expect to win with all those nice-waves emanating from her?

At least while she was chewing this time, she was livening up the air with her muffled laughter, and when she swallowed, she was ready to speak right away. "They'd be the funniest marshmallows I've ever seen if they were!" Another giggle escaped before she eagerly trotted up to the chocolate tarts and snatched one up as delicately as she could manage.

Before she took a bite, she wisely asked a question so that Topher would have time to respond while she was chewing away at her mouthful. "What other color brownies are there? I've never seen any other color aside from brown..." There was a small pause before she corrected herself. "Oh! And white now too!"

"Lucas certainly thought so. After he took that bite, he pretty much just walked out the kitchen even though he was still eating it!" He put one of the cherries in his mouth, taking a bit longer to spit out the stem this time. These brownies turned heads a lot just because of the color. Somehow Eva had made them work and made them delicious to boot. How she managed that? He didn't know. It wasn't like he made a habit of going through his mother's recipe index cards.

Watching her snatch up the tart was a welcome change from before. Was she actually getting more comfortable in the situation? Topher hoped so. the only time she had even begun to open up to him was in his dorm room with her prom dress and even that was a small step in his world.

He chuckled as he plucked another cherry from the basket, rejuvenated by her enthusiasm for conversation. "My mom made blue ones for my birthday once. The class was afraid to eat them since they thought the were alien food or something. Until the tasted them of course Then they were gone in a few minutes."

Fortunately, the tart wasn't the same consistency as the brownie, so it only took her about a minute to swallow down her mouthful of chocolate. Yet, before she managed to make it disappear, her eyes blinked a few times at the mention of the random color the brownies had been found in.

"B-blue?" she repeated, making certain she got the color right. "I think that would have been fun to bring treats to class when it was my birthday." She sighed a bit as she thought it over. Her birthday was in December towards the latter half of the month. This meant that frequently, her birthday happened during the winter break. Which meant she wasn't in school for her birthday. Even if she had been in school, her mom didn't bake, and they couldn't afford to buy a whole box of pastries for a class of 30-odd children.

There was another sigh with a hint of sadness lingering on her breath. "I guess that's what happens when you are born in December." Not really knowing what to say, she stuffed another bite of her tart in her mouth.

Another stem in the trashcan and none on the floor. Topher smirked to himself. He was getting good at that. "Yeah. They were bright blue. Food coloring or something that she put in the white brownies. I'm not too sure. I didn't watch her make them since I was at school. They were a complete surprise to me when she brought them in." He paused as he pulled another cherry out of the basket, looking at the thing with a bit of concern. 'I hope she didn't spend the entire day making them or anything..."

The thought of Eva spending so much time on something for him definitely struck a cord. Though, having a birthday in May normally meant those things. Taking treats to the class for your birthday meant a good half hour of nothing but eating and playing around. No one could miss that.

"Meh. It isn't all that special to have a birthday in May anyway" Topher said with a laugh, spinning the cherry between his fingers.

"May seventh, right?" If there was one thing Yvette was good with, it was remembering things. She was good with names and faces, and remembering things like birthdays. Sure, she might not have been the most rambunctious party-goer, but she at least remembered important things like birthdays.

With a few more nibbles, she managed to finish off her tart before taking a look around the room. It was such a pretty house, and again, that slight pang of jealousy managed to touch the back of her mind. Her eyes drifted for a moment, eventually finding their way towards the window in the kitchen. Even the view was lovely.

Yvette let out a puff of a sigh as she pulled her eyes back towards the room she was in. Or at least she tried to. There just happened to be a clock in the middle of her eyes' path.

A clock that said it was 4:30 pm.

With a tiny whimper, she asked "I-is... is that clock correct?" Her finger lifted up, trembling slightly as it pointed to the offending clock. If it wasn't obvious, it was growing later than she had expected and needed to shuffle off on her way.

Topher nodded enthusiastically. "Yep! May 7th was when I was unleashed upon the world!" Or at least that's what his mother always said. Though, he didn't think she meant it in a bad way. She was just trying to be a cute mom in that way. "I can't believe I'm almost an adult and all. Scary huh?" He knew she was and it always felt weird for him considering that he always just felt older. Of course he probably felt older than a lot of people. He was a senior after all. That meant he was older by default to lower classmen despite age.

"Yeah. Why? Do you need to go or something?" He slowly placed a the box of cherries down, going to make a nice little plate of goodies for her to take back. It wouldn't be gentlemanly if he didn't at least give her something for the road. There was so much there after all. It was just 4:30 but he wasn't sure what she had to do. He knew that she did have to take the bus home which might take a while.

"I missed wishing Daddy off to work!!!" Oh, she never did that! Never ever EVER missed wishing Daddy off to work! While the boy put together a plate of treats for her, she quickly scrambled to get into her jacket so she could head back to the bus stop. Her mind was somewhat of a blur at the moment, but soon enough her friend had gathered up some treats for her to take home.

If she had any say about it, they probably wouldn't make it home. Though reality was cruel, and because of how slow she ate, they would make it home.

It didn't mean she had to share though. They had been given to her after all!

Topher quickly shuffled her back to Eva and Lucas so she could say her proper goodbyes, and soon enough, she was escorted out of the house.

Hesitantly, she squeaked out a simple "I'll see you around school... kay?"

He nodded in reply, and soon enough the girl was practically trotting on her way, clutching her little plate of goodies up close to her.

She had just spent Valentine's Day with a boy. And it wasn't half bad!

Daddy was just never allowed to know.
