Just to be safe, I think I'll white out the spoilerish places. When someone tells me I can take it off, I will.

Like Draco, I wasn't as taken by this episode as some here were. Sure, it was pretty up to par with SPN's usual use of authentic-seeming ancient lore and love of shattering the usual stereotypes ala Cherub-man; but I just didn't quite FEEL it this episode. I couldn't cry for Dean because... well... maybe because this episode felt a little 'dead inside' to me, too.

You know, I'm just gonna start at the beginning.

The opening didn't bother me much. My boyfriend (whom I've gotten hooked on it) watched the intro before me and just about gagged--he told me to watch it carefully, and that he'd never seen anything that disgusting in the whole of the series. I have to disagree. The shapeshifter sheddings have to be the grossest thing I've ever seen in the series. I kinda have this thing about runny eggs... but that's just me.

I loved the Cupid, and I hope the series gets the opportunity to show him again. Perhaps in a big angel-tastic finale. The comedic element was a welcome relief from all the drama that went on in this episode.

Speaking of, I LOVE the reintroduction of Sam's 'hunger'. His character has been through a number of transformations over the course of this show. And while I the 'darkside/angsty' Sam got to be a turn-off after a while, 'sober' Sam was starting to lack dimension for me. The steps that he took to avoid Famine's effects were admirable, and one of my favorite parts in the entire episode--which is saying something for me, as I'm a Dean girl at heart.

Which brings me to our poor, lost little soldier. In all honesty, if I think about it, I can see how this would be a reasonable outcome for the episode. But reasonable doesn't pull at my heartstrings. The ending scenes felt terribly recycled--Dean and Cas standing outside Bobby's panic room to the sound of Sam's screams; Dean taking a breather in the junkyard and asking for help--which was a total turn-off. And while the mystery of Famine's effects (or lack thereof) on Dean was enough to keep me fascinated throughout the episode, revealing the reason left me wanting.

'You're dead inside'? What could this statement possibly mean? Does it imply that Dean is losing his resolve? That he could give in to Michael at any time? Does it speak at all for his time in Hell? What could have caused this? What was the trigger? And is it even true?

I'm actually hoping that the answer to the last one turns out to be 'no'; that Dean somehow had help avoiding the effects of the Horseman. Because to me, Dean is the relentless drive that keeps the show going; that keeps hope in all of us for the good guys to prevail and the bad guys to go back to their respective planes of existence. Without that, what peril could our story be in?
