I had braces for a year and a half a while ago, ang they HURT! I tried to play my French Horn just three days after I got them, and I couldn't play a note! I cried so hard because I thought (naively) that I would never be able to play again. xd But you just have to wait for the initial pain to go down and keep practicing. You'll get it eventually and play just like before, though if you're brass, the braces will imprint themselves on the insides of your lips from being pressed against the mouthpiece. whee
pirate and ninja do NOT get along. xp

I had braces for three years in middle school, and it was really painful. Every day after band, I'd be peeling my lips off of the braces, and it just wasn't fun at all. (I play trumpet, btw).

I have braces on now, and have had them for a year and 2 months now. I got my braces when I was a freshman and it screwed with my playing tremendously. It's really only if you have the bottom braces that it hurts playing a saxophone. I play the alto/bari sax and when you curl your lip under it hurts like hell. I cut my lip plenty of times because of it and had to get a new reed b/c mine was bloody. sweatdrop
You get used to it though. like 3 months into playing with braces a kind of callous formed where the braces were on my lip(like how when you first play and you form a callous from your teeth.)
It really depends on intrument though. I think trumpet's and other brass intstruments have it worse. My friend has braces but is really good at playing trumpet. I tried his trumpet and my lips hurt because of the mouthpiece & braces.

Me: I had braces and had major problems with tongueing [couldn't do it] but once I got them off, not only did I get a flawless smile but also such awesome tune, range, endurance, and now I can tongue!
My ownsome friend Daniel: he has braces and got 3rd chair trumpet player in the highschool band in his freshman year. If he's this good, just you wait till he gets them off!
Isaac: he has braces too and is as good as Daniel but he drool alot and when he pulls his lips away from the mouthpiece strands of saliva would be pulled away too and drop everywhere, eewww!

its takes alot more effort for me to reach higher notes on the tuba. on the baritone it does that and decreased my range, making it to about 2 octaves. i have them for about another year, so its going to be fun when i get them off

i had that problem but its now gone. enihoo at first it will seem awkward but your music store should have plastic things that go over the braces for people that have to roll their lip over their braces. it really helps if its a problem !

i know a couple of double reed players that have or had braces in the past.. they didn't stop playing... i play a brass instrument and it messed with how i had to play the notes but i got used to it pretty fast.. i found that it i had air leaking through my braces that i could just plug it up with wax, and they give you that... it's not too bad though
