Layla grinned and shrugged slightly. "I can see the appeal of Impressing the queen," she said with a slight smile. "I mean, who wouldn't like to have a big weyr, to have everyone suddenly be nice to you, to somehow end up with lots of gifts given to you, but that's not all there is to it. That's just the perks, there's so much responsibility with it, everyone would expect so much... I guess for me, the ups and downs of a queens versus a fighting dragon sort of balance out. I don't know how well I'd cope if I actually ended up in either situation but... Yea. Pros and cons to both, you know?"

Anyway, Tofir's other question. "I revised a couple of guesses after the touching," Layla said with a nod, "let me just think... Right. I'll go in the same order, just for simplicity's sake. I think that the pink charcoal and streaked sky are greens, the same for the three spots," she began, a thoughtful furrow creasing her brow. "The blue earth, I thought that was a brown when I looked from outside the sands but now I think it's a blue. I still think the spicy red is going to be a bronze, then there's the queen who's obvious, and the new grass... I think the new grass is a green again. My guess for the orange stripe egg is a brown, and lastly I think that the grey speckled is a blue... So I've guessed at four greens, two blues, a brown, a bronze, and the queen." That sounded about right, but in a clutch this small the average proportions of one colour to another weren't going to be perfect... Maybe one she'd guessed as a green was a blue? Three spots maybe? Mmh, still, time would tell!

"So, do you think if I wore a dress to the hatching I could maybe get in on some of that gold action? You make it sound like a really good life." Tofir laughed from deep in his gut. He was more than self-confident enough to wear a dress to the hatching, but he got the feeling he would be thrashed by the senior healers for it. "Actually, I'd rather not have all that responsibility. I think the power might go to my head. They'd call me T'fir the Tyrant."

When Layla switched to talking about her guesses, which one had been revised and which ones had remained unchanged, he was back to taking notes, though he only had to note which ones had changed. Being the sneaky sort of person he was, he'd written down her guesses over dinner after he got back to the dormitory. He did appreciate, however, that she reiterated her original guesses, in case he hadn't had that kind of foresight.

"Sounds like a well-balanced clutch. But then, so did your other guesses," he remarked after noting her changes, and then he shrugged. He wasn't sure what good knowing a person's guesses would do him, but he knew it was impossible to have too much data.

"Yea," Layla smiled and shrugged, "I guess part of my reason for making those guesses is that it makes a good balance, the sort of thing that you might expect... For all I know there'll be only one green, a heap of blues, and maybe a couple of browns... Hope we don't have to wait too long to find out," she added, "I'm nervous already!" Nervous and excited and oh shells how much she wanted to find her lifemate! This might be her only chance to be on the sands themselves, and though dragons did sometimes choose from the stands it was rarer. She just wanted to find Hers, was that so much to ask?... Of course, every candidate would be thinking that. It couldn't be everyone's lucky day.

"Surprises do happen," Tofir said philosophically. In truth, he didn't much like surprises when they had to do with his research. He would have liked it if everything went according to his theories and hypotheses, rather than disproving them and forcing him to revise them to the point where they no longer resemble his original ideas at all. Just once he would like the facts to fit the speculations.

"But I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. I don't think any of the surprises will be unpleasant ones. Maybe there'll be a few too many bronzes in this clutch or something. Or something." Really, as long as no one died - dragons included - Tofir was willing to count any hatching as a success.

He cocked his head to one side as a bell rang, letting the Weyr know that this work period was over. Which meant lunch time for most people. He smiled at Layla and said, "That's lunch. I should let you get to that. If there's anything else you think of that you want to tell me, or you just want to talk sometime, my office door's always open."

He had notes to transcribe, and he was eager to begin.

"Right!" Layla grinned and clambered to her feet, dusting herself down as she did so. "Let me know if you need me for anything else," she said with a nod, still grinning, "I'm always happy to go on about eggs and dragons to somebody... And if I don't see you before, good luck on the sands!" With these words, Layla turned and hurried back towards the Weyr; she knew what was for lunch, and she didn't want to miss out on the best bits!
