Roseth was listening somewhat to the humans' conversation as well, and the parallels between theirs and the dragons' amused her. Rumors would be fun to spread. I've heard so many interesting ones about us, surely some of those could be turned around.

Like Kannaroth, she couldn't bring herself to actually hurt another dragon purposefully. She might wish it on other dragons - fervently - but she wouldn't raise a claw against another of her kind except in defense of Jasrai. But she couldn't really envision a scenario in which that would be necessary, having forgotten her meeting with Shamth all those weeks ago and her threats upon hatching all those months ago. She would have dismissed those anyway because she was so much younger and more immature then.

Maybe when they find out we're in their wing, they'll want to leave all on their own, Roseth theorized with an eye roll to match her clutchmate's.

"Oh, absolutely," Jasrai said. "I feel my character growing by leaps and bounds. Though, in reality, it's not been so bad since the new clutch was laid. Did you hear the weyrlingmaster slip up and compliment Roseth the other day?"

Her smile turned into outright laughter as her mind quickly conjured a mental image of an army of firelizards fighting Thread alongside of the three green dragons. Flynx and Sati looked up at her in surprise, and wanted to know where all the other firelizards came from.

"Oh, there'd be songs about it all right. But I'm not sure how flattering they'd be. It feels more like the subject matter for a comedic parody than a heroic ballad."

"Maybe so," the small green grinned broadly. "They'll all be looking for excuses to scurry off to different wings, they might even try to transfer to a different weyr!" It would be amusing to say the least, she was quite sure that some might fancy leaving out of sheer embarrassment when they discovered that the terrible three were actually superior to them in one way or another. She was willing to bet that Nellath could outlast some of the smallest blues, Roseth was just above average at everything, and then there was herself, one of the smallest and therefore fastest and most agile greens about. Seeing them flourish would really smart for all the people who had invested so much time in putting them down.

"Yea, I did," Y'kar gave a snort of amusement. "I thought he looked pretty surprised to hear himself say it, but it was true so he couldn't just take it back. I bet when we actually graduate and he's stuck with a 'normal' clutch he'll find himself missing us; I bet there'll be at least one or two utter deadglows in there, he'll long to deal with sharp minds again even if he has to take sharp tongues along with them." You didn't know what you had until it was gone, poor, poor man. In turns to come he would look back on teaching the terrible trio and give a wistful sigh.

"Still," the scrawny youth grinned, "let them laugh all they like while we save the world. They'll be too embarrassed to admit it really happened, so it'll become a silly children's story. Immortalized in bedtime stories, how does that sound to you?"

"Mediocre," Kannaroth replied for her own part, including her lifemate and Roseth in the comment. "Plausible though. How better to make us into a laughing stock than to make us one of those stories you tell young ones to make them giggle and relax after a more frightening tale?"

One can only hope, Roseth said bitingly. Her experiences with other dragons had not been pleasant, by and large, and she was in no real hurry to be forced to work with them on a regular basis. The higher-ups' concerns that the trio would make trouble if they were together on a wing might have been well-founded. Certainly the chances of mutiny would increase.

"Oh, no doubt." Jasrai rolled her eyes. She didn't really think he would miss her. She wasn't a deadglow, but she was also the despair of anyone whose task was to make a strong, fit rider out of someone. She was not particularly strong and it was looking as though fitness was something she would never achieve.

I think it sounds wonderful. To be immortalized, even as a figure of fun, Roseth said. After all, we won't always be around to remind them of how remarkable we are, so why not become immortal?

Jasrai wasn't much bothered by the idea, either. She, too, figured they'd be dead, but her attitude was more toward the end of, so what does it matter anyway?

"Ha. Yes," Kannaroth grinned, "fools would mock us until the end of time, but anyone with a working brain would listen to that tale and think how amazing those three greens who fought with an arm of firelizards must have been. If we were no, how could we have turned a pretty pet or useful messenger into a miniature fighting dragon?" An amusing idea, but not one she would ever get to try out in all probability. It wasn't as if the wings of Telgar were just going to be asleep when the Thread came back. They would be ready, and not willing to try out something as radical as her idea.

"Still," Y'kar shrugged, "whether he misses up or not, this will all be over soon. I can't wait until we're allowed to leave the Weyr on our own, to just go out flying if we feel like it, to drop in on a hold to spend some of the marks we'll be making as adult riders." Maybe to sell off some of the things Kannaroth stole... though he would have to be very, very careful if he ever tried something like that. Never sell anything too valuable; it would come back to bite him in the end if he did.

Working brains. Those seem to be in short supply nowadays. Roseth cocked her head to one side. Or maybe it just seems that way because we are so much more intelligent than everyone else?

She shifted and wrapped her tail more tightly around herself. I don't think I could do that. Jasrai's pair only listen to me when I get very firm with them. Though they listen to her perfectly.

That fact rankled her. She was a dragon, their closer cousin, and yet they listened to her human more. In fact, they seemed to think that Jasrai was their human, despite the fact that she had been Impressed to her longer than they had. Jasrai was her human.

"I know. I want to introduce Roseth to my family." Not that Roseth was particularly looking forward to that introduction - she didn't like the idea of sharing Jasrai with her family, either.

"Though shopping might be fun, too. Maybe I could find someone to make me clothes that don't make me look as round as a ball." She grinned, making light of her appearance.

I know you better than that, Roseth admonished. You have to get over that.

"Well," Kannaroth shrugged her wings, "even you can't be good at absolutely everything. I just seem to have a knack with the little creatures." Odd how much she loved them really, they were so stupid and usually stupidity annoyed her... but they were supposed to be that way. Simple little minds, but bright and full of life. Had she loved them first, drawing them to her, or had it been the other way around, or perhaps it had come from both directions at once. Still, she supposed that was a question she'd never be able to answer, so she'd just have to ignore it.

"Mmh," Y'kar snorted, "yea, and perhaps I can find some clothes that don't make me look like a collection of twigs. I'd've thought that all this hard effort we're putting in would have put some muscle on me. Apparently that was wishful thinking." The same went for height; in almost a turn he hadn't put on so much as an inch. Still, it was probably a good thing in the end given Kannaroth's size...

"I want to find my mother and show Kannaroth off to her," Y'kar went on, his eyes hardening a little. "She'll regret turning me aside when she sees what an amazing dragon Kanna's turned into. I hope she asks me to forgive her, so I can spit in her face." Nasty little feline. She'd taught him some good lessons in life, he'd give her that, but she'd tried to make him go too far with it; trusting A'li and Jasrai hadn't hurt him in the least. He'd like to rub that in her face too; he had friends, which was more than she had.

Can, too, Roseth argued automatically, but she didn't pursue it. She didn't really like to fight, and she really didn't like to fight with Kannaroth. She almost never won those fights, and so she generally preferred not to have them.

But you are good with them, she conceded. So is my human. That's why I don't mind so much that I'm not. We balance each other well. You and Y'kar are well-matched, too.

"Yeah, well, I'd've thought the work would make me smaller," Jasrai replied, grinning. "Clearly someone isn't doing something right. One or the other of us should really have been correct."

Jasrai listened quietly. She really had no one she wanted to show in the same way Y'kar did. The only people she felt she needed to prove anything to were at the Weyr, and she was sensible enough to realize that they would never be convinced unless she pulled something miraculous out of her bag of tricks or saved the Weyrleader from death or something. Not likely, though possible scenarios were fun to imagine.

"Have fun with that," she said, having finally decided that was a safe response. She was glad that she got along with her parents, and that they were loving and supportive. "You might consider getting Kanna to cough some firestone. Not enough to set anything alight. Just enough to look impressive."

The holders would not appreciate the display. Jasrai didn't much care. She wasn't a holder anymore, and although she had never fully embraced the family A'li and Y'kar offered, she did recognize that she would always be part of the Weyr at this point. A dragon and two firelizards. Sometimes her good fortune continued to astound her.

Ah, well, there was just no telling Roseth, was there? Sometimes her sister's enormous arrogance annoyed her but most often, like today, she found it mildly endearing. "We all balance one another well," she commented, her eyes whirling a brighter blue. "All six of us. I suppose we wouldn't have chosen rider that did not go well with one anothers." Nobody got along perfectly all the time of course, but on the whole their little group was as close to perfect as you could get.

"You know," an evil grin spread across Y'kar's face, "that is very, very tempting indeed... Still," he sighed and glanced out of the weyr at the position of the sun, "I should really at least start sorting my stuff out if I'm going to have it half way decent before lessons this afternoon. Still up for helping me?" If not, fine, he'd cope, but the work would go a lot faster and a lot more pleasantly with Jasrai's company.

I wasn't thinking about it, I don't think, Roseth said.

There was no way she could remember hatching at this point, or what was going through her mind when she hatched, but she was fairly certain she wasn't thinking about what would be best for her clutchmates. Their well-being didn't top her list of concerns now, after all, and she didn't think she'd changed all that much. From what Jasrai told her, she'd actually been a bit of a brat when she was younger. Thinking about others didn't seem like something she'd do.

But we are well-balanced. And good at what we do.

"Lessons," Jasrai recalled with a groan. She'd managed to forget about those for the time being. Every silver lining had to have a cloud, though. "You didn't have to remind me, you know."

She cracked her back and her neck. "But you're right. My offer to help still stands."

Are we going somewhere? Roseth asked. Can I see Kannaroth's weyr now?

Maybe.

"Well, better to be reminded than to show up late," Y'kar pulled a face and shook his head. "Imagine the trouble we'd be in. It's not like we've a heap of other clutchmates to make our absence less obvious. Besides, the weyrling master just loves finding fault with us. Better not give him an excuse to give us extra chores." Still, he rather wished he could have just forgotten lessons and stayed here chatting; that was a lot more fun than hearing the same old crap over and over again. "If you're still up for it, I'd still appreciate the help. Might as well get it done quickly."

"Mmmh, looks like you get to see my weyr now," Kannaroth observed as Hers moved over to her and climbed up onto her back. "Make sure you secure the straps properly," she instructed him; it was probably needless, but his mind did seem to be on other things, and she didn't want to risk having to dive after him if he fell off having forgotten.

"I know, I know," Y'kar replied, "I was getting to that, don't worry." Not only was he very concerned with preserving his own life, he now had to preserve it for Kannaroth as well. If he died, her brilliance would wink out in a moment. What a great loss to the world, so many idiots left un-quipped.

"Well, when you put it that way, I suppose you would remember," the small green replied with a grin.
