"It's fine, so no need to apologize. It's not like you've tried to hit me or anything and thus far you've answered all my questions. You're still wide awake too which is good because I can monitor your condition better, which I will admit would be harder to do if you couldn't talk and all I got was a murmur and little to no further response."
Yulu had walked off to get something after cleaning, still able to listen to the woman talk, and when she returned she had a jar of something that smelt heavily like mint in her hand, the odor leaking though the corked lid. She popped the top and stuck her finger in, getting a bit on it before she smeared a streak underneath the patient's nose. It probably felt cool to the skin and it always smelt wonderful, Yulu even putting a bit of it on her own face as though not to leave herself out. She didn't really need it, her stomach was fine and not even remotely unsettled, but it was probably the right thing to do.
"There, that should take care of the blood smell for you, and if you have trouble with anything else let me know. I'm going to start stitching now, so the better you can stay still the less time it'll take for me to get things done. You squirm, I start over. Understood?"

"Why would I try to hit you?" Jasrai wondered aloud. "You're the one helping me, here. That'd be damn rude of me."
Flynx's claws hooked into the shoulder of Jasrai's leather jacket as he found himself a comfortable position nestled against her neck. He had to displace her hair to get into this position, but that was his right as best companion, he felt. Sati chirped from her spot on Jasrai's chest, supported by her human's breasts, and pointed out to Flynx that Jasrai had blood in her hair, too. Should they do something about that? Flynx ignored her. He could sense that his Jasrai was nervous, and he was occupied with trying to soothe her, and let her know that he would protect her.
Jasrai glanced at her firelizards and groaned. It would take her hours to undo what they were "helpfully" doing. Particularly Sati, who had decided that she should do what she could about the blood in her human's hair. What that translated to was finding any blood that was in Jasrai's hair and separating the bloody strands, then licking them clean and setting them aside. She was methodical about it, which was somewhat surprising, but Jasrai could already envision the snarl it would result in, and she'd be trying to contend with undoing it one-armed. Wouldn't that be fun.
"Thanks," she said as Yulu swiped a streak of minty something under her nose. She didn't put too much thought into what it was. She didn't know enough about healercraft to even speculate. "That helps."
Did she need anything else? No. Not unless she could maybe be unconscious for the stitches. But she didn't want to be that vulnerable ever. "I'll try very hard to hold very still."
Actually, she couldn't feel anything in her arm, and if she didn't look she'd probably be fine. Jasrai was more concerned at how Flynx, Sati, and Roseth would take it. She'd been keeping Roseth informed as things happened, and the dragon was concerned about the idea of stitches, and also felt incredibly guilty.

Yulu had already started doing stitches when the girl on the table agreed to be very still, a chuckle coming from her lips at how delayed most of her responses seemed to be. It looked as though the medicine she had given her as a powder was starting to kick in, and Yulu felt the need to hurry up the process will still at the same time take it slow. She was being very thorough, just like the fitts in the girl's hair, and it wasn't too long after that she pulled the last stitch and began to look over her work. It wasn't the best she'd ever done, but it certainly was not her worst. Everything look clean and neat, most importantly of all everything looked as though it would hold, and Yulu gave a nod of approval.
"There, I'm finished. Now all that's left is for me to wrap you up, get you some more painkillers, and then send you on your way. Are you a Sr. Weyrling or are you a Wingrider?"
The silence had been heavy until it was broken by Yulu's voice and her questions, her sounds prompting even the quiet Song in the corner to chirp out of mild surprise.

Jasrai looked over when Yulu spoke.
She'd been concentrating very hard on the conversation she was holding with Roseth about how they would compensate for her injury in the coming days. Obviously some changes would have to be made, and it would be better to agree on them in advance. The necessary conversation was also serving as a distraction from the fact that her arm was being stitched up, which she didn't even want to think about. Sometimes she really was just a regular girl, and she didn't like the thought of needles piercing skin and pulling thread through it and maybe pulling the skin a little...Erk!
Flynx had not been pleased with Yulu throughout the stitching process, which meant that Sati wasn't either, but Jasrai had kept both of them well in hand, as it were. The last thing she wanted was for her one or both of them to cause the healer to make a mistake. Well. Maybe not the last thing, but on the list of Things Jasrai Wants it ranked pretty near the bottom. She was relieved to be able to relax her mental control of the pair. It was exhausting, particularly since Flynx wanted to attack Yulu and Sati was willing to help him.
"Thanks," she said without looking at the healer's work. She didn't really want to look at it. But she sighed and made herself look after all as Yulu spoke of painkillers. She'd have to look at it sometime.
"I'm a senior weyrling," she replied. "Is there anything I need to know about caring for this? I've never had stitches before."

"For the most part you'll need to keep it clean and free from dirt for the next few days, and don't put your wound in bathwater. When you wash use a clean rag and fresh water, and make sure you put a salve and bandage over it for at least three or four days. After that you'll still need to keep a salve on it for another sevenday or two, but shortly thereafter it'll be time to remove the stitches. If you want to keep things quiet you'll need to come find me again, as none of the people here are dumb enough to believe that they'd forget giving someone stitches for such a large wound."
Yulu made notes in her head of the tasks Sr. Weyrlings would have to do, her memory flicking back to what the Candidatemaster had said several times over about responsibilities. If she were thinking right this woman didn't have that many chores to do, but there was always care of her dragon that she would be responsible for. There would always be oiling and tasks that would be easier with one hand, so . . .
"You'll need someone you can trust to help you out with caring for your dragon until it's time to take the stitches out, otherwise there's a chance you could pop them yourself and we'd be in major trouble. A scar would be the least of your worries then, as well as the least of mine. But moving along, let me get this wrapped and get you something to drink, as you'll need to rest here for a little while longer. I don't think it a good idea for you to hobble along the Weyr in a medicine induced haze, but if you really need to get out of here I will help you to your dragon and you can sleep it off in your Weyr."

Jasrai nodded. "I can do that."
She refrained from stating her own opinions of the general intelligence of the people at the Weyr. Besides, there was a chance the healers might be the exception to the general idiocy, and even if they weren't it would be stupid to insult Yulu's coworkers without knowing how she felt about them. It wasn't a good way to win friends and influence people, though Jasrai had just about given up on doing that. Being ignored was good enough for her.
"Will you be working here?" she asked. "I mean, will it be all right for me to ask for you?"
As for getting someone to help her in caring for Roseth...fat chance. She liked Y'kar and A'li well enough, but she wasn't about to let them know she was injured. They'd want to know how, and then she'd either have to lie to them or tell them what she and Roseth were doing, and neither of those was an appealing option. She'd just manage on her own. She could definitely avoid popping stitches, at least. It wasn't as though Roseth needed oiling every day, and if it came down to it during lessons, she could just claim female problems. No one ever wanted to mess with that, even though they did tend to sneer a little.
"You're right about the hobbling around being a bad idea, but I would feel better sleeping it off in my own weyr. Fewer people to see me. And that way Roseth can reassure herself that I'm fine. I should be all right getting to the weyr. It's got access from inside the weyr as well as an entrance for dragons." She hoped she sounded convincing, because she didn't particularly want to ask for or accept any more help. It went against her nature.

"I'll be working here so long as nothing happens at the Hatching, in which case I may find myself in a different occupation altogether. While I don't see a career change as anything bad, it'd make things difficult for you in the long run. You could still probably find me if you really needed me to do something for you, as I have a stash of healing supplies in my barrack room. I don't like to leave anything to chance."
Not leaving anything to chance also meant that Yulu liked to take things when they were doing the evening inventory, always making sure to adjust the numbers on her counts to prevent suspicions from occurring. It wasn't as though she considered herself stealing such things, she was merely acquiring them in case of her own future need and the needs of anyone around her should they be unable to get a Healer in time. Not to mention she could care less what would eventually happen to her, punishment perhaps and the forced surrender of the collection that had been gathered for the better part of a Turn.
"But anyway, my name's Yulu and you...must be Jasrai, right? It took me a while to place your face but once you mentioned Roseth I knew who you were right off. The Healers around here make sure none of us forget the names of those three dragons, lest we forget just how brutal a hatching can be despite such low numbers. Personally I don't care to know or remember, there will always be blood on the sands, but I do think knowing will help eventually in prevention of more."
She didn't really know what she was saying anymore, mostly patient babble, and despite Jasrai's lack of wanting help (or verbally expressing it) the Healer moved to lift the woman to her feet, prepared to let her lean against her.
"I know you'll want to get on your own, but I can at the very least help you walk to where your Roseth is. If anyone stops to ask us why we're moving together it's easier for me to talk and give some healer mumbo jumbo answer then for you to just ignore them and walk on, so just bear with me and let's get going."

"A candidate, too? Good luck on the sands. I do hope your experience is less violent."
It cost Jasrai nothing to be friendly and wish Yulu luck. Besides, Yulu seemed to be less of an idiot than most of the young men she'd met since coming to the Weyr. It might be nice to have another less-than-prejudiced rider in the wings. Not that she was ready to declare her everlasting friendship or become bloodbrothers with the healer or anything - though there was certainly enough of her blood around that it would have been easy - but Jasrai had learned to appreciate the people who weren't hostile.
"And thank you. I'm sure I'll find you somehow. In the worst case scenario, I'll send Flynx to find your gold. He's got a very good memory for people." Yes. She considered firelizards people. They had too much personality not to be.
She succumbed to being helped to her feet, but flat out refused to lean on Yulu. She was fat, and leaning on people was simply not something she did. It was one of the ways she convinced herself that it was possible to hide how much she weighed. She also didn't sit on laps or jump into people's arms or generally allow people to touch her for fear they would discover how much of her was soft that shouldn't be.
As for relocating, Jasrai wasn't sure Yulu quite got what she was saying. She tried to explain. "Going to where Roseth is would be taking the long way. If I just go to my weyr, she can meet me there. I've got one of the weyrs that's accessible to those who can't fly, too, because I don't like going outside in bad weather if I can avoid it."
Not the point. Get to the point. "I can manage, really. I'll send Flynx or Sati back if it turns out I can't. I'm not interested in being is a hero or a martyr. And even if I was, Roseth wouldn't let me. She's incredibly bossy. If you're lucky, your dragon won't be."

"It's all about location."
Yulu may have sounded like she was joking, and in a way she was. Location and gender seemed to play two important roles in Telgar, what with your gender telling your location. It was as simple as that and there was no reason to look any further into it.
When Jasrai began to show signs again of outright now wanting Yulu's help, the Healer decided she wouldn't push the issue. If this Jasrai said she was okay without help then she'd wash her hands of her, an easy task considering she wasn't supposed to have treated her at all, but whatever. At the mention of use of flitts for messengers she nodded that she could agree to that, Song more than glad to be useful sometimes to more than just Yulu.
"Alright then, off you go. Keep your stitches out of the water for at least a day and come to me when it's time to clean them. The painkillers you took shouldn't wear off for another few hours or so, so when they happens you can take this with a full mug of water and only water. Don't try with something hot like klah or all you'll get is a nasty taste in your mouth and pain later. Also, make sure you eat something that has citrus in it, you need it to help with your blood loss. Understood?"
Yulu moved out from under Jasrai's arm once they reached the door and she gave her a slight push out, shoving the powdered medicine into her good hand before she could get out of sight. There was a faint smile on her face, a grin really, and she rubbed her hands together to start getting some of the blood off.
"Hopefully I won't have to see you in here again any time soon, but take care anyway and maybe I'll see you around otherwise. Just watch over your arm and don't do anything stupid, or else you'll have to explain it to someone other than me and I'll just laugh behind your back."
She gave a wave of her hand as she turned on her heels and started towards the water to wash her hands, done now with caring over this Greenrider and how she may fair. She literally was, washing her hands of her.
