After Happy Birthday at Sick Bay 2

Not long after Panther had left, Cal was awakened from her slumber. She rubbed a sleepy eye, minding the gauze covering the other. “Hey…” She piped out in a well-worn voice, soothed by rest. “Whatcha doing there?”

The doctor didn’t acknowledge her. He simply stared down at the chart attached to the foot of her bed before looking up at the girl. “Yes?” He finally spoke up, as if Cal had annoyed him just with her presence. It wasn’t her fault that she had to stay in this room. Let alone with this person that called himself a doctor. “Charelle, is there something wrong? Do you need assistance?” His voice didn’t sound the least bit helpful; as if he was just going through the motions.

She cringed at the use of her first name. “No, I’m alright.” Lie, her side was burning and her headache was still ringing clear in her head. “And please, call me Cal.” She forced a smile to the doctor’s advance. He didn’t seem to notice, going right up to check her vitals and the monitors.

“We’ll have to up the medication. You’re in pain, aren‘t you?” His question was dead on and his eyes looked as if they could stare into her very soul. All she could do was nod in the hold he had over her. The doctor just sighed, writing things down on the clipboard that had been on the end of her bed. “Um…” She hoped to rouse the doctor from his work.

“What is it Charelle?” He seemed to stress her name in an overly sweet way. Cal put up a brave front and ignored him. “How are my injuries?" She appeared hopeful. “You will live.” The doctor replied flatly. Of course she knew that. “What I mean doctor is my eye. What’s wrong with it?” With that, he voice cracked uneasily. She touched the gauze covering her eye gently, looking to the doctor for help.

“Oh right. That.” He said it as if her eyesight wasn’t important. “You will have some vision problems. It could be anywhere from total blindness in that eye or clear as you used to see. And anywhere in between. It’ll just be a while before we know.” The doctor shrugged and continued with his chores.

Cal couldn’t say anything more. She was stuck staring…. Staring into nothing, thinking about…. Nothing. She didn’t even realize the crude doctor had left. Her body felt numb, the painkillers must have been kicking in. Before she realized it, she was out. Back into darkness. Into despair.

(Sometime after Cal's injury)

“Daddy!” Cal peeked through the cracked door. “Daddy, Mrs. Cross helped me make dinner!” She paused, a tentative smile on her face. “She said it was really good, do you want some?” She pushed open the door slightly to stare into the darkened room. “Dad?” There came a stir from the opposite end of the room. “I made food…” Cal hadn’t been in that room in weeks. Their room. Mommy and Daddy’s room, but it was just Daddy’s now. A gleam of light caught Cal’s attention, the reflection on her father’s glasses was visible. She promptly made her way to him, through the mounds of dirty clothes and turned over furniture.

Her dad’s form was a huddled mass on the bed, far too big for him to sleep in alone. He didn’t acknowledge her as she approached, his face covered in the darkness of the room. With a small click, a wash of pale light filled their immediate area. It took her dad a second to realize what was happening. He laid his eyes upon her, though he did look mildly dazed, “Daddy I brought fo-…” He reached up to her, causing her to flinch away from him and drop the plate. Her father was unfazed, he extended his reach to caress her cheek. “I-I’m so glad you came back. I missed you dear.” Cal stared in shock, letting what had happened settle in before she placed her hand on his. Tears welled up as she stared into his desperate eyes. She hesitated slightly before trying to bring him back to reality. “It’s me Daddy!” A smile on her face. He actually looked happy, but the thrill was gone…. He snatched his hand away and stared at her, like he had seen a ghost.

He sighed, frustrated and weary, “Charelle…..” His eyes filled with hate as his face flushed. “I told you to never set foot in this room.” He breathed out in a growl. “But daddy I-I-I” She tried to remember the reason why she had come. “I was just bringing you something to eat!” She looked around to find the meal on the floor. Her father looked her over with a scrutinizing glare, “Get that off my floor. You can't do anything right.” She raised her voice to protest, but he raised his hand to quell her. Cal flinched and ducked down, but her father’s hand didn’t hit her, he grabbed a fist full of her hair as she struggled and cried. “Get out of my room.” His eyes were cold as he pushed her back.

Cal ran out the room, stumbling and tripping in the dark. Her father paid no mind to the sobbing girl, rolling over to shut out her cries. Cal bolted from the house, in her robe and slippers, not really caring what she wore, just trying to get away. It was far too cold for her to be out there. “I’ll just run away like mom.” She fought through the frigid wind, “I’ll just run away….” the adrenalin settled in her system just allowing her to feel the stinging cold. She pulled at her damp robe trying to shield herself from the wind. She stood, defiant, yet tears blurring her vision on top of the white wilderness. She turned to look back from where she had ventured, but there was nothing but snow. She fell to her knees, hands balled to her face bellowing a scream of mixed emotions. “Mommy…. C-come back.” She looked to the snow for answers. “Come back.” Her words were swallowed up in the storm. She got to her feel out of cold despair, willing her body to move. She toppled over, face first in the snow. She curled up and sobbed. She cried into the unforgiving cold.

“Mom!!” Cal woke with a start, sweat dripping from her face. She threw off the covers in a failed attempted to search the fleeting dream for her mother; and gain the love of her father. She fell to the floor with a thud, staying there for a few moments, catching her breath in shallow gasps. That dream… That nightmare had been plaguing her for days. It had become more intense. It felt so real… Like it had happened. She bit her lip, rubbing her blind eye slowly. She was tired of the constant reminder of the past. It was worse than any of her injuries. But enough was enough, she had to do something to rid her of these dreams.

-----------

Hurried knocks filled the quiet hallways. Cal hushed them the best she could. “Aila?” Her voice was raspy and the faintest sound of desperation filled it. She paused, waiting for a response, but the few second wait was too long of a wait for her. She knocked again, harder this time. It took the girl on the other side of the door to answer, the wee hours of the morning left her tired. The door was cracked, allowing the dim hallway light to fall upon Aila’s face. She looked out of it, in a half sleep state. Cal didn’t care, she felt that her matters were more pressing. “Aila,” her hushed whisper welling up tears in her eyes, “I-I need Revenant.”

Cal’s question was answered by a strange look, but Aila didn’t seem to understand. All Cal needed was some confirmation, a yes or a nod? Something? Cal clasped her hands together, begging her to agree. “Please?” She uttered a small whine.

Aila didn’t know what to think of this. She probably thought it was a dream or some hallucination. With a sleepy glance, she nodded, giving the okay to Cal.

Cal was more than ecstatic. She thanked the tired girl and headed down to the labs to commence her plan.

-------------

Days later when Cal had mustered up her courage to venture out again, she left an egg at the young girl’s door with a simple message from its sender. “Thank you, Aila.” She didn’t know if she truly remembered what she had agreed to, but the deed was done and Cal was left with three eggs. Two to give away and one to hold onto to keep the nightmares away.
